A Mediating Effect of Peer Relations on the Association between Parental Achievement-Oriented Expectation and Depression among High School Students (부모의 성취지향적 기대와 고등학생의 우울 간 관계에서 교우 관계의 매개효과)

  • This study examined the effect of parental achievement-oriented expectation on high school students' depression and verified the mediating effect of peer relations on relations. Data were derived from the 7th wave (2016) of Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS), and 1,979 high school students were included. Descriptive statistics analysis, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and a Sobel test were conducted using STATA. The main results were as follows. First, male adolescents perceived higher parental achievement-oriented expectation, lower peer relations, but lower depression than female adolescents. Second, parental achievement-oriented expectation was negatively related to adolescent peer relations but positively related to adolescent depression. This implies that adolescents whose parents have a higher level of achievement-oriented expectation have lower level of peer relations and higher level of depression. Third, adolescents' peer relations significantly mediated the relation between parental achievement-oriented expectation and high school students' depression. The result of Sobel test supported the significance of the mediating effect. The results highlighted a negative impact of parental achievement-oriented expectation on adolescents' mental health, and addressed how parental achievement-oriented expectation affects adolescents' depression by showing an important mechanism of peer relations, which was missed in previous research.

A Comparative Study on Academic Achievement Motivation, Parental Expectation, Teacher Expectation, and Self-Efficacy of Korean and Chinese-Korean Adolescents (화교 청소년과 한국 청소년의 학업적 성취동기, 부모 및 교사기대, 자기효능감에 관한 비교 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare Chinese-Korean adolescents' with Korean adolescents's academic achievement motivation, parental expectation, teacher expectation, self-efficacy. The object is 492 students in the middle school 2th and high school 2th grade who are from Chinese-Korean school and Korean school in Seoul and Incheon. The major results of findings were as follows: First, Chinese-Korean adolescents were more high than academic achievement motivation in Korean adolescents. Second, juniors in middle school were more positive than parental expectation in high school. Third, Chinese-Korean adolescents were more positive than teacher expectation in Korean adolescents, and juniors in middle school are more positive than ones in high school. Forth, Chinese-Korean adolescents were more high than self-efficacy in Korean adolescents.

Influence of Parental Reality Show on Both Marriage Expectation and Family Value : Focusing on (육아예능 프로그램 시청과 결혼 기대감, 가족 가치관의 관계 연구 : KBS '슈퍼맨이 돌아왔다'를 중심으로)

  • This study attempts to investigate the influence of the parental reality show viewing on both the marriage expectation and family value. More specifically, this study investigate the effect of the parental reality show() viewing on marriage expectation(romance and partner expectation), fair parental role model value, and parental nursing efficacy. Indeed, the mediation effects of wishful identification were examined. For this purpose, this study surveyed 407 college students from three different areas. The results showed that the viewing had significant influence on both romance and partner expectation directly as well as indirectly through wishful identification. For the family value, the viewing did not directly influenced on the fair parental role model value, however, it had indirect effects through wishful identification. Meanwhile, viewing had only the direct effect on the parental nursing efficacy.

Parent-teacher differences in the perception of parental expectation and satisfaction on the use of child care service (부모들의 보육시설 이용기대와 만족도에 대한 부모-교사간의 지각차이)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine what parents really want to daycare center and how much they are satisfied with the daycare service they use. This study also explored how exactly daycare teachers recognize the parental needs and satisfaction on daycare service. One hundred and seventy one parents who send their child to a daycare center in Seoul, and one hundred and thirty five teachers from the same daycare centers participated in this study. Parents were asked about their needs and expectation on daycare service and the degree of satisfaction on the daycare center (including educational facilities, teacher's role, specific programs, etc.). Teachers provided answers about their understanding on what the parents want and how much parents are satisfied with their daycare center. Results revealed that parents are generally satisfied with the daycare service such as educational programs and educational facilities and teachers' role conducting. However, some parent-teacher differences were found in their perception on the levels and domains of parental expectation and satisfaction with daycare service. The parent-teacher differences would give very practical tips for teachers, who plan and conduct everyday daycare programs and actually interact with children in the setting for better daycare service.

A Study on Fair Parental Role Model of Dual Earner Couples, their Expectation for Parental Nursing Capability and Real Nursing Practices (맞벌이 부부의 부모역할 공평성 가치관 및 아버지의 양육수행유능감과 양육수행)

  • This study aims to explore the variable factors by which fathers affect nursing practices. for this study 544 married couples were interviewed, which resulted in the following conclusions. First, wives have higher fairness than husbands in sharing their parental roles. Second, in some couples, there was a difference seen in the expectations of each parents nursing capability, but rarely were differences in real nursing practices actually observed. Third, all couples interviewed showed some disparity between their expectations of parental nursing capability and their real nursing practices, where the expectations for nursing capability were higher than the real nursing practices. Fourth, higher expectations for nursing capabilities from fathers result in them having better parental roles. Fifth, there is no correlation between parental nursing practices and social demographic variables. Lastly, the impacts on the parental nursing practices are ranked by relative importance as parental nursing capability, the wife's expectation for parental nursing capability and so on.

The Relationship among Parenting Behaviors, Children's Perfectionism and Achievement Motivation (부모의 양육행동, 남녀 아동의 완벽주의 및 성취동기간의 관계)

  • This study examined the relationship among parenting behaviors, children's perfectionism and achievement motivation, using a sample of 338 fifth and sixth graders. The participants completed questionnaires on parenting behaviors and their perfectionism and achievement motivation. Data were analyzed by factor analyses and multiple regression analysis. Both boys and girls had higher achievement motivation when they perceived higher parental levels of acceptance, and girls showed higher achievement motivation when they perceived higher maternal control/over-expectation. Boys who exhibited self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism and girls who exhibited self-oriented perfectionism showed higher achievement motivation. Boys had higher self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism when perceiving higher parental acceptance and control/over-expectation. Girls showed higher self-oriented perfectionism when perceiving higher parental acceptance and control/over-expectation, and they showed higher socially prescribed perfectionism when perceiving higher paternal control/over-expectation and maternal acceptance and control/over-expectation. It was revealed that both boys' and girls' perfectionism tended to play mediating roles between parenting behaviors and achievement motivation.

Influence of Parental Attachment on Learning Flow: Mediating Effects of Parental Academic Expectation and Optimism in Adolescents (청소년들의 부모애착이 학습몰입에 미치는 영향: 부모의 학업기대와 낙관성의 매개효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the mediating effects of parental academic expectations and adolescent's optimism in the influence of perceived parental attachment on learning flow. The subjects of this study were 184 middle and high school students in Seoul. The results of this study are as follows. First, academic expectation and optimism showed significant full mediation effects on the relationship between parent attachment and learning flow. Second, there was no statistically significant difference in the difference between the indirect effects of academic expectation and optimism by the bootstrapping method. Based on the results of this study, it was found that the healthy attachment relationship with the parents increases the parent's supportive expectancy, improves the optimism for the youth, and improves the learning commitment for effective learning. Finally, we discussed the role and expectations of parents and adolescents in promoting the learning commitment of adolescents.

Differences Between Parental Perceptions and Practices of Parental Role Responsibilities for Children Enrolled in Preschools (어린이집 이용 부모의 역할 책임에 대한 부모의 인식과 실행 차이)

  • Objective: This study aims to examine the level of parental perceptions and practices on parental role responsibilities for children enrolled in preschools and to verify the differences. Methods: A total of 301 parents whose children were attending preschools participated in this study. The collected data were analyzed for frequency, factor analysis, and reliability. In addition, the t-test and the Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) were performed. Results: First, there are relatively high levels of perception and practices of parental role responsibilities. Second, parental perception of parental role responsibilities is higher than the level of actual performance. Third, although parents were highly aware of their role responsibilities, there is a great expectation of the role of preschools for the development of the social competence of children. Fourth, parents value the level of practice of role responsibilities in preschools relatively high. Conclusion/Implications: Support systems are needed to reduce the gap between parental perception and practice of their role responsibilities for children enrolled in preschools.

Sex Differences in Children's Anticipation of the Consequences of Aggression (아동의 공격행동에 따른 결과예상에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate sex differences in outcome expectation for aggression, and to study the effects of sex of target child and degree of provocation on the consequences that a child anticipates for aggression. The subjects were 30 boys and 30 girls in the 6th grade of a public elementary school located in Seoul. The children were tested individually by an adult who read the items to the child. Perry, Perry, and Weiss's Outcome Expectation Questionnaire, The modified consisting of 48 items was used in this study. The data were analysed by analyses of variance with repeated measures and t-test. Boys expected less guilt and negative self-reactions for aggression than girls. When provoked, children expected more tangible reward and less parental disapproval than when not provoked. When aggressing toward boys, children expected more tangible rewards, less parental disapproval, and less peer disapproval than when aggressing toward girls.

A Study of Perception of the Newborn, Parental Role Stress and Anxiety of Preterm Birth Mothers (조기출산 어머니의 신생아에 대한 지각, 부모역할 스트레스 및 불안)

  • The purpose of this study was to contribute to maternal nursing in the early postpartum stage and neonate nursing. Data were collected through self-report questionaires which were constructed to include perception of the newborn scale, parental role stress scale and anxiety scale. The subjects consisted of 81 mothers of preterm babies at seven hospitals in Seoul and Kyoungki-Do, from July 15 to September 30, 2000. Data were analysed by SPSS/PC using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, ANOVA, t-test and Pearson correlation coefficient. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. The mean of perception of the newborn in the early postpartum stage was 1.35. The mean of parental role stress was 10.78. The mean of anxiety of mother was 39.74. 2. There were significant positive correlation between parental role stress and anxiety of mothers. 3. There were not significant influencing general characteristics to perception of the newborn and parental role stress. General characteristics related to the level of anxiety were economic status, expectation of pregnancy, birthing order, newborn weight. The above findings indicated that the level of parental role stress and anxiety of preterm birth mothers were correlated. Therefore nursing intervention for reducing parental role stress and anxiety should be provided for preterm birth mothers.
