The purpose of this study was to assess and compare discrepancy in the scores of uncertainty perceived by patients and nurses' interperson perception. For this study, 124 hospitalized patients and the same numbered nurses assigned for direct care of each 124 patients were selected from general ward of C. University Hospital in Seoul during the time period from September to November 1987. Degree of uncertainty was measured by 27 items modified from Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale (MUIS), and was utilized by a Likert type scale The data were analysed by Mcnemar-test. Unpaired t-test. ANOVA, Scheffe - test and Stepwise multiple regression. The results are summarized as follows : 1. The discrepancy in the scores of uncertainty perceived by patients and nurses' interperson perception showed significant differences in 23 of 27 items : 11 of 23 items showed that the scores of patients' perception of uncertainty were higher than that of nurses' interperson perception of uncertainty. but 12 of 23 items were revealed reversely. 2. With regard to nurse's demographic variables, the discrepancy scores were the higest in the group under 22 years of age (F=3.20, p=.026) and in the group less than 1 year of nursing experience among 4 groups (F=4.41, p=.006). 3. The discrepancy scores had a tendency to be lowered in the higher age group(r= -.27. p=.0026) and in the longer experienced group (r=-.25, p=.0052). 4. The most important variable affecting the discrepancy scores was identified to be the nurses' age which acounted for 7.2% fo the total variances in the stepwise multiple regression analysis. This was followed by patient hospital days which accounted for an additional 4.5% of the total variances. To conclude, the discrepancy in the scores of uncertainty perceived by patients and nurses' interperson perception showed significant differences in 23 of 27 items. The discrepancy scores of uncertainty had a tendancy to be lowered in the higher age group and in the longer experienced group.
Purpose: Purposes of this study were to promote understanding on mutually informed consent by comparing and analyzing the perception and experience of informed consent among physicians, nurses, and patients. Method: Participants in the study were 145 physicians, 300 nurses, and 178 patients from eight hospitals in Busan. To examine their understanding and experience with informed consent, all participants responded to a questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS/PC 12.0 program. Results: On the necessity of informed consent, the affirmative percentages were 95.9% for physicians, 99.0% for nurses and 84.8% for patients. As to the most important reason for informed consent 47.6% of the physicians and 64.3% of the nurses answered 'because it is an occupational and ethical duty', while 46.6% of the patients answered 'because it is protection for physicians'. Regarding the legal decision maker for informed consent, 33.1% of the physicians, 27% of the nurses, and 42.1% of the patients answered that the legal decision-making right belonged to the 'patient'. The agreement rate on the necessity of providing a comprehensive explanation about informed consent was 89.0% for physicians, 98.3% for nurses, and 96.1% for patients. Conclusion: Most physicians, nurses, and even patients have inaccurate perceptions and inappropriate experience with informed consent.
Purpose: The objectives of this study were to investigate perception of touch therapies among nurses who looking after cancer patients, ultimately to probe possibility of utilization of touch therapies as nursing interventions. Method: A descriptive study conducted from Dec. 2005 to Jan. 2006. 270 nurses taking care of cancer patients in 2 urban hospital were completed self-report questionnaire about general characteristics, utilization of touch therapies, willingness to adopt touch therapies in their practice, and perception of safety and effectiveness of touch therapies. Result: The participants were average 27.97 year-old, 60% of them had bachelor's degree, most of them were staff nurses(83.0%), and 34.6% of them were 3-5 years experienced in oncology nursing. Among 5 touch therapies(therapeutic touch, massage, reflexology, acupressure, and acupuncture), massage was the most positively perceived therapy not only the aspects of safety(67.1%) and effectiveness(65.9%), but also willingness to utilize in their practice(71.2%). There was no significant difference in willingness to utilize in their practice per age and years of working in oncology nursing. Older and more experienced groups perceived more positively to massage and reflexology. Conclusion: Massage might be readily adopted as a nursing intervention in oncology nursing practice. Strategies to encourage the utilization of touch therapies as nursing intervention should be established.

Purpose: This descriptive study aimed to explore the performance, nurses' perception, and influencing contexts of intentional rounding (IR), and to identify the factors influencing the performance of IR. Methods: 498 questionnaire responses were collected from clinical nurses with more than six months of work experiences in general wards performing IR in a general hospital. Results: The mean scores of the performance, nurses' perception, and influencing contexts of IR were 3.81(±0.68), 3.46(±0.42), and 3.79(±0.51) out of 5.00, respectively. There were significant differences in performance (F=20.51, p<.001) and nurses' perception (F=4.96, p=.001) based on the work department. There were significant differences in the influencing contexts based on age (F=6.02, p=.003) and the length of clinical experience in the ward (F=3.36, p=.010). Performance and nurses' perception(r=.42, p<.001), performance and influencing contexts (r=.46, p<.001), and nurses' perception and influencing contexts (r=.58, p<.001) showed a statistically positive correlation. Work unit (F=10.45, p<.001), nurses' perception of the benefits to patients (F=-2.46, p=.014) and to nurses (F=4.34, p<.001), and influencing contexts at the individual (F=7.77, p<.001) and department levels (F=2.99, p=.003) were found to be significant factors on the performance of IR. Conclusion: It is necessary to support the education programs and active participation of nurses in their role as leaders to raise their awareness regarding the benefits of IR. Furthermore, there is a need to adapt the IR protocol according to the unique characteristics of each unit and evaluate the effectiveness.

This study was conducted to identify pain intensity and factors affecting pain intensity in patients with advanced cancer. Data were collected between June 1 and September 30, 2016 using a questionnaire. The sample size was 221 patients with advanced cancer who were admitted to the oncology department or who visited the outpatient of the general hospital. Data were evaluated by descriptive and Pearson's correlation analyses, one way ANOVA, t-tests and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The mean scores of pain intensity of cancer patients were 4.23 (${\pm}1.68$) based on the average daily pain intensity. Factors influencing pain intensity were illness perception (${\beta}=.27$, p<.001), pain opioid analgesics beliefs (${\beta}=.24$, p<.001), education (middle school, ${\beta}=.24$, p=.001), economic status (${\geq_-}400$, ${\beta}=.20$, p=.001), gender (female, ${\beta}=.14$, p=.017), pain management education (${\beta}=-.14$ p=.020) and diagnosis (Pancreatic Ca, ${\beta}=.14$, p=.020). It explained 28%. Overall, the results of this study revealed that illness perception and pain opioid analgesics beliefs were important factors influencing pain intensity, but that the most important influencing factor was illness perception. Accordingly, it is necessary to develop pain management strategies that include not only pain management knowledge and pain opioid analgesics beliefs, but also illness perception.

Objectives: Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may have deficits in time perception, as assessed by the time estimation task and the time reproduction task, however its age-related trajectory is not yet determined. Therefore we examined the correlation between accuracy of time perception tasks and age, and the association between accuracy of estimation tasks and reproduction tasks. Methods: Sixty-three patients with ADHD, aged 8 to 18 years tested the tasks for five time durations (2, 4, 12, 45, and 60 seconds). Accuracy of tasks was assumed differences (absolute values) between raw results of tasks and original time durations. Spearman's correlation analysis was performed to determine correlation between accuracy of time perception tasks and age. Multivariate regression was used to determine the association of accuracy of estimation tasks with accuracy of reproduction tasks. Results: Age showed correlation with accuracy of estimation tasks, but not with that of reproduction tasks. We observed that the higher the accuracy in 12, 45, and 60 seconds duration time reproduction, the higher the accuracy in longer seconds duration time estimation. Conclusion: Age was correlated with time estimation accuracy whereas there was no impact on time reproduction accuracy. Association of each of the two time perception tasks, particularly in longer time duration, suggested specific impairments in time perception.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of pressure sense perception training (PSPT) on various surfaces on the somatosensory system, balance, and walking ability in chronic stroke patients. METHODS: Thirty patients with stroke participated in this study and were randomly assigned to one of three groups; group 1 received the general physical therapy and the PSPT on a stable surface, group 2 received the general physical therapy and the PSPT on an unstable surface, and group 3 received the general physical therapy alone. Participants in group 1 and group 2 underwent 30 min/session, 3 days per week, for 4 weeks. Pressure error (PE) was used to evaluate changes of proprioception. The Balancia, Functional reach test (FRT), and Timed Up and Go (TUG) were used to assess the balance ability, and the 10m Walking Test (10-MWT) was used to assess walking ability. RESULTS: Experimental groups (group 1 and group 2) showed significant differences in PE, FRT, TUG, and 10-MWT compared to the control group (p <0.05). Group 2 (PSPT on an unstable surface) was significantly different in PE, FRT, and 10-MWT from group 1 (p <0.05). No significant differences were observed for other measures. CONCLUSION: Pressure sense perception training on an unstable surface might be a significantly more effective method for improving somatosensory function, balance, and walking ability, than PSPT on a stable surface.

This study was to evaluate of the reliability and validity of the Risk Perception Survey - Diabetes Mellitus (RPS-DM) with Korean diabetes patients. A total of 183 patients participated in this study from December 4, 2014 to January 1, 2015 with self-reported questionnaires. The data was analyzed using exploratory factor analysis, cronbach's alpha, and item to total correlation. The factor structure of the instrument showed the cumulative variance of 45.1% in the factor analysis and a four-factor structure was found to be appropriate. The comparative site risk score matched with the RPS-DM in English except item 7, 8, and 12. The RPS-DM in Korean version has been found to be reliable and valid.
Purpose: Oral and facial sensation is affected by various factors, including trauma and disease. This study assessed the clinical profile of patients diagnosed with sensory dysfunction and investigated their sensory perception using simple qualitative sensory tests. Methods: Based on a retrospective review of the medical records, we analyzed a total of 68 trigeminal nerve branches associated with sensory dysfunction in 52 subjects. We analyzed the frequency and etiology of sensory dysfunction, and the frequency of different types of sensory perception in response to qualitative sensory testing using tactile and pin-prick stimuli. Results: The inferior alveolar nerve branch was the most frequently involved in sensory dysfunction (88.5%). Third molar extraction (36.5%) and implant surgery (36.5%) were the most frequent etiological factors associated with sensory dysfunction. Hypoesthesia was the most frequent sensory response to tactile stimuli (60.3%). Pin-prick stimuli elicited hyperalgesia, hypoalgesia, and analgesia in 32.4%, 27.9%, and 36.8%, respectively. A significant association was found between the two kinds of stimuli (p=0.260). Conclusions: Sensory dysfunction frequently occurs in the branches of the trigeminal nerve, including the inferior alveolar nerve, mainly due to trauma associated with dental treatment. Simple qualitative sensory testing can be conveniently used to screen sensory dysfunction in patients with altered sensation involving oral and facial regions.
