  • This experiment was to investigate the surface coverage, sward height and dry matter yield of 63 perennial ryegrass cultivars with control cultivar, orchardgrass(Potomac) at different cutting dates(May 25, July 5, August 20 and October 5), in order to select the adaptable cultivars of perennial ryegrass in the middle region of Korea. Four perennial ryegrass cultivars, E.V. Meadea, Aberystwyth S101, Raidor and Real, didn't survive afler sowing. Surface coverage of perennial ryegrass cultivars cut in August 20 was lower than others. Sward height of perennial ryegrass cultivars at each cutting dates was lower than that of orchardgrass. There were no significant differences in sward heights of each cutting date. Dry matter yield of perennial ryegrass cultivars cut in August 20 was lower than others. Total dry matter yield of Oakpark 6% Viktoria, Petra, G. Manawa, and Kangaroo Valley was fell in the range of 11.76 and 10.37t/ha while that of orchardgrass was 12.09t/ha. On the basis of total annual dry matter yield, the adaptability of perennial ryegrass cultivars was classfied as following.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the vegetative growth of two cool season turfgrasses during summer season in Korea. Ten respective cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass [Poapratensis L.] and perennial ryegrass [Lolium perenne L.] were exposed to unshaded, 30% and 60% shade for 4odays. First mowing height was 7cm, and then clippings were harvested every ten days at the same height. Shading increased the total length of clippings of all cultivars of two turfgrasses, but fresh and dry weight were significantly decreased. The highest shoot length obtained at 30% shade in Kentucky bluegrass and at 60% shade in perennial ryegrass. 'Rugky', 'Sydsport', 'Wabash' and 'Baron' of Kentucky bluegrass and 'Repel', 'Omega II', 'Ovation', 'Linn', 'Bell' and 'Manhattan' of perennial ryegrass showed relatively high tolerance to shade. Especially, in 'Citation II' perennial ryegrass, fresh and dry weight were increased by 30% shade. The number of tillers generally decreased with increasing shade. In 30% shade, 'Midnight' Kentucky bluegrass and 'Omega II' perennial ryegrass were least reduced and 'Baron' Kentucky bluegrass and 'Pennant' perennial ryegrass were most reduced. The cultivars of lower growth habit in full sunlight showed shade tolerance compared to those of higher growth habit.

  • This experiment was carried out to determine the effect of improvement of oversown pastures, treated with four nitrogen(N) application levels(0, 100, 200, 300 kg/ha) and three species mixtures (A: orchardgrass+ladino clover; B: orchardgrass+ladino clover+perennial ryegrass; C: orchardgrass+ladino clover+perennial ryegrass+Italian ryegrass). The establishment of perennial ryegrass, Italian ryegrass, and ladino clover were increased with increased N applications, but the ryegrass mixed with orchardgrass and ladino clover decreased the establishment of ladino clover. With the increase of N application levels, orchardgrass, perennial ryegrass and Italian ryegrass in comparison on botanical composition were getting better, while the native plants established already were decreased. The botanical composition of newly sown pasture plants was increased as cutting times progressed. The dry matter(DM) yield of pasture species increased significantly with N application up to 300 kg/ha. There was no significance among mixture treatments, although the DM yield of basic treatment(orchardgrass+ladino clover) was higher than other treatments. However, when compared DM yields on each cutting times, newly oversown pastures in A treatment was shown to be significantly higher only on 2nd cutting time than other treatments(P<0.05). The DM yield of native plants survived in basic species mixture was significantly less than those of other mixtures(P<0.05). Results of this study indicate that for improving oversown pastures, at least 300 kg/ha N application should be applied, and basic mixture (orchardgrass+ladino clover) has more advantage than treatments mixed with ryegrass.

  • The objectives of this research were to investigate the effect of serpentine as a new soil conditioner for growth of turfgrass. To achieve the goal, pure sand or mixtures of sand and serpentine with various ratios were tested for soil physical properties and the growth effects of perennial ryegrass and zoysiagrass growth were compared. Major results of this research are summarized as follows; 1) Hydraulic conductivity of 10~30% serpentine mixtures were observed within the range of 1010~901mm/h which is good for USGA recommendation. Experimental results of pH and EC for various mixtures indicated that the 10% serpentine mixture was the most suitable for turfgrass growth. 2) Perennial ryegass treated with 10% serpentine mixture showed the highest visual quality(p<0.01) among all treatments. And serpentine treatment was more effective to improve visual quality of perennial ryegrass than that of zoysiagrass. The treatment of 10% serpentine had better visual qualities than that of 20% in both of zoysiagrass and perennial ryegrass. Treatment with the right amount of serpentine extends green period for one to two weeks during early winter in both zoysiagrass and perennial ryegrass. 3) In perennial ryegrass, the treatment of 10% serpentine resulted in an increase of total dry weight compare with those of zeolite or barley stone, and also dramatically promoted the dry weight by 15% compared with sand 100%(control). Total dry weight of zoysiagrass treated with 10% serpentine was 9% higher than that of san. These results indicated that serpentine can be a good soil conditioner for both zoysiagrass and perennial ryegrass when it is blended with sand within a range of 10 to 20% by volume.

  • In this study, we analyzed the relationships between weather factors and photosystem II activity (Fv/Fm), as a measure of photochemical efficiency, in three cool-season turfgrasses commonly planted on golf courses in Jeju, South Korea: perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), and creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.). In all three turfgrasses, Fv/Fm was higher during late summer than during early summer. However, in late summer, Fv/Fm was significantly lower in perennial ryegrass than in the other two species. In early summer, Fv/Fm in perennial ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass was positively correlated with mean low temperature and extreme minimum temperature, whereas, in late summer, this parameter in Kentucky bluegrass and creeping bentgrass was positively correlated with relative humidity, and in creeping bentgrass was negatively correlated with mean high temperature, mean low temperature, and extreme maximum temperature. These results indicate that raising low temperatures is favorable for perennial ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass in early summer, whereas, in late summer, the lowering of high temperatures proves to be beneficial for creeping bentgrass, and raising relative humidity is conducive to the growth of Kentucky bluegrass and creeping bentgrass. These findings will contribute to improving the selection and management of turfgrasses on golf courses and sports fields.

  • The influence of calcium on the growth of creeping bentgrass 'Penn-Al', perennial ryegrass 'Palmer II', Kentuckuy bluegrass 'Nassou' and tall fescue 'Boonsai 2000' in greenhouse was investigated. Creeping bentgrass 'Penn-A1', Kentucky bluegrass 'Nassou' and tall fescue 'Boonsai 2000' at Ca 4.0 me/L, and perennial ryegrass 'Palmer II' at Ca 2.0 me/L showed the best shoot growth. Creeping bentgrass 'Penn-A1', perennial ryegrass 'Palmer II' and Kentucky bluegrass 'Nassou' at Ca 1.0 me/L, and tall fescue 'Boonsai 2000' at Ca 4.0 me/L showed the best root growth, and there was little or no difference between different Ca concentrations. Creeping bentgrass 'Penn-Al' and Kentucky bluegrass 'Nassou' at Ca 4.0 mea, and perennial ryegrass 'Palmer II' at Ca 1.0 me/L had the highest number of tillers, and tall fescue 'Boonsai 2000' at Ca 4.0 me/L had the highest, but there was no difference between different Ca concentrations. As application rate of Ca concentration became higher, the concent of Ca in plant tissue increased, while the content of Mg in plant tissue decreased, and the content of Fe in plant tissue increased to Ca 4.0 me/L. The Ca treatment had not effect on N, p, K, and Zn of tissue content. The wick pot applied will be to research of plant nutrition in future because utilization of wick pot has an excellent precision and convenience.
