A new method that improves the performance of large scale voice dialling system is presented using speaker adaptation. Since SI (Speaker Independent) based speech recognition system with phoneme HMM uses only the phoneme string of the input sentence, the storage space could be reduced greatly. However, the performance of the system is worse than that of the speaker dependent system due to the mismatch between the input utterance and the SI models. A new method that estimates the phonetic string and adaptation vectors iteratively is presented to reduce the mismatch between the training utterances and a set of SI models using speaker adaptation techniques. For speaker adaptation the stochastic matching methods are used to estimate the adaptation vectors. The experiments performed over actual telephone line shows that proposed method shows better performance as compared to the conventional method. with the SI phonetic recognizer.

In this paper, we propose a connected Korean digit recohnition system employing neural networks and lexical constraints of the Korean digits. In the proposed recognition system, firstly, each frame of digit string is labelled by phoneme classification neural networks.which are trained with the reference phoneme segments extracted form an isolated digit based on the position information. And, the frame labels are combined with each other for constructing the phoneme segments. Then, these segments are combined to form a digit candidate using the digit combination rules. The digit candidate is decided based on the condition for digit decision. If the condition is not satisfied, the digit candidate is further recognized using the digit decision neural network in the next step. In our approach, the neural networks are trained with 10 isolated digits uttered by 5 male speakers. To investigate the performance of the proposed recognition system, an intensive computer simulation on the 30 connected digit strings uttered by 5 male speakers is performed. The simulation result indicates that 95.6% digit recognition rate and 82% digit string recognition rate are provided by the proposed Korean digit recognition system.
The accuracy rate of P2G (Phoneme-to-Grapheme) is one of the important factors determining the quality of unlimited voice recognition (VR) systems. Few studies were, however, conducted to reduce ambiguities of a phoneme string which can be segmented into a variety of different linguistic units (i.e. morphemes, words, eo-jeols), thus be transformed into more than one grapheme string. This paper is a preliminary research for building a large knowledge base of those homonymic & heterographic units(HHUs), which will provide unlimited Korean VR systems with more accurate P2G information. This paper analyzes 2 main factors generating HHUs: (1) boundary determination of the prosodic unit; (2) its segmentation into linguistic units. In this paper, linguistic characteristics determining variable boundaries of a prosodic unit are investigated, and the ambiguity types of HHUs are classified in accordance with their morphological and syntactic structures as well as with the phonological rules governing them.
First phoneme queries are important functionalities that provide an improvement in the usability of interfaces that produce errors frequently due to their restricted input environment, such as in navigators and mobile devices. In this paper, we propose a time-space efficient data structure for Korean first phoneme queries that disassembles Korean strings in a phoneme-wise manner, rearranges them into circular strings, and finally, indexes them using the extended Burrows-Wheeler Transform. We also demonstrate that our proposed method can process more types of query using less space than previous methods. We also show it can improve the search time when the query length is shorter and the proportion of first phonemes is higher.

In continuous speech recognition system, it is possible to implement the system which can handle unlimited number of words by using limited number of phonetic units such as phonemes. Dividing continuous speech into the string of tems of phonemes prior to recognition process can lower the complexity of the system. But because of the coarticulations between neiboring phonemes, it is very difficult ot extract exactly their boundaries. In this paper, we propose the algorithm ot extract short terms which can represent each phonemes instead of extracting their boundaries. The short terms of lower spectral change and higher spectral chang eare detcted. Then phoneme changes are detected using distance measure with this lower spectral change terms, and hgher spectral change terms are regarded as transition terms or short phoneme terms. Finally lower spectral change terms and the mid-term of higher spectral change terms are regarded s the represent each phonemes. The cepstral coefficients and weighted cepstral distance are used for speech feature and measuring the distance because of less computational complexity, and the speech data used in this experimetn was recoreded at silent and ordinary in-dorr environment. Through the experimental results, the proposed algorithm showed higher performance with less computational complexity comparing with the conventional segmetnation algorithms and it can be applied usefully in phoneme-based continuous speech recognition.
In this paper, we propose a modified unsupervised linear alignment algorithm for building an aligned corpus. The original algorithm inserts null characters into both of two aligned strings (source string and target string), because the two strings are different from each other in length. This can cause some difficulties like the search space explosion for applications using the aligned corpus with null characters and no possibility of applying to several machine learning algorithms. To alleviate these difficulties, we modify the algorithm not to contain null characters in the aligned source strings. We have shown the usability of our approach by applying it to different areas such as Korean-English back-trans literation, English grapheme-phoneme conversion, and Korean morphological analysis.
The edit distance problem is finding the minimum number of edit operations to transform a string into another one. It is one of the important problems in algorithm research and there are some algorithms that compute an optimal edit distance for the one-dimensional languages such as the English alphabet. However, there are a few researches to find the edit distance for the more complicated language such as the Korean or Chinese alphabet. In this paper, we define the measure of the edit distance for the Korean alphabet with the phoneme classification system to improve the previous edit distance algorithm and present an algorithm for the edit distance problem for the Korean alphabet.

Various phonological alteration occurs when we pronounce continuously in korean. This phonological alteration is one of the major reasons which make the speech recognition of korean difficult. This paper presents a rule-based system which converts a speech recognition character string to a text-based character string. The recovery results are morphologically analyzed and only a correct text string is generated. Recovery is executed according to four kinds of rules, i.e., a syllable boundary final-consonant initial-consonant recovery rule, a vowel-process recovery rule, a last syllable final-consonant recovery rule and a monosyllable process rule. We use a x-clustering information for an efficient recovery and use a postfix-syllable frequency information for restricting recovery candidates to enter morphological analyzer. Because this system is a rule-based system, it doesn't necessitate a large pronouncing dictionary or a phoneme dictionary and the advantage of this system is that we can use the being text based morphological analyzer.
Advancing of mobile device is remarkable, so the research on mobile input device is getting more important issue. There are lots of input devices such as keypad, QWERTY keypad, touch and speech recognizer, but they are not as convenient as typical keyboard-based desktop input devices so input strings usually contain many typing errors. These input errors are not trouble with communication among person, but it has very critical problem with searching in database, such as dictionary and address book, we can not obtain correct results. Especially, Hangeul has more than 10,000 different characters because one Hangeul character is made by combination of consonants and vowels, frequency of error is higher than English. Generally, suffix tree is the most widely used data structure to deal with errors of query, but it is not enough for variety errors. In this paper, we propose fast approximate Korean word searching system, which allows variety typing errors. This system includes several algorithms for applying general approximate string searching to Hangeul. And we present profanity filters by using proposed system. This system filters over than 90% of coined profanities.
In spoken document retrievals (SDR), subword (typically phonemes) indexing term is used to avoid the out-of-vocabulary (OOV) problem. It makes the indexing and retrieval process independent from any vocabulary. It also requires a small corpus to train the acoustic model. However, subword indexing term approach has a major drawback. It shows higher word error rates than the large vocabulary continuous speech recognition (LVCSR) system. In this paper, we propose an probabilistic slot detection and n-gram based string matching method for phone based spoken document retrievals to overcome high error rates of phone recognizer. Experimental results have shown 9.25% relative improvement in the mean average precision (mAP) with 1.7 times speed up in comparison with the baseline system.
