  • This paper introduces a new paradigm of physical layer security through channel coding for wireless networks. The well known spread spectrum based physical layer security in wireless network is applicable when code division multiple access (CDMA) is used as wireless air link interface. In our proposal, we incorporate the proposed security protocol within channel coding as channel coding is an essential part of all kind of wireless communications. Channel coding has a built-in security in the sense of encoding and decoding algorithm. Decoding of a particular codeword is possible only when the encoding procedure is exactly known. This point is the key of our proposed security protocol. The common parameter that required for both encoder and decoder is generally a generator matrix. We proposed a random selection of generators according to a security key to ensure the secrecy of the networks against unauthorized access. Therefore, the conventional channel coding technique is used as a security controller of the network along with its error correcting purpose.

  • To serve the growing demand of the bidirectional information exchange, we propose a single relay selection (RS) scheme for physical-layer network coding (PNC) in a bidirectional cooperative network consisting of two sources and multiple relays. This RS scheme selects a single best relay by maximizing the bottleneck of the capacity region of both information flows in the bidirectional network. We show that the proposed RS rule minimizes the outage probability and that it can be used as a performance benchmark for any RS rules with PNC. We derive a closed-form exact expression of the outage probability for the proposed RS rule and show that it achieves full diversity gain. Finally, numerical results demonstrate the validity of our analysis.

  • To enhance the symbol error rate (SER) performance of the two-way relay channels with physical layer network coding, this letter proposes a relay selection scheme, in which the relay with the maximal minimum distance between different points in its constellation among all relays is selected to assist two-way transmissions. We give the closed-form expression of minimum distance for binary phase-shift keying and quadrature phase-shift keying. Additionally, we design a low-complexity method for higher-order modulations based on look-up tables. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the SER performance for two-way relay networks.

  • In this paper we introduce a new paradigm of physical layer security for wireless network. Existing security protocols like internet's transport layer security protocol has some security flaws that skilled hackers could exploit. Motivated from this point we introduce a new security protocol that works in physical layer which is much less vulnerable to hackers than any other higher layers. In our proposal, we incorporate the proposed security protocol within channel coding as channel coding is an essential part of wireless communication. We utilize the flexibility to choose a generator matrix (or generator polynomial) of a particular code that selects the code words as a core of our protocol. Each pair of wireless node will select a unique generator using their security key before they started to communicate with each other.

  • Virtualized small cell network is a promising architecture which can realize efficient utilization of the network resource. However, conventional full duplex self-backhauls lead to residual self-interference, which limits the network performance. To handle this issue, this paper proposes a virtual resource allocation, in which the residual self-interference is fully exploited by employing a physical-layer network coding (PNC) aided self-backhaul scheme. We formulate the features of PNC as time slot and information rate constraints, and based on that, the virtual resource allocation is formulated as a mixed combinatorial optimization problem. To solve the problem efficiently, it is decomposed into two sub problems, and a two-phase iteration algorithm is developed accordingly. In the algorithm, the first sub problem is approximated and transferred into a convex problem by utilizing the upper bound of the PNC rate constraint. On the basis of that, the convexity of the second sub problem is also proved. Simulation results show the advantages of the proposed scheme over conventional solution in both the profits of self-backhauls and utility of the network resource.

  • Fieldbus is a low level serial digital network which will be used for factory automation. This paper describes lower layer implementation of a Fieldbus network interface. Physical layer provides hardware interface between IBM-PC and Fieldbus. Also, physical layer uses manchester coding, shielded twisted pair lines and RS-485 electrical standard. Data link layer includes Intel's iDCX96 real time executive for 8797 one chip microcontroller and Fieldbus data link protocol software.

  • In this paper, we investigate power allocation scheme and outage performance for a physical-layer network coding (PNC) relay based secondary user (SU) communication in cognitive multi-antenna relay networks (CMRNs), in which two secondary transceivers exchange their information via a multi-antenna relay using PNC protocol. We propose an optimal energy-efficient power allocation (OE-PA) scheme to minimize total energy consumption per bit under the sum rate constraint and interference power threshold (IPT) constraints. A closed-form solution for optimal allocation of transmit power among the SU nodes, as well as the outage probability of the cognitive relay system, are then derived analytically and confirmed by numerical results. Numerical simulations demonstrate the PNC protocol has superiority in energy efficiency performance over conventional direct transmission protocol and Four-Time-Slot (4TS) Decode-and-Forward (DF) relay protocol, and the proposed system has the optimal outage performance when the relay is located at the center of two secondary transceivers.

  • In this paper, we investigate the effect of multiple antennas at a relay node on the performance of physical-layer network coding (PNC) in the two-way relay channel (TWRC). We assume that two source nodes have a single antenna and the relay node has multiple antennas. We extend the conventional TWRC environment with a signle antenna at both relay and source nodes to the case of multiple antennas at the relay node. In particular, we consider two decoding strategies: separate decoding (SD) and direct decoding (DD). The SD decodes each packet from the two sources and performs the network coding with bit-wise exclusive OR (XOR) operation, while the DD decodes the network-coded packet from the two sources. Note that both decoding strategies are based on log-likelihood ratio (LLR) computation. It is shown that the bit error rate (BER) performance becomes significantly improved as the number of antennas at the relay node.

  • This paper attempts to address the effectiveness of physical-layer network coding (PNC) on the throughput improvement for multi-hop multicast in random wireless ad hoc networks (WAHNs). We prove that the per session throughput order with PNC is tightly bounded as ${\Theta}((n\sqrt{m}R(n))^{-1})$ if $m=(R^{-2}(n))$, where n is the total number of nodes, R(n) is the communication range, and m is the number of destinations for each multicast session. We also show that per-session throughput order with PNC is tight bounded as ${\Theta}(n^{-1})$, when $m={\Omega}(R^{-2}(n))$. The results of this paper imply that PNC cannot improve the throughput order of multicast in random WAHNs, which is different from the intuition that PNC may improve the throughput order as it allows simultaneous signal access and combination.

  • In the conventional PNC scheme, the relay node requires simultaneous transmission of two source nodes with strict power control and carrier-phase matching between two received symbols. However, this pre-equalization process at source nodes is not practical in fading channels. In this letter, we propose a novel physical-layer network coding (PNC) scheme with log-likelihood ratio (LLR) conversion for fading channels, which utilizes not pre-equalizer at transmitters (source nodes) but joint detector at receiver (relay node). The proposed PNC requires only channel side information at the receiver (CSIR), which is far more practical assumption in fading channels. In addition, the proposed PNC scheme can use the conventional modulation scheme like M-QAM regardless of modulation order, while the conventional PNC scheme requires reconfiguration of modulation scheme at the source nodes for detection of the received signal at relay node. We consider the combination of the proposed PNC and channel coding, and find that the proposed PNC scheme is easily combined the linear channel codes such as turbo codes, LDPC, and convolutional codes.
