  • Free Vibration Analysis using Non-dimensional Dynamic Influence Function (NDIF) is extended to arbitrarily shaped plates including polygonal plates. Since the corners of polygonal plates have indefinite normal directions and additional boundary conditions related to a twisting moment at a corner along with moment and shear force zero conditions, it is not easy to apply the NDIF method to polygonal plates wi th the free boundary condition. Moreover, owing to the fact that the local polar coordinate system, which has been introduced for free plates with smoothly varying edges, cannot be employed for the straight edges of the polygonal plates, a new coordinate system is required for the polygonal plates. These problems are solved by developing the new method of modifying a corner into a circular arc and setting the normal direction at the corner to an average value of normal direct ions of two edges adjacent to the corner. Some case studies for plates with various shapes show that the proposed method gives credible natural frequencies and mode shapes for various polygons that agree well with those by an exact method or FEM (ANSYS).

  • It was investigated that two plates of aluminum can be welded by hot extru-shear welding process with extru-shear welding dies, and that the welding strength and metal flow on the welding section were analyzed by computer simulation according to the welding variables such as inclined angle of cutter and overlapped length of plates and temperature of plates. It was known by computer simulation that welding strength on the welding section of plates could be influenced by the inclined angle of cutter and overlapped length of plates and temperature of plates. And it was known by experiments that two plates of aluminum can be welded on the end sections by hot extru-shear welding process using extru-shear welding dies, and that welding strength is the highest when inclined angle of dies is $70^{\circ}$, and overlapped length is 1.2 mm, and temperature is $520^{\circ}$, when aluminum 5052 two plates with 1.6 mm thickness are used as welding material.

  • This paper is dedicated to the buckling behaviors of strengthened perforated plates under edge shear loading, which is a typical load pattern of steel plates in civil engineering, especially in plate and box girders. The square plates considered each has a centric circular hole and is simply supported on four edges in the out-of-plane direction. Three types of strengthening stiffeners named ringed stiffener (RS), flat stiffener (FSA and FSB) and strip stiffener (SSA, SSB and SSC) are mainly discussed. The finite element method (FEM) has been employed to analyse the elastic and elasto-plastic buckling behavior of unstrengthened and strengthened perforated plates. Results show that most of the strengthened perforated plates behave higher buckling strengths than the unstrengthened ones, while the enhancements in elastic buckling stress and elasto-plastic ultimate strength are closely related to stiffener types as well as plate geometric parameters including plate slenderness ratio and hole diameter to plate width ratio. The critical slenderness ratios of shear loaded strengthened perforated plates, which determine the practical buckling pattern (i.e., elastic or elasto-plastic buckling) of the plates, are also studied. Based on the contrastive analyses of strengthening efficiency considering the influence of stiffener consumption, the most efficient cutout-strengthening methods for shear loaded perforated square plates with different slenderness ratios and circular hole diameter to plate width ratios are preliminarily identified.

  • An experimental investigation has been conducted to determine the effectiveness of base shield plates in reducing the drag of a rough circular cylinder in a cross flow at Reynolds numbers in the range $3{\times}10^4{\leq}Re{\leq}10.5{\times}10^4$. Three model configurations were investigated and compared: a plane cylinder (PC), a cylinder with a splitter plate (MC1) and a cylinder fitted with base shield plates (MC2). Each configuration was studied in the sub and supercritical flow regimes. The chord of the plates, L, ranged from 0.22 to 1.50D and the cavity width, G, between the plates was in the range from 0 to 0.93D. It is recognized that base shield plates can be employed more effectively than splitter plates to reduce the aerodynamic drag of circular cylinders in both the sub- and supercritical flow regimes. For subcritical flow regime, one can get 53% and 24% drag reductions for the MC2 and MC1 models with L/D=1.0, respectively, compared with the PC model. For supercritical flow regime however, the corresponding drag reductions are 38% and 7%.

  • In this paper, we study the Carbon/Glass hybrid laminated composite plates, where the buckling behavior is examined using an accurate and simple refined higher order shear deformation theory. This theory takes account the shear effect, where shear deformation and shear stresses will be considered in determination of critical buckling load under different boundary conditions. The most interesting feature of this new kind of hybrid laminated composite plates is that the possibility of varying components percentages, which allows us for a variety of plates with different materials combinations in order to overcome the most difficult obstacles faced in traditional laminated composite plates like (cost and strength). Numerical results of the present study are compared with three-dimensional elasticity solutions and results of the first-order and the other higher-order theories issue from the literature. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and simple in solving the buckling behavior of hybrid laminated composite plates and allows to industrials the possibility to adjust the component of this new kind of plates in the most efficient way (reducing time and cost) according to their specific needs.

  • This paper deals with reliability analysis of specially orthotropic plates subjected to transverse lateral pressure loads by using Monte Carlo simulation method. The plates are simply supported around their all edges and have a low short span to plate depth ratio with rectangular plate shapes. Various levels of reliability analyses of the plates are performed within the context of First-Ply-Failure(FPF) analysis such as ply-/laminate-level reliability analyse, failure tree analysis and sensitivity analysis of basic design variables to estimated plate reliabilities. In performing all these levels of reliability analyses, the followings are considered within the Monte Carlo simulation method: (1) input parameters to the strengths of the plates such as applied transverse lateral pressure loads, elastic moduli, geometric including plate thickness and ultimate strength values of the plates are treated as basic design variables following a normal probability distribution; (2) the mechanical responses of the plates are calculated by using simplified higher-order shear deformation theory which can predict the mechanical responses of thick laminated plates accurately; and (3) the limit state equations are derived from polynomial failure criteria for composite materials such as maximum stress, maximum strain, Tsai-Hill, Tsai-Wu and Hoffman.

  • Stiffened plates are commonly used as a component of ship's structures. Most frequently symmetrically stiffened plates are used, but some of stern structures and any specified parts are often constructed with eccentrically stiffened plates. The problems of these eccentrically stiffened plates have been studied rarely, and the results of eccentricity effect of eccentrically stiffened plates are not available. This paper deals with the analysis of eccentrically stiffened plates in the linear elastic range. The derivation of the stiffness matrix was carried out by finite element method for which the isoparametric element was adopted. To show the effect of eccentricity, the deflection at the center under the uniformly distributed and the concentrated load of simply supported and clamped plate models are computed respectively in accordance with the eccentricity of the stiffener. As shown in the results of computations, the eccentricity effect of concentrated load case is greater than that of distributed load case and that of simply supported boundary condition is greater than that of clamped boundary condition. The higher eccentricity of stiffener is, the smaller the effect of stiffener becomes, therefore scantling of eccentrically stiffened plates should be considerably greater than those of symmetrically stiffened plates.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), plates bonding repair method is one of the simple repair methods for cracked steel structures. In this study, the influence of width of CFRP plates on bending fatigue life of out-of-plane gusset joint strengthened with CFRP plates was investigated from the experimental and numerical point of view. In the bending fatigue test of cracked out-of-plane gusset joint strengthened with CFRP plates, the effect of width of CFRP plates on crack growth life was clarified experimentally. Namely, it was revealed that the crack growth life becomes larger with increasing the width of CFRP plates. In the numerical approach, the stress intensity factor (SIF) at the surface point of a semi-elliptical surface crack was estimated based on the linear fracture mechanics. Furthermore, the extended fatigue life of cracked out-of-plane gusset joint strengthened with CFRP plates was evaluated by using the estimated SIF at the surface point and the empirical formula of the aspect ratio of semi-elliptical crack. As the results of numerical analysis, the estimated fatigue life of the specimen strengthened with CFRP plates showed the good agreement with the test results.

  • The durability of two kinds of CFRP plates, carbon/UP and carbon/V, was studied under severe environmental conditions. Immersion into the chemical solutions and accelerated weathering were executed on the CFRP plates and the weight change under each condition was measured. After those treatments, the plates were tested by tensile testing machine to measure the mechanical properties and observed by SEM to find the damage behaviour of the surface. Comparing the virgin plates and the chemically exposed plates, both plates show severe deterioration of the mechanical properties. But, the plates subjected to alkali solution show much larger reduction than those of acidic solution and carbon/V has better chemical resistance than carbon/UP. The material properties of CFRP plate exposed to the weathering were deteriorated linearly proportional to the exposure time.
