  • Borehole instability during drilling process occurs frequently when drilling through shale formation. When a borehole is drilled in shale formation, the low permeability leads to an undrained loading condition. The pore pressure in the compressed area near the borehole may be higher than the initial pore pressure. However, the excess pore pressure caused by stress concentration was not considered in traditional borehole stability models. In this study, the calculation model of excess pore pressure induced by drilling was obtained with the introduction of Henkel's excess pore pressure theory. Combined with Mohr-Coulumb strength criterion, the calculation model of collapse pressure of shale in undrained condition is obtained. Furthermore, the variation of excess pore pressure and effective stress on the borehole wall is analyzed, and the influence of Skempton's pore pressure parameter on collapse pressure is also analyzed. The excess pore pressure decreases with the increasing of drilling fluid density; the excess pore pressure and collapse pressure both increase with the increasing of Skempton's pore pressure parameter. The study results provide a reference for determining drilling fluid density when drilling in shale formation.

  • This study was performed to estimate the degree of consolidation using excess pore water pressure in the very soft ground. The final settlement prediction methods by Hyperbolic, Asaoka and Curve fitting methods from the measured settlement data were used to compare with the degree of consolidation estimated by excess pore water pressure. The dissipated excess pore water pressure during embankment construction and the peak excess pore water pressure on the completed embankment were used for the estimation of the degree of consolidation. After completion of embankment, it was concluded that the degree of consolidation estimated from dissipated excess pore water pressure was more reliable than that from the peak excess pore water pressure. And, the degree of consolidation estimated from the surface settlement was nearly the same as settlement of each layer. The degree of consolidation estimated from dissipated excess pore water pressure was a little larger than that from settlement.

  • Weathered soil is one of the most representative soils in Korea. In this study, a series of cyclic triaxial tests was carried out to predict the post-cyclic deformation behavior of weathered soils in case of non-liquefaction. Excess pore pressure response during cyclic loading and volumetric strain during the dissipation of excess pore pressure were measured varying the confining pressure, relative density and cyclic stress ratio. Based on the test results, it Is found that the modified excess pore pressure ratio, excess pore pressure ratio normalized by cyclic stress ratio, is uniquely correlated with the number of cycles irrespective of confining pressure and cyclic stress ratio. Using the newly proposed MEPPR(modified excess pore pressure ratio) concept, it is possible to easily evaluate the excess pore pressure and the settlement of weathered soils due to cyclic loading by greatly reduced number of tests. It is also verified that the reconsolidation volumetric strain is independent of the way how the excess pore pressure was generated.

  • We investigate pore pressure conditions and reservoir compaction associated with oil and gas production using 3 different permeability models, which are all based on one-dimensional radial flow diffusion model, but differ in considering permeability evolution during production. Model 1 assumes the most simplistic constant and invariable permeability regardless of production; Model 2 considers permeability reduction associated with reservoir compaction only due to pore pressure drawdown during production; Model 3 also considers permeability reduction but due to the effects of both pore pressure drawdown and coupled pore pressure-stress process. We first derive a unified stress-permeability relation that can be used for various sandstones. We then apply this equation to calculate pore pressure and permeability changes in the reservoir due to fluid extraction using the three permeability models. All the three models yield pore pressure profiles in the form of pressure funnel with different amounts of drawdown. Model 1, assuming constant permeability, obviously predicts the least amount of drawdown with pore pressure condition highest among the three models investigated. Model 2 estimates the largest amount of drawdown and lowest pore pressure condition. Model 3 shows slightly higher pore pressure condition than Model 2 because stress-pore pressure coupling process reduces the effective stress increase due to pore pressure depletion. We compare field data of production rate with the results of the three models. While models 1 and 2 respectively overestimates and underestimates the production rate, Model 3 estimates the field data fairly well. Our result affirms that coupling process between stress and pore pressure occurs during production, and that it is important to incorporate the coupling process in the permeability modeling, especially for tight reservoir having low permeability.

  • The needs for reproducing in situ neutral pressure, and for having fully saturated specimens and pore pressure measuring system for consoildation testing were examined in respect to pore pressure development. undisturbed specimens of a sensitive development. undisturbed specimens of a sensitive marine soft clay were tested in the ANTEUS consolidometer with the application of four different magnitudes of back pressure(0,5, 40 and $70lb/in^2$) in order to investigate the effect of back pressure on pore pressure development during consolidation test. The effect of back pressure on pore pressure development during consolidation is striking for back pressure up to $40lb/in^2$) but, above this value, no measurable effects of back pressure variations on pore pressure development are evidenced.

  • This paper describes a systematic way of simultaneously identifying the ambient pore pressure and the rigidity index (=G/s$\_$u/) of soil by applying an optimization technique to the piezocone dissipation test result. An ambient pore pressure and optimal rigidity index were determined by minimizing the differences between theoretical excess pore pressures developed by Randolph & Wroth(1979) and measured excess pore pressures from piezocone using optimization technique. The effectiveness of the proposed back-analysis method was examined against the well-documented performance of piezocone dissipation tests (Tanaka & Sakagami, 1989), from the viewpoints of proper determination of selected target parameters and saving of test duration. It is shown that the proposed back-analysis method can evaluate properly the ambient pore pressure and the rigidity index by using only the early phase of the dissipation test data. Also, it is shown that with the optimized rigidity index and ambient pore pressure the proposed back-analysis method permits the horizontal coefficient of consolidation to be identified rationally.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the dissipation pattern of excess pore pressure after liquefaction which governs the post-liquefaction behavior of liquefied sand deposits. 1-g shaking table tests were carried out on 5 different kinds of sands, all of which had high liquefaction potentials. During the tests excess pore pressure at various depths, and surface settlements were measured. The measured curve of the excess pore pressure dissipation was simulated using the solidification theory, and from the analysis of the velocity of dissipation, the dissipation pattern of excess pore pressure after liquefaction was examined. The dissipation velocity of excess pore pressure after liquefaction had a linear correlation with the effective grain size ( $D_{10}$) divided by the coefficient of uniformity ( $C_{u}$), and the increase in the initial relative density of the ground played a role in shifting this correlation curve toward an increased dissipation velocity. From the correlation, an approximate method was recommended for prediction of the dissipation curve of excess pore pressure after liquefaction in saturated sand deposits.s.s.

  • Generally numerical analysis of tunnel lining, under dynamic loading condition, performed not considering pore pressure. But if tunnel excavated under the surface of water, such as bottom of the sea, the river bed, tunnel lining can take pore water pressure. It may be different from evaluated numerical analysis not considering pore pressure. Therefore tunnel design should consider effect of water pressure acting on tunnel lining.

  • To investigate the undrained shear strength characteristics of marine soils with high water content, high compressibility and weak bearing capacity, a series of undrained triaxial tests with pore pressure measurements on undisturbed and disturbed Banwol marine clay in normally consolidated and overconsolidated states is carried out. The results and main conclusions of this study are summarized as follows : 1 . When the consolidation pressure is increased, the maximum deviator stress of disturbed and undistubed clay in normally consolidated state is increased. Pore pressure parameters and internal friction angle of undisturbed clay are greater than those of disturbed clay. 2. The relationship between pore pressure and axial strain of undisturbed clay in normally consolidated state can be expressed as a hyperbolic function like stress-strain relation proposed by Kondner. 3. In the pore pressure-axial strain relation of disturbed clay in normally consolidated state, failure ratio R'f is greatly deviated in the range of 0.7~0.9 proposed by Christian and Desai. 4. For overconsolided clay, when overconsolidation ratio (OCR) is increased, normalized maximum deviator stress is increased and maximum pore pressure is decreased gradually. 5. Cohesion of overconsolidated clay is greater than that of nomally consolidated clay and internal friction angle slightly is decreased. 6. Pore pressure parameter at failure (Af) of overconsolidated clay is varied with OCR, Af becomes negative values with increment in OCR
