The Relationship among Gender Stereotype, Role Conflict and Organizational Commitment of Male nurses (남자간호사의 성 고정관념 역할갈등 및 조직몰입 간의 관계)

  • Purposes: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between male nurse's gender stereotype, role conflict and organizational commitment. Methodology: Data were collected from 169 male hospital nurses from August, 2016 until September. The Male nurse's gender stereotype, role conflict and organizational commitment were measured using a structured questionnaire. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS/win 23.0 for windows. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson's correlation were used. Findings: There were statistically significant differences in the gender stereotype by general characteristics such as age and military duty. There were statistically significant differences in the role conflict by general characteristics such as education level and position. There were statistically significant differences in the organizational commitment by general characteristics such as the hospital's location and hospital type. Gender stereotype and role conflict had no significant correlation (r=-0.050, p=.516). A statistically significant positive correlation was detected between male nurse's gender stereotype and 'continuance commitment' (r=0.272, p<.001). A statistically significant positive correlation was detected between male nurse's role conflict and 'continuance commitment' (r=0.178, p=.021). Practical implications: The result of this study indicate that to reduce role conflict of workplace environment and induce the affective commitment of male nurses within a female-centered nursing organization should be sought.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the social support system for social integration by analyzing the effect of multicultural experiences on multicultural perception and stereotype and the meditating effect of multicultural perception. The research result is summarized as follow : First, multicultural perception is differently influenced according to multicultural experiences. That is, multicultural experiences have found to have the positive effect on multicultural acceptance and the negative effect on rejection about other cultures or prejudice about other cultures. Second, the result which analyzed the effect of multicultural perception on stereotype has found that acceptance about other cultures doesn't have any effect on stereotype. However, it can be found that the prejudice and rejection about other cultures are verified to be the variables which have the positive effect on stereotype. Third, the result which analyzed the direct effect of multicultural experiences on stereotype and the indirect effect through multicultural perception has found that multicultural experiences don't have any direct effect on stereotype, but do have the indirect effect through multicultural perception. With the help of information technology.

Stereotypes of the Poor Drinker Held by University Students (여자대학생이 인지하는 남성의 음주행위에 대한 고정관념 분석)

  • The purpose of this research is to identify stereotypes toward the poor drinker held by students. Stereotypes toward the poor drinker were examined at two levels: to assess students' beliefs about the traits of the poor drinker and to categorize the traits into stereotypes. The main results of this study were as follows: 1) Students reported 97 traits associated with the poor drinker. 2) Hierarchical cluster analysis of the trait groupings revealed two high-level clusters: a cluster of 35 positive traits and a cluster of 62 negative traits. Within the positive and negative clusters, 15 middle-level categories, 5 positive categories(a kind patriarch, pure, thrifty and diligent, self-controlled, prudent), and 10 negative categories(isolated, dull, passive, not confidant, unsociable, repressed, unstable, egocentric, naive, childish) were identified. This results suggested that students believed negative stereotypes are more typical than positive ones.

Influences of Stereotypes and Emotions Toward Women Immigrants by Marriage on Social Distances (여성결혼이민자에 대한 고정관념과 감정이 사회적 거리감에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the social distance of college students toward women immigrants by marriage and influencing factors. The considered factors were stereotypes, emotions and socioeconomic variables. The subjects were 324 college students and the data were collected during October 15-29, 2007. Findings of this study are as follows: the college students' scores of social distance toward women immigrants by marriage were less than midpoint (3.0), which means that the social distance of college students toward women immigrants by marriage was not that high. The college students' score of negative stereotype and positive stereotype were very similar. The score of sympathetic emotion was a little higher than negative emotion and positive emotion. To find the factors affecting social distances, regression analysis was executed. The social distances of students were influenced by negative emotions and positive emotions toward the women immigrants by marriage. Stereotypes toward women immigrants by marriage did not have a significant influence on social distances. These variables accounted for 44% of the variance of social distances.

The Effects of Career Education Using Female Scientists Role Models on Elementary Students' Perceptions of Science Related Career (여성 과학자 역할모델 사례를 활용한 진로교육이 초등학생의 과학진로인식에 미치는 효과)

  • This study investigated the effect of career education using female scientists role models on science-related attitude, science career awareness, gender stereotype of science-related career, and image of scientists. Interaction effect with students' gender were also investigated. The subjects of this study were 70 $5^{th}$ grader. The experimental group was introduced career education using female scientists role models with 7 cases of female scientists in the form of 10 minutes movies or cartoons, while the comparison group performed reading science books. The results showed that science-related attitudes and science career awareness of experimental group were significantly higher than control group, not only for girls but has for boys. Gender stereotype of science-related career has changed more neutrally in experimental group. After the career education using female scientists role models, more female scientists were presented in students' image of scientist in DAST. This results showed positive effects of the career education using female scientists role models and educational implications were discussed.

The Effect of Public Frame, Stereotype, and Twitter Remediation on Country Reputation: Focused on Japan and China's Country Reputation around Diaoyudao Issue (공중 프레임, 고정관념, 트위터의 재매개(remediation)가 국가명성에 미치는 영향: 댜오위다오 이슈를 둘러싼 일본 및 중국 명성을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this paper is to explore the effect of stereotype, public frame, and Twitter remediation on country reputation. Diaoyudao/Senkaku dominium dispute was chosen which has been a lasting territorial problem between Japan and China. According to a survey conducted toward 210 Koreans aged 20 to 40, stereotype of Japan and China has effects on each reputation. Legitimacy-securing frame only affect China's country reputation. While stereotype of Japan and 'attribution to Japan's responsibility' frame significantly interacted with Japan's country reputation, stereotype of Japan and 'attribution to both sides' responsibility' frame also interacted with Japan. Also, Twitter remediation activity categorized into producing, distributing and viewing was examined. Only producing and viewing had effects on Japan's reputation. In terms of interaction, the more opinion leaders do distributing, the more they agree on attribution to both sides' responsibility frame, and recognize China's reputation more positive. Consequently, it was proved that Twitter opinion leaders interpreted public frame and recognized country reputation in a different way compared to the normal Twitterians.

The Effect of Female University Students' Gender-Role Stereotype on Sexual Assertiveness: Mediating Effect of Self-Esteem (여대생의 성역할고정관념이 성적자기주장에 미치는 영향: 자아존중감의 매개효과)

  • This study focused on the sex culture and the sexual rights of women, examining the gender-role stereotype that is related to the protection of the sexual rights of female college students and identifying the influence of self- esteem. The research was conducted on gender-role stereotypes, sexual assertiveness, and self-esteem among female university students attending four-year universities in Seoul and Gyeonggi. Four hundred eighty-two copies were used for analysis. The Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to identify the correlation between the variables. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify the mediated effects of self-esteem in the effects of gender-role stereotypes on sexual assertiveness. The Sobel test was conducted to confirm that the effects were statistically significant. The results of this study were as follows. First, the gender-role stereotype had negative correlations with self-esteem and sexual assertiveness. Self-esteem had positive correlations with sexual assertiveness. Second, self-esteem was found to be a partial mediating factor when the gender-role stereotype had a statistically significant effect on sexual assertiveness. Therefore, a coping strategy under the influence of the gender-role stereotype is necessary for improving the sexual assertiveness skill of female students. This study also suggests the need for sex role-related education programs or counseling on self-esteem.

Effect of Stereotype Threat on Spatial Working Memory and Emotion Recognition in Korean elderly (노화에 대한 고정관념 위협이 노인의 공간 작업기억 및 정서인식에 미치는 영향)

  • We examined the effect of stereotype threat (STT) on spatial working memory and facial emotion recognition in Korean elderly. In addition, we investigated the role of expected moderator such as self-perception of aging. Seventeen seniors (male=7) received basic cognitive tests including K-WMS-IV, MMSE and answered self-report questionnaires including self-perception of aging, anxiety of aging, attitude toward aging and age identity on the first visit. On the second visit, they were exposed to negative stereotype by reading a script detailing cognitive decline related to aging while a control group was exposed to a neutral content. Following the exposure, they were tested on a spatial-working memory task (Corsi-block tapping task) and emotion recognition task (facial expression identification task). The results showed that the seniors exposed to STT showed significantly lower performance on emotion recognition task (p < .05) (i.e., especially on the more difficult facial stimuli). In addition, there was a significant interaction between STT and self-perception of aging (p< .05), indicating that those who have positive self-perception of aging did not show impairment in emotion recognition task and difficult spatial working memory task under STT. On the other hand, those with negative self-perception of aging showed impaired performance under STT. Taken together, the current study suggests that being exposed to STT could negatively influence cognitive and emotional functioning of elderly. Interestingly, having a positive self-perception of aging could protect the underperformance caused by STT.

The Influence of Husbands' Sex Role Stereotype, Intercultural Sensitivity, and the Acceptance of Their Wives' Culture on Their Wives' Acculturation and Marital and Life Satisfaction in Multicultural Family: Daegu and Gyeongbuk Area (남편의 성역할 고정관념, 다문화 감수성 및 아내문화수용이 결혼이주여성의 문화적응, 결혼 및 삶의 만족에 미치는 영향: 대구경북지역 다문화 가정)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of husbands' sex role stereotype, intercultural sensitivity, and the acceptance of wife's culture on immigrant women's acculturation, marital satisfaction and life satisfaction in multi-cultural family in Korea. The data of 100 immigrant women and their husbands were analyzed. Husbands' mean age was 41.6 and wifes' mean age was 29.6. The results of this study are as follows. The first, husbands' sex role stereotype, intercultural sensitivity and the acceptance of wives' culture together explain only marginalization among wives' acculturation(integration, assimilation, segregation, and marginalization) significantly, but individual variable's effect was not significant. The second, husbands' acceptance of wives' culture explain marital and life satisfaction significantly. Third, only marginalization among four types of acculturation explain significantly marital and life satisfaction significantly. integration explain only life satisfaction significantly. Husbands' sex role stereotype is related with the acceptance of their wives' culture and their intercultural sensitivity negatively. In wives' acculturation, there is low positive correlation between assimilation and integration and moderate negative correlation between assimilation and marginalization. This study revealed that the marital and life satisfaction of immigrant women in intercultural family in Korea are explained by acculturation which was influenced by their husband's acceptance of wives' culture and they are not only immigrant wife's problem but multicultural problem.

Influence of Sexual Attitude, Gender Stereotype and Self-Esteem on Gender Egalitarianism in Nursing Student (간호대학생의 성태도, 성고정관념, 자아존중감이 양성평등의식에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of sexual attitudes, sexual stereotypes, and self-esteem on gender egalitarianism among nursing students. This study was based on a questionnaire administered to a total of 174 nursing students. Data were collected from October 15 to November 31, 2020. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression with the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. The results of the study showed that the gender egalitarianism of the subjects differed statistically according to sex (t=-3.091, p=.002). Gender egalitarianism had a negative correlation with gender stereotype (r=-.811, p<.001) and a positive correlation with self-esteem (r=.345, p<.001). Gender stereotypes (β=-.787, p<.001) were the most influential factors in the gender egalitarianism among nursing students, with an explanatory power of 65.4%. Hence, educational measures should be taken to reduce gender stereotypes to improve the gender equality awareness of nursing students.
