  • A method of plane expansion of reinforced concrete apartments using precast concrete was developed. The method increased the stiffness of the precast slab using two ribs and allowed to cast concrete for multi stories. The proposed precast system is capable to construct concrete slabs without props. Ten reinforced concrete slabs were tested in order to investigate the stiffness increase of the developed precast slab with two rids. Comparison between the proposed precast slab and the slab without ribs indicated that the deflection of the precast slab was decreased by using rids.

  • This paper summarizes experimental results for studying feasibility and structural behavior of' a half slab which is getting popularity in recent building construction in favour of the savings in manpower, coats, and construction period. 17 specimens were tested to investigate and analyze the flexural strength of precast concrete slab, half slab, and half slab-wall joint. The primary variables of the testing program were: thickness of precast concrete slab, truss mesh shape, and type of loadings. Test results show that the flexural strength of precast concrete slab in reverse loading is lower than the design strength, but the flexural strength of precast concrete slab, half slab and half slab-wall joint in direct loading is higher than the design srength. No horizontal cracks were found in the connection between insitu concrete and precast concrete slab. The flexural strength of half slab and half slab-wall joint was the same as that of reinforced concrete members. This study concludes that there will not be any structural problem in using a half slab reinforced by truss mesh if props spacing of 2.0m-2.5m, cleanness, and rough finishing between precast concrete and insitu concrete slab are kept.

  • Precast concrete slab track has been already turned out to be more efficient than cast-in place concrete slab track in view of the easiness of construction and the quality control of concrete. Thus, there is a great need to bring in the precast slab track system. In order to develop the realistic precast slab track system that is well conformed to our circumstances, the performance criteria of slab track, and the state-of-the art of precast slab track systems that are used in other countries are briefly discussed here.

  • Precast concrete slab track is a track structure to be installed by transporting and assembling precast concrete slabs manufactured at the factory. This method can improve concrete quality, provide easy maintenance and reduce construction time, compared with in-situ concrete track. However, the concrete slabs being continuously connected in longitudinal direction, due to the temperature change between summer and winter, the openings at slab joints have occurred. Thus, in this study, to identify the cause of this opening of slab joint, the joint opening caused by temperature drop in the longitudinally continuous precast concrete slab track has been predicted using three-dimensional finite element analysis, and compared with field measurements. Based on the proven model, the slab joint opening, and the stress pattern of concrete slab and steel reinforcement according to concrete slab-base friction properties, concrete-reinforcement bond properties, and prestressing were analyzed.

  • We proposed a design procedure for Korean Precast Slab Track system. Korean Precast Slab Track system cannot use the same design procedure to German slab track system because of different shapes and some problems. We identified the problems of German slab track design system that cannot simulate effects of loads. This proposed procedure is implemented for the commercial software of ABAQUS. Using this procedure, one can consider uncombined effects between slab panel and hydraulic sub base, effect of close sleepers.

  • This paper presents the shear capacities of hollow slab with plate and octagonal pillar type hollow sphere. Recently, the interest in precast hollow slab system for buildings is growing up according to the demand for high quality control and the increase in slab thickness. A hollow slab system is widely known as one of the effective slab system which can reduce self-weight of slab. However, hollow slabs are vulnerable to the deterioration in the shear strength due to the decrease of concrete at slab web which resists shear. Especially, in case of precast hollow slabs, it has joint surface between precast concrete slab modules along transverse axis of slab, and shear failure, that is caused by cracks at joints, has to be prevented. Therefore, in this study, shear capacity of the I-slab system is evaluated by 3-points-supported shear test along the longitudinal and transverse axis of slab specimen. Test results showed that I-slab had enough shear strength compared to theoretical shear strength even if it included the joint surfaces.

  • Recently, precast concrete products have been increasingly used in the construction of bridges except for special bridges like long-span bridge due to their easy and high-quality construction. Specially the use of precast prestressed concrete hollow box slab bridges is also increased due to the merits in their construction. Thus, an experimental evaluation of flexural behavior of the precast PSC hollow box slab bridges and a development of effective analytical technique for the behavior are necessary. For the development, experimental study on the flexural behavior of the precast bridges up to ultimate states is needed. In this study, two full-scale precast PSC hollow box slab girders are manufactured and full-scale flexural failure tests of the girders subjected to cyclic loading are carried out. For the failure analysis of the girders, the so-called volume control method is applied to finite element analysis of the precast PSC hollow box slab girders discretized using multi-layered shell elements. The analytical results by the volume control method is verified by comparing with test results.

  • Precast concrete can be used to reduce construction period and enhance construct ability. However structural problems could be occurred due to the wrong application of boundary condition and misunderstanding of structural behavior in the process of segmentation of original structure system. I experienced a serious deflections and cracks due to the increase of bending moment and creep after the construction of precast concrete slab, and we learned that this is from the misunderstanding of support conditions and structure behaviors of precast slab panel. Two support columns under the precast slab are inserted to reduce the bending moment, and the camber according to jacking force should be estimated for the structural safety during the reinforcing work. A proper support condition and the flexural stiffness of precast concrete slab were applied to check the deflection and crack for existing structure by inverse analysis, and we can estimate the camber according to jacking force of the precast concrete slab, and suggest a method to make safe structure.

  • This research was conducted to determine the optimum lifting positions on precast concrete slabs for precast concrete pavement construction, based on the analysis of concrete stress distribution under various lifting conditions. To analyze stresses in concrete slabs, the finite element method was implemented and a numerical model of the precast slab that was going to be used in the experimental construction was developed. Changes in the stress distribution due to the lifting angle were investigated because slab lifting is not always performed in the perpendicular direction to the slab surface. In addition, the effect of the lifting level, the distance between the neutral axis of the slab and the lifting point, on the stress distribution was investigated since the lifting point is not always at the neutral axis of the slab. To consider the actual steel design of the precast slab, the effect of the reinforcement near the lifting point was also investigated. From this study, the optimum lifting positions of the precast slabs were determined according to the lifting angle and level, and the results were compared with the lifting positions used in the PCI standards.

  • Post-tensioning the full-depth precast slab longitudinally is to eliminate the tensile stresses in the transverse joints and to prevent any leakage through the joints. When the prestressing is applied to full-depth precast slab which does not composite steel girder, stress concentration occurs at the corners of shear pocket, and compressive stress is not uniformly distributed in the section of precast slab. In this paper, full-depth precast slabs using four different shapes of shear pockets are analyzed by commercial finite element program. Round type of shear pockets is superior to reduction in stress concentration.
