  • In this paper the effect of prestressing force on the first flexural natural frequency of beams is studied. Finite element technique is used to model the beam-tendon system, and the prestressing force is applied in the form of initial tension in the tendon. It is shown that the effect of prestressing force on the first natural frequency depends on bonded and unbonded nature of the tendon, and also on the eccentricity of tendon. For the beams with bonded tendon, the prestressing force does not have any appreciable effect on the first flexural natural frequency. However, for the beams with unbonded tendon, the first natural frequency significantly changes with the prestressing force and eccentricity of the tendon. If the eccentricity of tendon is small, then the first natural frequency decreases with the prestressing force and if the eccentricity is large, then the first flexural natural frequency increases with the prestressing force. Results of the present study clearly indicate that the first natural frequency can not be used as an easy indicator for detecting the loss of prestressing force, as has been attempted in some of the past studies.

  • This study investigated the effects of prestressing force on the natural frequency of concrete beams considering changes in the self-weight of the beam. For this, a finite element formulation was derived to account for the increase in the stiffness of a beam-tendon system due to the axial force and deformation induced by prestressing of the tendon. The developed finite element formulation was validated with the data obtained in laboratory experiments. The experimental natural frequencies of the small prestressed concrete (PSC) beam specimens were consistent with those obtained using the proposed method. The first natural frequency increased almost linearly as the prestressing force increased. The proposed method was then applied to four actual PSC bridges typically employed in the field. Different from the laboratory specimens, the first natural frequencies of the actual PSC bridges barely changed or increased with increasing prestressing force. The results of an analytical parametric study showed that the increase in the natural frequency strongly depended on the magnitude of the prestressing force relative to the total weight of the structure. Thus, the variation in the natural frequencies of the actual PSC bridges with high total weight relative to the prestressing force was negligible due to the application of the prestressing force.

  • In the prestressed concrete structures, the effective prestressing force of tendon is basically most important item for structural safety and serviceability. The frictional loss is one of the major items for determinating the effective prestressing force and depend on the construction accuracy of the structures. In this thesis, it will be analyzed and found through measured hydraulic jack pressure, tendon elongation and prestressing control system that the tendancy of apparent curvature friction coefficient, the ratio of jacking force and required prestressing force, the ratio of initial jacking force and required prestressing force and compatibility of specified friction loss coefficient. The specified control limit for curvature friction coefficient of prestressing control system is about 0.25 and wobble friction coefficient 0.005. Thus, the control limit should be modified according to changed vale of friction coefficient.

  • The research on the effect of the prestressing force on the frequency of PSC(Prestressed Concrete beam) has been conducted theoretically and experimentally, and a few theory has been presented. However, the presented theories show no agreement in predicting the effect of the prestressing force. In this paper, the theories on the effect of the prestressing force on the frequency of PSC beam are presented and evaluated using the experimental result. To obtain the experimental result, two PSC beam specimens were manufactured, and the modal test and analysis were performed. The modal analysis results revealed that the prestressing force increased the natural frequency of the PSC beam. Comparing predicted results using existing theories show that Kim's model, which substitutes the prestressing tendon with the equivalent beam, gives the best prediction result.

  • A general composite section of precast and cast-in-place concrete with prestressed and nonprestressed reinforcements was analyzed to calculate residual stresses and loss of prestressing force caused by internal constraints of concrete long-term deformation. From the analytical results, equations to design additional prestressing force and to evaluate resistant moment of the composite section were proposed. The equations shows that the additional prestressing force can be over-estimated if the loss rate of the first prestressing force is over-estimated from the lumped sum of a design code. The analytical procedure with the proposed equations has been applied to a composite section using the AASHTO Type 5 girder. The loss rates of the additional prestressing force appling to the precast concrete girder was less than those appling to the composite girder. However, the resistant moment of the additional prestressing force on the composite girder was much larger than that on the precast concrete girder. The additional prestressing force appling to the composite section was very effective for strengthening of the prestressed concrete composite girder.

  • An experiment was carried out to evaluate the lateral torsional stability of a girder with respect to the location and magnitude of prestressing force. The test of evaluating the lateral displacement and stability of a girder could cause an unexpected result due to various parameters, such as material nonlinearity, initial geometric imperfections, prestressing force, and loading and support conditions. Therefore, a small model testing was programmed to control the various parameters and assess the lateral torsional stability with respect to the prestressing force. This study proposed and fabricated an experimental apparatus that can satisfy the loading and in-plane and out-of-plane support conditions and also contol the prestressing force. The result of the experiment showed that the lateral torsional stability increased when the prestressing force was applied in the bottom flange of the girder. As a result, this study proposed an analytical equation that can account for the effect of the prestressing force in the lateral torsional stability of a girder.

  • In this paper, the prestressing order of tendons is studied to minimize a bursting force of an anchorage. The bursting forces is a primary factor of anchorage failures. The forces of the anchorage depend on the prestressing order and size of the tendons, if a lot of tendons are introduced to the anchorage. Many studies have been made to analyze the bursting force of the anchorage. However, the studies have been limited to the bursting forces of the anchorage having one or two tendons. PSC box girder bridges usually have a lot of tendons. And the difference of the bursting forces lies in the prestressing order of the tendons. As a result of the lack of studies on the prestressing order for the bridges, the order depends on the designer's intuition and experiences. It may be stated that this study should be useful for determining the reasonable prestressing order of tendons for the PSC box girder bridges.

  • Due to deterioration of bridge, usually be using the external prestressing method among repair reinforcement method. But, there is much to be desired about a detailed account, almost it has analysed by cambers of girders, deflections of middle span and upper, bottom stresses of girders. Also, it is not examined closely that effect of internal prestress by external prestressing. The purpose of this study is confirmed the effect of internal tendons by external prestressing, estimation of additional external prestressing force and look for exact external prestressing force.

  • The major objectives of this study are to investigate experimental and analytical behavior of composite steel plate strengthened by external post prestressing method and to study the increasing magnitude of load carrying capacity by the external post prestressing method. With installed strain gauges and LVDT, the change of structural behaviors according to the amount of prestressing force is measured and the effects of shear strengthening according to the degree of angle in tendon are studied. The analytical structural behavior according to the amount of prestressing force is also investigated using finite element method. The effectiveness of strengthening of external post prestressing method is proved and an efficient FEM model is suggested by comparing the test results and analyzing results.

  • Until now, the evaluation of prestressing force during the survice state has received limited attention. Only initial prestressing force is estimated by reading the pressure values of a hydraulic jack or by observing the initial elongation of tendons. In this study, the initial losses and time dependent losses of prestressing force have been monitored by installing 12 vibrating wire-type load cells at the part of P.C. box bridge of Gangbyun Riverside Highway. Also comparative study was made for measured prestressing losses and estimated values. 2-dimensional analysis was performed to see the trend of prestressing losses, and the results was compared with measured ones.
