  • Information systems development entails planning, analysis, design and construction phases. The analysis phase identifying user requirements is the most important of these phases. Since unidentified defects in the early phase causes increased work and costs as development proceeds, the quality of analysis results affects the quality of the resultant system. Major tasks in the analysis phase are data modeling and process modeling. Research on building a knowledge-based system for data modeling have been conducted much, however, not sufficiently for process modeling. As a system environment with high user interaction increases, research on process modeling methods and knowledge- based systems considering such environment are required. In this research, a process modeling framework for information systems with high user interaction is suggested and a knowledge-based system for supporting the suggested framework is implemented. A proposed model consists of the following tasks: event analysis, process analysis, and event/process interaction analysis. Event analysis identifies business events and their responses. Process analysis break down the processes of an enterprise into progressively increasing details. Decomposition begins at the function level and ends when the elementary process level is reached. Event/process interaction analysis verifies the results of process analysis and event analysis. A knowledge-based system for supporting a proposed process modeling framework is implemented in a web-based environment.

  • The modeling of business processes is key component of any improvement or re-engineering endeavor. Present trends of business modeling methodologies are to include the social context of an organization. Although various methodologies have been developed specially for the business process field and have a social context, it is not in terms of goals and customers, but processes, activities, and tasks. We describe our stance on business process modeling, based on the viewpoint of goal and customer. First, we formalize a goal-oriented business process model and its evaluation mechanism. Second, we propose a methodology of business process modeling, which starts from perceiving and describing interactions between organization and customer from the customer's viewpoint.

  • Entity-relationship modeling for designing relational database is a very complicated thinking process that requires extensive knowledge and experiences. It is very likely that designers make mistakes in this process. In order to minimize the mistakes, a systematic method to guide the thinking process is needed. In this research, an entity-relationship modeling system is developed, which resolves the whole process of information modeling, data modeling, and functional dependency relationship analysis into small and simple decision-making steps. Therefore, it can reduce the possibility of making decision errors and improve the efficiency of the modeling process. It's functionality and efficiency is verified through some modeling examples. It is expected that the modeling system can be commercialized, if some functions are added, such as detection, warning, and correction of decision errors, and educational help.

  • Knowledge-based services are largely dependent upon human-driven works. Therefore, considering human characteristics is required when modeling processes for knowledge-based services. As an emerging technology for Business Process Management, Human Interaction Management and its supportive process management can be an alternative to deal with human-driven processes. However, current HIM does not suggest concrete method for modeling conditions that are essential to realize supportive process management. And the condition modeling of HumanEdj, the only HIM software implemented, reveals the problem of complexity. As a solution, this paper suggests a fact-oriented ontological approach to process modeling. The approach uses human-friendly form of facts for condition modeling.

  • Business Process is a set of interrelated business functions, which are defined by various business process rule and that will lead a company to accomplishing a specific organizational goal. Many business organizations are using process modeling methods for their business process management, but mostly these methods are accomplished by Human-Based activities. These human-based activities cause unexpected design anomalies in modeling phase. If process engine executed without design anomalies detection, that will be lead to huge loss on costs. To ensure that there is no design anomalies in modeling phase and to detect anomalies of predefined actions within modeling tools are important issues in business process management. In this paper, we provide specific types of design anomalies, which can effectively use to detect design anomalies in business process modeling phase.

An UML/XML-Based Business Process Definition Tool (UML/XML 기반의 비즈니스 프로세스 정의 도구)

  • Proposed in this paper is a standard-compliant business process modeling tool which is based on the UML(Unified Modeling Language) activity diagram and produces an XPDL(XML Process Definition Language) file as an output. The XPDL is a standard process definition exchange format by WfMC (Workflow Management Coalition). To develop an UML/XPDL-based modeling tool, the mapping of modeling elements between activity diagram and XPDL format is conducted after the detailed analysis of each modeling specification. As a result of this mapping, it is revealed that modeling elements of each activity diagram and XPDL must be expanded. So new modeling elements are identified and added to each specification. Based on this mapping, the prototype system is developed, and the usefulness of the developed system is shown through the case study.

  • Organizational change projects such as Business Process Redisign (BPR) have been perceived to incur high risk due to their high management complexity, enterprise-wide impace, and steep project cost. This research intends to reduce such risk by developing a systematic process redesign methods, called Dynamic Process Modeling (DPM) method. DPM integrates the customer-oriented business process modeling technique with computerized visual simulation technique to promote better understanding of the target process and enable performance simulation of the proposed redesign alternatives prior to actual BPR implementations. For the cusstomer-oriented process modeling, we propose Dynamic-Event Process Chain (Dynamic-EPC) extending from the conceptual customer process model, Event-Process Chain (EPC). We compare DPM with four other implementation-level process modeling methods over eight criteria and demonstrate its effectiveness by applying it to the real-world hospital BPR case.

  • In this study, neighborhood facility and office building to target two cases were performed BIM process. In the initial design phase of the planning process was conducted for the BIM process modeling, BIM in the design stage while performing the required range and level of the process were studied. Accordingly, from architectural firms to leverage BIM process, the proposed methods, efficient use of the modeling process proposed. Quality management information and input for the modeling and design process should be determined from the initial design and construction, including, for each field should be considered BIM, which require an appropriate range of information, according to these requirements, BIM creation and expansion of the level of information should be clearly defined. Perform the procedure for BIM in the process of communicating with stakeholders is critical. In addition, the input data and output data needed to perform management and to perform at the level obtained BIM design process and the model should be clear.

  • Wastewater process models are the essential tools for understanding relevant aspects of wastewater treatment system. Wastewater process modeling provides more options for upgrades and better understanding of new plant design, as well as improvements of operational controls. The software packages (BioWin, GPS-X, Aqua designer, etc) solve a series of simulated equations simultaneously in order to propose several solutions for a specific facility. Research and implementation of wastewater process modeling in combination with computational fluid dynamics enable testing for improvements of flow characteristics for WWTP and at the same time exam biological, physical, and chemical characteristics of the flow. Application of WWTP models requires broad knowledge of the process and expertise in modeling. Therefore, an efficient and good modeling practice requires both experience and set of proper guidelines as a background.
