  • This paper introduces noise masking algorithm for 64 channel digital hearing aid. 125 Hz spectral resolution is maintained for 64 channels from 125 Hz to 8000 Hz. The same spectral masking processing effects as the cochlea are considered and applied for the present hearing aid noise reduction processing algorithm. Theoretical algorithm has been ported into assembler language program software and been embedded into a DSP IC chip for the digital hearing aid. Some parts of noise masking software program code are explained, and the results of the real-time noise reduction are verified by electro-acoustic measurements.

  • In this paper, the realization of a directional digital hearing aid was considered. Conventional time domain time delay method was replaced with digital filters in order to make any general-purposed DSP (Digital Signal Processing) chip to produce the similar directivity pattern. Both the time delay algorithm and the digital filter algorithm were initially evaluated by Matlab (Matrix laboratory) for comparison, and it was confirmed by CSR 8675 Bluetooth DSP IC (Digital Signal Processing Integrated Circuit) chip firmware realization. Some remote control features by a smart phone was added to the smart hearing aid for user interface easiness.

  • Background and Objectives: The integration of auditory-visual speech information improves speech perception; however, if the auditory system input is disrupted due to hearing loss, auditory and visual inputs cannot be fully integrated. Additionally, temporal coincidence of auditory and visual input is a significantly important factor in integrating the input of these two senses. Time delayed acoustic pathway caused by the signal passing through digital signal processing. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of hearing loss and hearing aid digital delay circuit on sound-induced flash illusion. Subjects and Methods: A total of 13 adults with normal hearing, 13 with mild to moderate hearing loss, and 13 with moderate to severe hearing loss were enrolled in this study. Subsequently, the sound-induced flash illusion test was conducted, and the results were analyzed. Results: The results showed that hearing aid digital delay and hearing loss had no detrimental effect on sound-induced flash illusion. Conclusions: Transmission velocity and neural transduction rate of the auditory inputs decreased in patients with hearing loss. Hence, the integrating auditory and visual sensory cannot be combined completely. Although the transmission rate of the auditory sense input was approximately normal when the hearing aid was prescribed. Thus, it can be concluded that the processing delay in the hearing aid circuit is insufficient to disrupt the integration of auditory and visual information.

  • Boron nitride is a new processing aid that is capable of eliminating gross melt fracture in several polymer processing operations. Its combinations with other processing aids i.e. fluoropolymers offer additional possibilities of obtaining enhanced processing aids that may take the processes to rates not realized before. A variety of different such combinations are discussed in this paper. The essential componenets are (1) boron nitride capable of eliminating gross melt fracture and (2) suitable lubricant capable of eliminating surface melt fracture such as stearates for the polyolefin processing and polyethylenes for the processing of fluoropolymers.

  • Objectives. Two main digital signal processing technologies inside the modern hearing aid to provide the best conditions for hearing aid users are directionality (DIR) and digital noise reduction (DNR) algorithms. There are various possible settings for these algorithms. The present study evaluates the effects of various DIR and DNR conditions (both separately and in combination) on listening comfort among hearing aid users. Methods. In 18 participants who received hearing aid fitting services from the Rehabilitation School of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences regularly, we applied acceptable noise level (ANL) as our subjective measure of listening comfort. We evaluated both of these under six different hearing aid conditions: omnidirectional-baseline, omnidirectional-broadband DNR, omnidirectional-multichannel DNR, directional, directional-broadband DNR, and directional-multichannel DNR. Results. The ANL results ranged from -3 dB to 14 dB in all conditions. The results show, among all conditions, both the omnidirectional-baseline condition and the omnidirectional-broadband DNR condition are the worst conditions for listening in noise. The DIR always reduces the amount of noise that patients received during testing. The DNR algorithm does not improve listening in noise significantly when compared with the DIR algorithms. Although both DNR and DIR algorithms yielded a lower ANL, the DIR algorithm was more effective than the DNR. Conclusion. The DIR and DNR technologies provide listening comfort in the presence of noise. Thus, user benefit depends on how the digital signal processing settings inside the hearing aid are adjusted.

  • Version control is an application to maintain consistency between different instances of the same document allowing operations such as navigation, differencing, and merging. Most version control systems, however, lack the support of functionality for cooperative writing environment, such as to represent and store the history of the actions of different individuals, to effectively differentiate and merge the individual actions including the text object, and to manage different access privileges for different granularity and individuals. With the help of Activity IDentification (AID) tag and its unique addressing scheme proposed in this paper, differencing and merging become simple and effective. Access and role control is improved by associating the access right table and role assignment in AID scheme also eliminates the requirements for large storage capacity for version information maintenance.

  • This paper has regarded mechanism design of cane-like passive type walking aid for the elderly using 3-RPS parallel manipulator. First, gait patterns of the elderly have been experimented. By means of motion capturing and image processing, we decided loaded forces and places of the cane when the elderly walked with a cane. Using these results we have developed a passive type walking aid. Second, the walking pattern has been simulated using dynamic analysis program, ADAMS and we find out the similarity between the real walking and the simulated walking. Finally after assuring the similarity, with adjusting the new mechanism design to the simulated walking we will decide whether the walking aid is safe and stable when the elderly walks with this cane-like walking aid. This paper will be basis for the development of the mechanism design applying 3-RPS parallel manipulator.

  • Low molecular weight liquid butadiene rubber (LqBR) is a processing aid that can resolve the migration problem of tire tread compounds. Various studies are being conducted to replace the petroleum-based processing oil with LqBR. However, the effect of the loading time of LqBR in the compounding process on silica dispersion and vulcanizate properties is not well known. In this study, we analyzed silica dispersion, vulcanizate properties, and viscoelastic properties of silica-filled tire tread compound according to the processing aid type (TDAE oil, non-functional LqBR) and, silane terminated LqBR) and input timing. In the non-functional LqBR compounds, the 'with TESPT' mixing procedure showed excellent dynamic viscoelastic properties while silane-terminated LqBR compounds showed that the 'after TESPT' mixing procedure was good for 300% modulus and abrasion resistance.
