When quicklime is added into soil for various purposes, abrupt changes in soil chemistry may affect essential ecological functions played by indigenous bacterial communities in soil. The magnitude of influence was estimated by observing changes in abundance and diversity of soil bacteria after quicklime treatment. When several soil samples were treated up to 20% (w/w) quicklime, plate count of viable cells ranged $10^2{\sim}10^3$ CFU $g^{-1}$, showing a reduction of more than $10^4$ times from viable counts of the untreated sample. Diversity of the bacterial isolates that survived after quicklime treatment was analyzed by conducting $GTG_5$ rep-PCR fingerprinting. There were only two types of fingerprints common to both 5% and 20% quicklime samples, implying that bacteria surviving at different strength of quicklime treatment differed depending on their tolerance to quicklime-treated condition. Isolates surviving the quicklime treatments were further characterized by Gram staining and endospore staining. All isolates were found to be Gram positive bacteria, and 85.4% of them displayed endospores state. In conclusion, most bacteria surviving quicklime treatment appear to be endospores. This finding suggests that most of ecological functions of bacteria in soil are lost with quicklime treatment.
The effectiveness of quicklime-based stabilization/solidification (S/S) in immobilizing lead (Pb) was assessed by performing semi-dynamic leaching tests (ANS16.1). In order to simulate landfill leaching conditions, the ANS 16.1 test was modified by using 0.014 N acetic acid (pH = 3.25) instead of distilled water. Artificial soil samples as well as field soil samples contaminated with Pb were tested. The effectiveness of quicklime treatment was evaluated by determining diffusion coefficients ($D_e$) and leachability indices (LX). A model developed by de Groot and van der Sloat was used to elucidate the controlling Pb leaching mechanisms. Overall, upon quicklime treatment Pb leachability was significantly reduced in a]l of the samples tested. The mean LX values were higher than 9 for an artificial soil sample containing 30% kaolinite treated with 10% quicklime and for a field soil sample treated with 10% quicklime, which suggests that S/S treated soils can be considered acceptable for "controlled utilization". Moreover, quicklime treatment was more effective in artificially contaminated soil with high kaolinite content (30%), indicating the amount of clay plays an important role in the success of the treatment. The controlling Pb leaching mechanism was found to be diffusion, in all quicklime treated samples.
Constructions on the soft clay layer of low strength and high compression bring out many problems. Recent studies show that strength of the soft clay layer could be substantially improved by mixing quicklime. For the purpose, a series of uniaxial compression tests were performed, using quicklime, in order to analyze strength characteristics. The major test results are summarized following : When water content is 90%, the strength is observed to precipitously increase between 3~14 days, then, the extent slowly increase in relative terms. When water content is 130%, the strength is observed to precipitously increase up to 28 days. When the strength of water content 90% is compared to that of water content 130%, the initial strength of the former is higher than that of the latter. The analyses show that the improvement of soft clay layers can be realized by the mixture of both quicklime and sand, and by the mixture of quicklime only.
This study was made to obtain the optium compaction of quicklime mixed with soil and to find out the relation of the quicklime mix ratio, dry density and strength by changing the compaction rounds. The obtained results are as follows. 1. The maximun dry density of unmixed soil in not distinguishable, while that of mixed soil is distinguishable. 2. What the increase of quicklime mix ratio, the dry density and strength increase and the optimum quicklime mix ratio could be obtained. 3. With the increase of compaction rounds, the dry density and strength increase, while they decrease in a certain limit and maximum dry density and strength could be obtained.
The effectiveness of fly ash-, quicklime-, and quicklime-fly ash-based stabilization/solidification(S/S) in chromium(Cr) contaminated soils was investigated using modified semi-dynamic leaching tests. Artificial soil samples composed of kaolinite or montmorillonite contaminated with chromium nitrate(4000 mg $Cr^{3+}\;kg^{-1}$ of solid) were prepared and then subjected to S/S treatment using quicklime, fly ash, or quick lime-fly ash. The effectiveness of the treatment was evaluated by assessing the cumulative fraction of leached $Cr^{3+}$ as well as, by computing the effective diffusivity ($D_e$) and the leachability index (LX) of the treated samples. The reduction in $Cr^{3+}$ release for the untreated samples was more pronounced in the presence of montmorillonite, which was attributed to sorption. Treatment with quicklime, fly ash, or quick lime-fly ash was significantly effective in reducing $Cr^{3+}$ release most probably due to the formation of pozzolanic reaction products and $Cr(OH)_3$ precipitation. The most effective treatment was observed in montmorillonite-sand soil samples treated with quicklime-fly ash (99.8% removal). The mean $D_e$ decreased significantly and the mean LX was greater than 9 for all treated samples, indicating that the treated soils were acceptable for "controlled utilization". The mechanism controlling $Cr^{3+}$ leaching from all treated samples during the first 5 days appeared to be diffusion.
The optimum dosage of quicklime in producing organic fertilizer using livestock wastes vith a greater than 80% water content was analysed. After one day had elapsed to allow for the organic fentilizer to dry, the quicklime dosage and the composition of the organic fertilizer were analysed. Any from done to the organic fertilizer was also assessed. The amount of the quicklime required to stabilize livestock wastes was determined by water content of livestock wastes. For J farm(slurry style) of which livestock wastes have 94.6% of water concentration, less than 3% of total amount of livestock wastes, for H farm (scraper style) of which livestock wastes have 85% of water concentration, less then 4% of total livestock wastes and Y farm(traditional style) of which livestock wastes have 80% of water concentration, less then 5% of total livestock wastes. Generally, in order to pack the organic fertilizer, water containing quicklime0stabilized livestock wastes should be less than 35%. It takes 9 days to keep this water content for the wastes from H and Y farms(less than 85% in water content), and 12 days for the wastes from J (94.6% in water content). According to the classification standard for compost constitution by Higgins, the crude fertilizers from all 3 farms had high grade $K_2O$ and CaO, the middle grade T-N and middle or low grade $P_2O_5$. Stabilization by quicklime is known to inhibit bacterial decomposition of organic matter and the activity of pathogenic organisms. In this study, more then 99.99% of coliform group, fecal group and viable cell count were reduced. Our results indicate that livestock wastes of greater 80% water content could be used to produce organic fertilizer without the addition of a material for moisture control.
These materials in architecturally glass or metal have weaknesses such as inadequate insulating quality, combustibility and toxic gases in fires substance. However, Autoclaved Lightweight Concrete(ALC) has excellent thermal insulation properties and seem to possess the superb insulating quality as substitute of existing exterior materials. This research is to compare experimentally to the kind of the strength properties of ALC materials which mixed with blast furnace slag pounder and silica fume. For the purpose of increasing the strength, the plastic states of ALC evaluate the physical characteristics as microstructure and strength according to various specific gravity. According to the quicklime quantity the compressive strength is proportionate depend on the absolute dried specific gravity. When not putting in 10% quicklime, the compressive strength appeared most lowly with 14.0MPa. When putting in the quicklime, the strength appeared higher with 15.1MPa. And strength of specimen containing 2.25% silica fume is 15.6MPa increased 10.3% than reference specimen 14.0MPa.
