A Study on the Effect of Food Intake on Radial Pulse using Fourier Analysis (음식섭취에 따른 좌우(左右) 촌관척(寸關尺) 6부위 맥파의 주파수 분석)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of food intake on the Fourier components of radial pulse wave. Methods: Thirty-one healthy male subjects participated in this study. Radial pulse was measured using 3 dimensional pulse imaging system (DMP-3000) before, right after, 40 minutes after, 80 minutes after and 120 minutes after food intake. Fourier transform was performed and the frequency and amplitude of Fourier components were analyzed. Results: 1. The frequency and the amplitude of Fourier components of radial pulse wave increased significantly after food intake. 2. The frequency of Fourier components increased right after food intake and then gradually decreased as time passed, however the amplitude of Fourier components increased and maintained certain levels and patterns throughout the experimental period of 120 minutes. 3. The change ratios of the frequency and the amplitude of Fourier components after food intake varied with the pulse measuring locations. Conclusions: Food intake exerts an influence on radial pulse wave, resulting in increase of frequency and amplitude of Fourier components.   • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of food intake on radial pulse amplitude. Methods : Thirty one healthy male subjects participated in this study. Radial pulse was measured using 3 dimensional pulse imaging system (DMP-3000) before, right after, 40 minutes after, 80 minutes after and 120 minutes after food intake. Results : 1. The amplitude of h1 increased significantly right after food intake compared to 'before food intake' at all 6 measuring points. Later on, it decreased back as time passed, however, even 120 minutes later, it was still higher than 'before food intake' 2. Pulse energy, which is calculated from pulse waves acquired with five sensors, increased after food intake as well. Conclusions : Food intake exerts an influence on radial pulse amplitude, resulting in increase of h1 and pulse energy.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to find the effects of Sa-Am stomach tonifying acupuncture on radial pulse through the parameters difference. Methods : Forty healthy subjects participated in this study, acupuncture group and control group were divided. Radial pulse were measured using 3 dimensional pulse imaging system(DMP-3000). 19 parameters that significantly changed were selected after comparing between acupuncture group and control group. Then, 19 parameters were analyzed before, immediately after, 30 minutes after and 60 minutes after acupuncture in acupucture group. Results : 1. Heart rate, pulse period, T/T1, T2/T, T4/T, T5/T, T-T4, (T-T4)/T and T4/(T-T4) significantly changed after acupuncture. 2. H1 Amplitude, H2 Amplitude, H4 Amplitude and H5 Amplitude significantly changed after acupuncture. 3. Area of Pulse Wave, Systolic Pulse Area, Diastolic Pulse Area and Area of W significantly changed after acupuncture. 4. AIx/HR significantly changed after acupuncture. Conclusion : Stomach Tonifying Acupuncture exerts an influence on radial pulse parameters. Further radial pulse change study on various acupuncture treatment is required.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of Sa-Am spleen-tonifying acupuncture on radial pulse in healthy human subjects. Methods : Forty healthy human subjects participated in this study, divided into acupuncture group and control group. Radial pulse was measured by 3 dimensional pulse imaging system(DMP-3000) before, right after, 30 minutes after and 60 minutes after acupuncture in the acupuncture group. The subjects in the control group didn't received acupuncture but took a rest and then the radial pulse was measured at the same time points as the acupuncture group. The parameters were analyzed by gender, measuring location, and measuring time point. However the time related parameters exceptionally were analyzed without distinction of measuring location. Results : 1. T, variance of period, T2/T, T4/T, (T-T4)/T, T4/(T-T4), and W significantly changed after acupuncture. 2. Pressure, amplitude of H1, amplitude of H2, Amplitude of H4 and pulse energy significantly changed after acupuncture. 3. Pulse area, systolic pulse area and diastolic pulse area significantly changed after acupuncture. 4. Elasticity, AIx and AIx/HR significantly changed after acupuncture. Conclusions : The effect of Sa-Am spleen-tonifying acupuncture in healthy human may be observed on time, amplitude, pulse area and augmentation index. Further studies on the effects of Sa-Am acupuncture using radial pulse are needed.

Effect of Hematocrit Level on the Radial Pulse Wave (적혈구 용적이 요골 동맥의 맥파에 미치는 영향)

  • In this work, we investigate the effect of blood hematocrit level on the radial pulse wave to study the clinical application of the pulse analyzer. For this purpose, we measured the radial pulse wave at the left Gwan for 15 males with abnormal high hematocrit level and 47 males with normal hematocrit level at the age of thirties and forties. Various variables of the radial pulse wave between two groups were analyzed by Student's T test. We found significant differences in several characteristic variables in the amplitude, time-span and the integrated area of the amplitude and time of the pulse wave. The systolic peak in the amplitude of the radial pulse wave was higher in abnormal high hematocrit group. In contrast, the third peak from the second incisure was higher and longer in normal hematocrit group. Our study suggests that the radial pulse wave can be useful in distinguishing the patient group with high hematocrit level and thus with high blood viscosity. Our finding may motivate research activities towards diverse clinical applications of the pulse wave.

The Effects of Sa-Am Acupuncture on the Radial Pulse in Healthy Human Subjects: A Comparative Study of Pericardium jung-gyuck and Triple Energizer jung-gyuck

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of Sa-am acupuncture with Pericardium jung-gyuck (SA-acu-PC) and Triple Energizer jung-gyuck (SA-acu-TE) on the radial pulse in healthy human subjects. Methods: Sixty healthy subjects participated in this study and divided into three groups randomly: Control group(C), Pericardium jung-gyuck group(PC), Triple Energizer jung-gyuck group(TE). Radial pulse was measured by 3 dimensional pulse imaging system (DMP-3000) before, right after, 30 minutes after, and 60 minutes after acupuncture. Results: 1. The changes observed in periodic parameters are considered as the common effects of both SA-acu-TE and SA-acu-PC. SA-acu-TE was more effective than SA-acu-PC in these effects. 2. The effects of SA-acu-PC appeared in the pulse amplitude, pulse area, and pulse power volume mainly at the left chon position, and 3. The effects of SA-acu-TE appeared in the radial augmentation index and main peak angle mainly at the right gwan position. Conclusions: The effects of SA-acu-PC and SA-acu-TE can be observed in the radial pulse. The increases in pulse amplitude, pulse area, and pulse power volume at the left chon may imply the effects of SA-acu-PC. And the decrease in the pulse power volume, the increases in radial augmentation index and main peak angle may imply the effects of SA-acu-TE.

  • The aims of this study are to investigate a logisitic regression equation of the vacuous pulse and the replete pulse for efficacy evaluation of clip-type pulsimeter by using magnetic Hall device. To evaluate the efficacy of clip-type pulsimeter by using magnetic Hall device as sensing the minute movement of a radial artery, one research clinical trial have been performed. The number of subject was 120, the clinical data of patients did treated with a normal statistical method. The systolic peak amplitude, the reflective peak amplitude and time, and the notch peak amplitude and time are analyzed major efficacy parameters to discern the vacuous pulse and the replete pulse. The equations included of five parameters such as systolic peak amplitude, the reflective peak amplitude and time, and the notch peak amplitude and notch amplitude time for determination of the vacuous pulse and the replete pulse were deducted by statistical logistic regression method. It suggests that the logistic regression equations are possible to develop the oriental algorithm for pulse diagnosis.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to find parameters to compare the effects of Sa-Am acupuncture with large intestine tonifying and sedating on radial pulse in healthy subjects. Methods : Sixty healthy subjects participated in this study, divided into large intestine tonifying acupuncture group, large intestine sedating acupuncture group and control group. Radial pulse was measured by 3 dimensional pulse imaging system(DMP-3000) before, right after, 30 minutes after and 60 minutes after acupuncture at Cun, Guan, and Chi in the acupuncture group and in the control group at the same time points. Results : 1. Angle of main peak and magnitude of fourier component significantly changed by integrated analysis of Cun, Guan and Chi. 2. Amplitude of H1, Pulse Power volume / min, elasticity, AIx / HR, Frequency and magnitude of fourier component significantly changed by analysis of Cun, Guan, and Chi. Conclusions : The effect of Sa-Am acupuncture with large intestine tonifying and sedating in healthy human may be observed on time, amplitude, pulse area, augmentation index and fourier components parameters. The parameters analysed in this study may be used to differentiate the effects between Sa-Am acupuncture with large intestine tonifying and sedating on radial pulse. Further studies on the effects of Sa-Am acupuncture using radial pulse are needed.

π/2 Pulse Shaping via Inverse Scattering of Central Potentials

  • It is shown that the inversion of the undamped Bloch equation for an amplitude-modulated broadband π/2 pulse can be precisely treated as an inverse scattering problem for a Schrodinger equation on the positive semiaxis. The pulse envelope is closely related to the central potential and asymptotically the wave function takes the form of a regular solution of the radial Schrodinger equation for s-wave scattering. An integral equation, which allows the calculation of the pulse amplitude (the potential) from the phase shift of the asymptotic solution, is derived. An exact analytical inversion of the integral equation shows that the detuning-independent π/2 pulse amplitude is given by a delta function. The equation also provides a means to calculate numerically approximate π/2 pulses for broadband excitation.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to find the effects of Sa-Am lung tonifying acupuncture on radial pulse through the parameters difference. Methods : Forty healthy subjects participated in this study, acupuncture group and control group were divided. Compared various parameters of radial pulse between two groups, and the significantly changed 16 parameters ware measured using 3 dimensional pulse imaging system(DMP-3000) before, right after, 30 minutes after, and 60 minutes after acupuncture at Chon, Gwan, Cheok in acupucture group. Results : After lung tonifying acupuncture, radial pulse 16 parameters were showed changes significantly according to the time at each measuring location. 1. Heart rate, T2/T, T5, T5/T and W/T significantly decreased, W significantly increased. 2. Modulus of elasticity significantly decreased in left Cheok. 3. Amplitude of H4 significantly increased in left Gwan and right Cheok. 4. AIx, AIxHR significantly decreased in left Gwan and significantly increased in right Chon. 5. Area of pulse, area of W significantly increased in right Cheok. 6. Pulse energy, energy/min, EIx significantly decreased in left Cheok. 7. Maximum variation time of each parameter is showed different according to the parameter. Conclusions : Lung tonifying acupuncture exerts an influence on radial purse parameters. Further radial pulse change study on various acupuncture treatment is required.
