  • This study presents experimental results from the performance test of a scaled reverberation chamber for measurement of sound insulation of panels. Experimental investigations were conducted in various parameters such as tunneling effect source locations, and maximum sound transmission loss. It is evident that the tunneling effect which means the variation with specimen location on the test frame gives rise to more than 3 dB deviation. One of the objective of this study that compares measured results between a real reverberation chamber and a simplified test apparatus, by using a specimen of a sandwich panel. It shows qualitatively resonable agreement from which one can find a potential to provide a design tool.

  • The neural net application was tried to develop the technique for monitoring the health status of a steel truss bridge which was scaled down to 1/15 of the real bridge for the laboratory experiments. The damage scenarios were chosen as 7 cases. The dynamic behavior, which was changed due to the breakage of the members, of the bridge was investigated by finite element analysis. The bridge consists of single spam, and eight (8) main structural subsystems. The loading vehicle, which weighs as 100 kgf, was operated by the servo-motor controller. The accelerometers were bonded on the surface of 7 cross-beams to measure the dynamic behavior induced by the abnormal structural condition. Artificial neural network technique was used to determine the severity of the damage. At first, the neural net was learnt by the results of finite element analysis, and also, the maximum detection error was 3.65 percents. Another neural net was also learnt, and verified by the experimental results, and in this case, the maximum detection error was 1.05 percents. In future study, neural net is necessary to be learnt and verified by various data from the real bridge.

  • In this study, wind tunnel test were conducted to improve an aerodynamic performance of HEMU400X pantograph system with 4 types of pantograph housing models. Experimental models were 1/4 scaled pantograph system, 1/4 scaled ground plate which is scaled down to real roof shape of HEMU-400x, and 4 types of pantograph housing models. The free stream of wind tunnel were 20, 40, 60, 70m/s. The lift and drag forces were measured with 2-axis load cell. And, Total pressure were measured with rake in the wake region of panhead. In addition, Surface flow visualization by tufts were performed to know flow characteristics around pantograph housing. According to the results of force tests and surface visualizations, pantograph housing shape is important part because the shape affects to pantograph system. Therefore, it is considered that adaption of pantograph housing is more advantageous to decrease drag and acoustic noise.

  • This paper presents a dynamic, electric-thermal model for a photovoltaic (PV) cell that combines electrical and thermal parameters. In this model, the irradiance and ambient temperature are used to calculate the PV cell temperature based on a five-layer thermal model. The cell temperature is then used in the electrical model to accurately adjust the PV cell output electrical characteristics and power. A custom experimental setup was built to test and verify the electrical and thermal characteristics of the PV cell and its surrounding layers. The electric-thermal model is validated using experimental data in realistic scenarios. This PV model can be scaled up and used to simulate PV systems in wide variety of applications, extreme environmental conditions, and fault conditions in real-time.

  • In this study we developed an integrated precast concrete decks for a rapid construction. The structural performance in the integrated precast bridge decks is evaluated by real-scale test bed and detailed finite element analyses. The numerical analysis results were compared with the experimental data from a real-scaled single-span precast/prestressed concrete bridge decks under truck loading. Parametric studies are focused on the various effects of external loads on the structural behavior for different locations and measuring points on the precast bridge decks. The assessment in this study indicates that the integrated precast bridge decks show an excellent structural performance as expected.

  • In the case of a fire disaster in a uni-directional road tunnel, it is important to determine the critical ventilation velocity to prevent the backflow travelling toward the tunnel exit where vehicles are stopped. The critical ventilation velocity is horizontal velocity to prevent hot smoke from moving toward the tunnel exit. According to Froude modelling, the model tunnel whcih was 300mm in diameter and 21 m in length was made of acryl tubes. Inner section of acryl tubes was clothed with polycarbonate. 1/20 scaled model vehicles were installed to simulate the situation that vehicles are stopped in the tunnel exit. Methanol in a pool type burner was burned in the middle of tunnel to simulate a fire hazard. In this study, the basis of determining the critical ventilation velocity is the ventilation flow rate that is able to maintain the allowable CO concentration in the tunnel section. We assumed that the allowable CO concentration was backflow dispersion index. Futhermore, We intended to find out CO distribution and temperature distribution according as we changed ventilation velocity. The results of this study were that no backflow happened when ventilation velocity was 0.52 m/s in the case of 5.75 kW. If we adapt these results of a fire disaster releasing 10MW heat capacity in real tunnel which is 400m in length, no backflow happens when ventilation velocity is 2.31m/s. After we figured out dimensionless heat release rate and dimensionless ventilation velocity of model test and those of real test to verify experimental correctness, we tried to find out correlation between experimental results of model tunnel and those of real tunnel.

  • This paper demonstrates a real-time hybrid substructuring (RTHS) shake table test to evaluate the seismic performance of a base isolated building. Since RTHS involves a feedback loop in the test implementation, the frequency dependent magnitude and inherent time delay of the actuator dynamics can introduce inaccuracy and instability. The paper presents a robust stability and performance analysis method for the RTHS test. The robust stability method involves casting the actuator dynamics as a multiplicative uncertainty and applying the small gain theorem to derive the sufficient conditions for robust stability and performance. The attractive feature of this robust stability and performance analysis method is that it accommodates linearized modeled or measured frequency response functions for both the physical substructure and actuator dynamics. Significant experimental research has been conducted on base isolators and dampers toward developing high fidelity numerical models. Shake table testing, where the building superstructure is tested while the isolation layer is numerically modeled, can allow for a range of isolation strategies to be examined for a single shake table experiment. Further, recent concerns in base isolation for long period, long duration earthquakes necessitate adding damping at the isolation layer, which can allow higher frequency energy to be transmitted into the superstructure and can result in damage to structural and nonstructural components that can be difficult to numerically model and accurately predict. As such, physical testing of the superstructure while numerically modeling the isolation layer may be desired. The RTHS approach has been previously proposed for base isolated buildings, however, to date it has not been conducted on a base isolated structure isolated at the ground level and where the isolation layer itself is numerically simulated. This configuration provides multiple challenges in the RTHS stability associated with higher physical substructure frequencies and a low numerical to physical mass ratio. This paper demonstrates a base isolated RTHS test and the robust stability and performance analysis necessary to ensure the stability and accuracy. The tests consist of a scaled idealized 4-story superstructure building model placed directly onto a shake table and the isolation layer simulated in MATLAB/Simulink using a dSpace real-time controller.

  • Multiple earthquakes that occur during short seismic intervals affect the inelastic behavior of the structures. Sequential ground motions against the single earthquake event cause the building structure to face loss in stiffness and its strength. Although, numerous research studies had been conducted in this research area but still significant limitations exist such as: 1) use of traditional design procedure which usually considers single seismic excitation; 2) selecting a seismic excitation data based on earthquake events occurred at another place and time. Therefore, it is important to study the effects of successive ground motions on the framed structures. The objective of this study is to overcome the aforementioned limitations through testing a two storey RC building structural model scaled down to 1/10 ratio through a similitude relation. The scaled model is examined using a shaking table. Thereafter, the experimental model results are validated with simulated results using ETABS software. The test framed specimen is subjected to sequential five artificial and four real-time earthquake motions. Dynamic response history analysis has been conducted to investigate the i) observed response and crack pattern; ii) maximum displacement; iii) residual displacement; iv) Interstorey drift ratio and damage limitation. The results of the study conclude that the low-rise building model has ability to resist successive artificial ground motion from its strength. Sequential artificial ground motions cause the framed structure to displace each storey twice in correlation with vary first artificial seismic vibration. The displacement parameters showed that real-time successive ground motions have a limited impact on the low-rise reinforced concrete model. The finding shows that traditional seismic design EC8 requires to reconsider the traditional design procedure.
