  • The objective of this study is to optimize the four-bed six-step pressure swing adsorption(PSA) process for high purity $CH_4$ recovery from the biogas. The effects of P/F(purge to feed) ratio and cycle time on the process performance were evaluated. The cyclic steady-states of PSA process were reached after 12 cycles. The purity and recovery rate of product gas, pressure and temperature changes were constant as the cycle repeated. It was shown that the P/F ratio gave significant effect on the product recovery rate by increasing the amount of purge gas in purge and regeneration step. The optimal P/F ratio was found to be 0.08. As the cycle time increased, the product purity decreased by increasing the feed gas flow rate. It was found that the optimal operating conditions were P/F ratio of 0.08 and total cycle time of 1,440 seconds with the purity of 97%.

  • The effects of solvent type and concentration, solid/liquid ratio, extraction time and repeated extraction on recovery of keratinase from solid-state fermentation (SSF) of chicken feather by a local Streptomyces sp. NRC 13S were investigated in order to establish the experimental conditions for keratinase yield. Among solvents tested, 0.5% (v/v) glycerol was the best. Box-Behnken design was used to investigate the effect of relevant variables on keratinase recovery. The factors investigated were solid/liquid ratio (1:1.66-1:6.66 g/mL), glycerol concentration (0.5-5% v/v) and repeated extraction (1-5 cycle). The results showed that the maximum recovery of keratinase (6933.3 U/gfs) was obtained using 0.5 (v/v) glycerol as extracting solvent, in a solid/liquid ratio of 1:5 and three extraction cycles.

  • Heat regenerator occupied by regenerative materials improves thermal efficiency of regenerative combustion system through the recovery of sensible heat of exhaust gases. By using one-dimensional two-phase fluid dynamics model, the unsteady thermal flow of regenerators with spherical particles were numerically analyzed to evaluate performance of ratio of waste heat recovery and temperature efficiency and to suggest optimized conditions of heat regenerator. It is predicted that exhaust gases temperature at regenerator outlet of 3.5$\times$10$^{6}$ kcal/hr heat regenerator is even lower than design condition and ratio of waste heat recovery is 75.8%.

  • The flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has the attractive characteristics that can adjust the current limiting level by the turns ratio between two coils. Since the recovery characteristics of a superconducting element m the flux-lock type SFCL were dependent on the turns ratio between two coils, the analysis for the recovery characteristics of this type SFCL together with the current limiting characteristic is necessary to apply it to power system. When the applied voltage and load impedance were same, the recovery time of the superconducting element was 0.32sec in case that the turn's ratio between the primary and secondary windings was 63:21. In the meantime, when the turn's ratio of secondary winding increased to 3 times, the recovery time became longer to 0.58sec.

  • Polyimide hollow fiber membrane modules were prepared in order to investigate the process of multi stage gas separation. The modules performance was carried out using 50/50 of $N_2/SF_6$ mixed gas. The membrane modules has been tested for measuring gas flow rate and concentration under various stage cut at 0.5 MPa. The membrane modules showed a high recovery ratio at the same stage cut as $N_2/SF_6$ selectivity increased. Two stage process was fulfilled for improving $SF_6$ recovery ratio and $SF_6$ concentration. Eventually, two stage process showed higher performance of $SF_6$ recovery ratio and concentration ($SF_6$ recovery ratio = 95%, $SF_6$ conc. = 98%).

  • Enhanced coalbed methane recovery (ECBM), as injecting $CO_2$ or $N_2$ into the coalbed methane (CBM) reservoir for increasing methane recovery, takes center stage in these days. ECBM makes a better recovery than the conventional production method, it called dewatering process. However the characteristics of injection gas affect to methane recovery, thus analysis on the mixed ratio of injection gas should be required. In this study, CBM reservoir model was built to estimate the methane recovery of ECBM method by different mixed ratio of injection gas. Additionally, to consider the characteristics of injection gas such as carbon captured storage, nitrogen re-injection, etc. economic analysis was performed. The results showed that ECBM cases produced methane almost twice as much as dewatering case and $CO_2$ 10% and $N_2$ 90% case resulted in the highest methane recovery among the mixed gas cases. On the other hand, the results of economic analysis showed that $CO_2$ 20% and $N_2$ 80% case made the highest total production profit. Therefore, both the recovery of methane and economical efficiency should be considered to apply ECBM process.

  • To determine the period and degree of full recovery of postoperative pulmonary function, the author performed seiral pulmonry function test with spirometry at preoperative period and 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th and 8th postoperative week in 64 patients who underwent chest surgery form 1990. 1. to 1990. 8. at Dep. of Thoracic & Cardiovascular surgery, Pusan National University Hospitcal, Pusan, Korea 28 patients underwent lung resection[Group A], 14 patients mediastinal and other thoracic surgery[Group B], and 22 patients heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass[Group C]. Al of them recovered normally and discharged without any complications. Their serial changes of pulmonary function test were compaired and its results was as follows; l. Over all mean recovery time of restrictive ventilatory function tests[ie, VC, ERV, IC, FEF1, FVC, FEF200-1200, MVV] were 4th & 6th postoperative week, and that of obstructive ventilatory function tests[ie., EFE25-75%, Vmax50] were 2nd postoperative week. 2. In patient who underwent lung resection surgery[Group A], FEF1 recovered in 4th~6th postoperative week and its ratio to preoperative value was 70% in pneumonectomy, and 75% in lobectomy. FVC recovered in 4th~6th postoperative week and its ratio to preoperative value was 65% in pneumonectomy, and 80% in lobectomy. MVV was recovered in 4th~8th postoperative week and recovery ratio was 80%, FEF200-1200 was recovered at 4th~6th postoperative week and its recovery ratio was 70%, FEF25-75% and Vmax50 was recovered in 2nd~4th postoperative week and recovered nearly to preoperative level. 3. In patient who underwent mediastinal and other thoracic surgery[Group B], FEV1 and FVC and recovered in 4th~6th postoperative week and the recovery ratio of FVC in blebectomy was 90%. MVV reached preoperative level in 4th~8th postoperative week. FEF200-1200, FEF25-75% and Vmax50 were recovered in 2nd~4th postoperative week and the recovery of FEF25-75% and Vmax50 in blebectomy was prominant. 4. In patient who underwent heart surgery[Group C], FEV1 and FVC were recovered in 4th~6th postoperative week. The recover ratio of FEF25-75% and Vmax50 was delaied to 6th~8th postoperative week From the above results we concluded that the recovery time of posoperative restrictive ventilatory disorder was 4th postoperative week and pulmonary complication would possibly occure during that period. So more intensive observations will be needed.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the motor recovery in 4 chronic hemiparetic patients with Fugl-Meyer (FM) and EMG characteristics before and after the training program. The training was performed at 1hr/day, 5days/week during 6 weeks in 4 chronic stroke patients. Electromyographic activities of the affected hand were recorded during isometric wrist flexion/ extension movements. In all patients, FM was significantly improved after the 6-week training. Onset/offset delay of muscle contraction significantly decreased in the affected wrist after the training. The co-contraction ratio of flexor/extensor muscles decreased significantly. Also, onset/offset delay of muscle contraction and co-contraction ratio correlates significantly with upper limb motor impairment and motor recovery. This EMG technique allows an objective evaluation of changes in muscle activity in post-stroke patients, providing easily measurable, quantitative indices of muscle characteristics.

  • We have developed a small-sized superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) device, which provides electric power with high quality to sensitive electric loads. In large magnets such as the SMES magnets the stability, which is determined by several factors, e.g. conductors cooling condition and operating current, magnets winding structure, is a crucial problem. The effect of the cooling condition, the copper ratio, and the conductor's size upon the recovery currents was investigated experimentally. The results indicate that the recovery current characteristics of the strands vary considerably according to their insulation method. In the fully insulated strands with a low copper ratio, the recovery current densities range from 10 to 20 % of their engineering critical current densities. The recovery current density of the 30-conductor with a cooling channel is about a factor of 1.8 higher than that without a cooling channel.

  • This paper presents a recovery technique for images with block-based corruption by transmission losses. Conventional methods that do not consider edge directions can cause blocked blurring artifacts. In this paper, we present a block recovery scheme using Haar wavelet features. The adaptive selection of neighboring blocks is performed based on the energy ratio f wavelet subbands. The lost blocks are recovered by linear interpolation in the spatial domain using selected block pairs. The proposed directional recovery method is effective for the strong edge because it exploits the varying neighboring blocks adaptively according to the edges and the directional information in the image. The proposed method outperforms the previous methods that used only a predefined set of neighboring blocks.
