  • The purpose of this study is to determine crucial factors of consideration in ensuring the successful implementation of research data management services. The study begins by extracting a range of service areas from their equivalent in existing research on data management services. It then collects relevant information via e-mail survey from eight individuals respectively overseeing research data management services at six university libraries and one institution located throughout the United States, Germany, and Australia. Having originated in overseas cases, the resulting factors of consideration were reviewed by domestic experts in research data management services. The finalized areas of research data management services consist of nine categories. The crucial factors of consideration in RDM services are connection between research services and research data management services; national/university-level/institutional agreements; metadata entry personnel and required elements; strategies for the provision of specialized staff; major service area selection through user demand analysis; effective linkage between research data and research results; and close cooperation with users and related organizations.

  • This study aimed to develop Research Data Management (RDM) Services in a domestic university library of Korea. In this study, elements and levels of RDM services are examined and in-depth interview was conducted with university researchers affiliated in Seoul National University, which has the largest amount of research fund among universities in Korea. Interview was conducted to analyze their data management practices and needs of RDM services. Interview results show researchers' lack of awareness toward Data Management Policy and data sharing obligations of funding agencies and academic journal publishers. Also, they had trouble managing research data systematically. However, many of the researchers understand the necessary of research data management and education of data management. Based on the interview result, service elements and contents are suggested for RDM services which is consisted of education services, professional consulting services, curation technical services. This study result will help to guide for the planning the future RDM service in university library of Korea.

  • In this study, we proposed a method to systematically manage research data in the field of condensed matter physics, which is the most active and interdisciplinary field. In the course of the research, a questionnaire was conducted for researchers in the field of condensed matter physics. The questionnaire was constructed based on the research data management tool Data Asset Framework (DAF) and the FAIR principle for data sharing and reuse. The current status of research data management in the field of aggregated material physics was collected from 14 researchers. The collected data consisted of data on the characteristics and basic information of researchers who answered the questionnaire, data preservation and management, and data sharing and access. By analyzing the collected questionnaire results, nine problems were drawn about the characteristics of research data in the field of aggregate material physics, data collection and production, data preservation and management, data sharing and access. In this study, suggestions were made to improve the problems derived from each aspect.

  • This study was started with the aim of grasping the current status of research data management of forestry engineering researchers. In order to achieve the research purpose, the survey was conducted using a tool called DAF (Data Asset Framework). DAF is an investigative tool that provides a means to identify, position, describe and evaluate how the agency manages research data. Using this DAF, the research data management status was analyzed for researchers in the field of forestry engineering at the National Institute of Forest Science. As a result of analysis, the current status and problems of the five categories such as the method and type of research data creation, sharing, storage, preservation, and reuse were identified, and solutions were presented in relation to the problems. This study is a basic investigation using a systematic tool such as DAF, and can be used as a reference for analyzing the current status and problems of research data when designing RDM system in a specific field.

  • The purpose of this study is to derive the detailed elements of each RDM function that can be applied to the development of research data management system in Geoscience field in Korea. Eight institutions related to RDM services were analyzed to achieve the research purpose. As a result of the analysis, 80 detailed elements of Geoscience RDM function were derived, and a survey was conducted to domestic experts to verify the derived details. As a result, 80 RDM functional details for Geoscience are presented in order of importance. The elements presented can be presented as functional details in the establishment and operation of RDM services in the field of Geoscience in research institutes or university libraries in Korea.

  • Increasing the value of data, paradigm shifts in research methods, and specific manifestations of open science indicate that research is no longer text-centric, but data-driven. In this study, we analyzed the services for DCC, ICPSR, ANDS and DataONE to derive key elements and functional requirements for research data management and services that are still insufficient in domestic research. Key factors derived include DMP writing support, data description, data storage, data sharing and access, data citations, and data management training. In addition, by presenting functional requirements to the derived key elements, this study can be applied to construct and operate RDM service in the future.

  • As the recent research environment and research paradigm have become data-driven, Open Science, based on openness and sharing of public research results, has emerged as a global agenda for scientific research. National policies for sharing and re-use of research data from publicly-funded research are in effect globally. Therefore, in Korea, it is urgent to build policies and infrastructure for sharing and re-use of research data. In this paper, we investigate the current status of research data management of science and technology research institutes in Korea. We conducted in-depth interviews with researchers from 22 research institutes belonging to the National Research Council of Science & Technology, and 20 universities in Korea, asking about terms of creation management utilization of research data, willingness to share data, and needs for sharing and re-use of research data. From these interviews, we drew implications for open research data and future directions.

  • Research Data Management (RDM) is a system that encompasses people, policies, resources and technologies that provide and support directions in producing, collecting, using, and preserving research data. RDMs consist of a wide range of activities, including supporting the creation of data management plans (DMPs), building data collections and repositories, and digital preservation and distribution. In advanced countries, systems for RDMs and related organizations are well organized and functioning, but in Korea, the management system is insufficient due to low level of data awareness. In this paper, we propose a plan to establish a research data management system suitable for the reality. In particular, it is important to reflect in RDM that the construction of big data platforms for the collection and management of big data in each field and organization is increasing rapidly. Also, we will discuss how to provide data provision and researchers' data sovereignty using blockchain technology, and propose a P2P-based decentralized RDM scheme.

  • This study examined the current practices of Research Data Management (RDM) services recently built and implemented at research university libraries in the U.S. by analyzing the components of the services and the contents presented in their web sites. The study then analyzed the content of web pages describing the services provided by 31 Research Universities/Very High research activity determined based on the Carnegie Classification. The analysis was based on 9 components of the services suggested by previous studies, including (1) DMP support; (2) File organization; (3) Data description; (4) Data storage; (5) Data sharing and access; (6) Data preservation; (7) Data citation; (8) Data management training; (9) Intellectual property of data. As a result, the vast majority of the universities offered the service of DMP support. More than half of the universities provided the services for describing and preserving data, as well as data management training. Specifically, RDM services focused on offering the guidance to disciplinary metadata and repositories of relevance, or training via individual consulting services. More research and discussion is necessary to better understand an intra- or inter-institutional collaboration for implementing the services and knowledge and competency of librarians in charge of the services.
