Tidal circulation in a closed bay using a variation of bottom roughness was investigated through the numerical experiments based on a finite difference multi-level model. Various distributions of bottom roughness in the bay were implemented to determine their effects. It hadbeen determined that residual currents can be generated from the differences of the bottom roughness between streaming and reverse flow directions. The magnitude of residual currents and volume flow rate increase when the relative ratio of bottom roughness between streaming and reverse flow directions increase. Circulation in the closed bay is also improved by the employment of the change of bottom roughness.

The distribution of tidal current and tidal induced residual current, topographical eddies and tidal residual circulation in the waters surrounding the Geumo Island-An Island channel were identified through numerical model experiments and vorticity balance analysis. Tidal current flows southwest at flood and northeast at ebb along the channel. The maximum flow velocity was about 100-150 cm/s in neap and spring tide. During the flood current in the neap tide, clockwise small eddies were formed in the waters west of Sobu Island and southwest of Daebu Island, and a more grown eddy was formed in the southern waters of Geumo Island in the spring tide. A small eddy that existed in the western waters of Chosam Island during the ebb in neap tide appeared to be a more grown topographical eddy in the northeastern waters of Chosam Island in spring tide. Tidal ellipses were generally reciprocating and were almost straight in the channel. These topographical eddies are made of vorticity caused by coastal friction when tidal flow passes through the channel. They gradually grow in size as they are transported and accumulated at the end of the channel. When the current becomes stronger, the topographic eddies move, settle, spread to the outer sea and grow as a counterclockwise or clockwise tidal residual circulation depending on the surrounding terrain. In the waters surrounding the channel, there were counterclockwise small tidal residual circulations in the central part of the channel, clockwise from the northeast end of the channel to northwest inner bay of An Island, and clockwise and counterclockwise between Daebu Island and An Island. The circulation flow rate was up to 20-30 cm/s. In the future, it is necessary to conduct an experimental study to understand the growth process of the tidal residual circulation in more detail due to the convergence and divergence of seawater around the channel.
In order to clarify the seasonal variation of the residual current and the material transportation process in Hiroshima Bay, JAPAN, the real-time simulation of residual current and particle tracking by using the Euler-Lagrange model were carried out. The calculated tidal current, water temperature, and salinity showed good agreement with the observed ones. The residual currents showed a southward flow pattern at the upper layer, and a northward flow pattern at the lower layer. The flow structure of the residual current in Hiroshima Bay is an estuarine circulation affected by density flow and wind driven current. The residual current plays an important role of material transportation in the bay.
In the persent study, we conducted numerical experiments using a three-dimensional baroclinic equation model and a Lagrangian method for clarifying the hydrodynamics in Osaka Bay under the yearly mean discharge and visualizing the behaviour of particles of different settling velocity discharged from Yodo River and sedimentation pattern on the sea bottom. Particles are transported from the Yodo River to the south direction by the residual circulation of the bay head at the first stage, and after most of suspended solids particles are settled down at any layer and returned in the south-east coastal area through bottom layers by an estuarine circulation. The results show that estuarine circulation plays an important part of suspended solids transportation in the Osaka Bay.

Current measurements at 3 sections and numerical experiments were carried out in Masan Bay to understand the effect of the wind on the residual currents and pollutant transport. The vertical distribution of horizontal velocities were directly affected by the wind at the depths of 1m and 2m beneath the sea surface. Analysis of the velocity data suggested that changes in the vertical gravitational circulation contributed to the net circulation. The net transport of water through the northern part of the bay was observed to be landward, with wind-induced transport of about 100m super(3)/s. Hence, wind is concluded to be the dominant mechanism driving the net circulation in the northern area of Masan Bay. Numerical experiments are shown that when S wind with 5m/s blew, northern area of the bay was generated the horizontal circulation of clockwise and local gyre. On the contrary of those, N wind made her to the anti-clockwise. In the case of no wind, the tidal residual current(constant flow) is very small or neglected except the bay-mouth. The inflow or outflow pattern of the mouth is considered as the flows generated by tidal residual current only. The distance of wind-induced transport of pollutant was as long as 2 times of no wind during the one tidal period.

The purpose of this study of this study is to find tide and tidal current variation by three dimensional numerical model of tide and tidal current in the bay of Cheonsu in Korea. On the basis of the observed data on water temperature and salinity data and wind data of summer(July) in the bay of Cheonsu in Korea, water circulation in the bay of Cheonsu is investigated with use of a robust diagnostic numerical model, including calculated co-range and co-tidal charts of M2 tide are similar to the observed ones. The residual flow Pattern at the surface layer during summer formed clockwise circulation in the front coastal the dike of the Sosam A zone(Ganwor island) and Taeju island. The residual flow pattern at the 15m layer during formed clockwise circulation in the front Taeju island. The residual flow Pattern at the surface layer formed anti-clockwise circulation in the upper Sangmok and Naepasu island.
In the passive residual heat removal system of a molten salt reactor, one of the residual heat removal methods is to use the thimble-type heat transfer elements of the drain salt tank to remove the residual heat of fuel salts. An experimental loop is designed and built with a single heat transfer element to analyze the heat transfer and flow characteristics. In this research, the influence of the size of a three-layer thimble-type heat transfer element on the heat transfer rate is analyzed. Two methods are used to obtain the heat transfer rate, and a difference of results between methods is approximately 5%. The gas gap width between the thimble and the bayonet has a large effect on the heat transfer rate. As the gas gap width increases from 1.0 mm to 11.0 mm, the heat transfer rate decreases from 5.2 kW to 1.6 kW. In addition, a natural circulation startup process is described in this paper. Finally, flashing natural circulation instability has been observed in this thimble-type heat transfer element.
There are many parameters that affect the natural circulation flow, such as height difference, heating power size, pipe diameter, system pressure and inlet temperature and so on. In general analysis the heating power is often regarded as a uniform distribution. The ANSYS-CFX numerical analysis software was used to analyze the flow heat transfer of supercritical water under different heating power distribution conditions. The distribution types of uniform, power increasing, power decreasing and sine function are investigated. Through the analysis, it can be concluded that different power distribution has a great influence on the flow of natural circulation if the total power of heating is constant. It was found that the peak flow of supercritical water natural circulation is maximal when the distribution of heating power is monotonically decreasing, minimal when it is monotonically increasing, and moderate at uniform or the sine type of heating. The simulation results further reveal the supercritical water under different heat transfer conditions on its flow characteristics. It can provide certain theory reference and system design for passive residual heat removal system about supercritical water.

The effect of wind on the circulation in Kamak Bay in the southern sea of Korea was examined using a numerical shallow water model. The experiments were primarily focused on how the effect of wind influence the tidal residual current. According to wind directions, the residual currents were changed; the westerly wind created a strong anti-clockwise eddy in the northwestern area of the bay where the flow field is usually very weak; the easterly wind strengthened the flow field in the central area of the bay; the patterns of flow fields to the north and south winds were almost the same as one without the wind, although the flow field became slightly stronger, The model flirty reproduced features in the observed current field at Pyongsa.
