  • Electro-Rheological(ER) fluids change their apparent viscosity according to the electric field strength. The electrical and rheological properties of zeolite based the ER fluids were reported. The electric field dependent yield stress are obtained from experimental investigation on the Bingham property of the ER fluid. Using ER fluids, it is possible to directly interface between electric drop and flow rate of the ER fluid was hydraulic control valve measured under application of an electric field. The purpose of the present study is pressure drop measurement of an ER valve by using strain gage. The performance characteristics of the valve system are evalusted in terms of pressrue fixed with respect to the intensity of employed electric fields and flow rates. As a result, it is esperimentally confirmed that pressure control valve using ER fluids applicable to use in hydraulic power systems.

  • In this study, rheological properties of kaolinite and three different porcelain fluid muds are quantitatively estimated with the latest rheometer, in which variations of their viscosities and yield stresses with their densities are estimated. This study also involves the measurements for the basic physico-chemical properties of fluid muds and the qualitative analysis of their correlation between physico-chemical and rheological properties. Experimental results of rheological tests show that fluid muds in general belong to Pseudo-plastic fluids and both viscosities and yield stresses of them increase exponentially with the increase of density while they are remarkably different in quantity depending on sediments.

  • Different amounts of zinc stearate were incorporated as a plasticizer into poly(styrene-co-sodium methacrylate) ionomers prepared by bulk-suspension plymerization and neutralization with sodium hydroxide and effects of the zinc stearate on the thermal and rheological properties were investigated. It was obseved that the crystallization of zinc stearate in the ionomers were partially suppressed depending on the content of ionic moieties. It is postulated that the ionic moieties dissolved zinc stearate and suppressed crystallization of the zinc stearates. We speculated that 0.4~0.6 mole of zinc stearate was dissolved by one mole of the ionic moiety. Poly(styrene-co-sodium methacrylate) containing only the dissolved zinc stearates showed typical rheological properties of homogeneous systems in Cox-Mertz plots. However, poly(styrene-co-sodium methacrylate) containing crystallizable zinc stearates as well as dissolved ones showed typical rheological properties of heterogeneous systems.

  • Surface defects in injection molded parts are due to the unsteady flow of polymer melt which are related to the geometries of cavity and gate, the operational conditions of injection and the rheological properties of polymer. In this study we have examined jetting phenomena in injection molding process for three kinds of PCs which have different molecular weight and structure, PBT and PC/ABS alloy with several injection speeds. We have used various cavity shapes that are tensile, flexural and impact test specimens with various gate and cavity thicknesses. Through this study we have observed that the formation of surface defect associated with jetting during filling stage in injection molding is strongly related to die swell. This means that the jetting is strongly affected by the elastic property rather than the viscous property in viscoelastic characteristics of molten polymer. Large die swell would eliminate jetting however, the retardation of die swell would stimulate jetting. In the point of mold design, reducing the thickness ratio of cavity to gate can reduce or eliminate jetting and associated surface defects regardless of magnitude of elastic property. It also enlarges process window that can produce steady flow of polymer melt in injection molding.

  • This paper presents the temperature-dependent hysteresis identification of an electro-rheological (ER) fluid under various operating temperatures using the Preisach model. As a first step, polymethylaniline (PMA) particles are prepared and mixed with silicone oil to make an ER fluid. A couette type electroviscometer is then employed to obtain the field-dependent shear stress. In order to show the suitability of the Preisach model to predict a physical hysteresis phenomenon of the ER fluid, two significant properties; the minor loop property and the wiping-out property are experimentally examined under three dominant temperature conditions. Subsequently, the Preisach model fur the PMA-based ER fluid is identified using experimental first order descending (FOD) curves. The effectiveness of the identified hysteresis model is verified in the time domain by comparing the predicted field-dependent shear stress with the measured one under the both specified and unspecified temperatures. In addition, the hysteresis model proposed in this work is compared to Bingham model.

  • In this study we prepared 5 types of nutritional beverage base samples containing various ratios of soy protein isolate (SPI) and sodium caseinate as protein source. The rheological properties of each sample were measured and the results were as followes; Samples changed their rheological properties with the ratio of SPI. Samples represented newtonian property with low ratio of SPI, pseudoplastic property with the increment of SPI, and bingham pseudoplastic property with higher increment of SPI (80% as protein source). In this result we conjectured that the more was the SPI, the more was the formation of progel during heat treatment, which could be the reason of the rheological changes. In the test of the relationship between temperature and apparent viscosity, apparent viscosity of samples decreased along with the increment of temperature. In observing the relationship between time and apparent viscosity, we found sample, containing high ratio of SPI (80%), represented thixotropic property clearly with the hysteresis loop.

  • The rheological property of hollow PANI malonate suspension in silicone oil was investigated by varying the electric fields and shear rates, respectively. The hollow PANI malonate susepnsion showed a typical electrorheological (ER) response caused by the polarizability of an amide polar group and shear yield stress due to the formation of chains upon application of an electric field. The shear stress for the hollow PANI malonate suspension exhibited an electric field power of 0.90. On the basis of the experimental results, the newly synthesized hollow PANI malonate suspension was found to be an anhydrous ER fluid.

  • In this study, friction characteristics using elastomeric actuator with Magneto-rheological (MR) materials are identified. Typically, Magneto-rheological materials are divided into two groups by MR fluid in fluid state and MR elastomer in solid state like rubber. The stiffness characteristics of Magneto-rheological material can be changed as magnetic field is applied. MR fluid has been applied to various industry fields such as to brake, clutch, damper, engine mount and etc. However, MR fluid has been used under the sealed condition to prevent leaking issues. In order to overcome these problems, MR elastomer that has same property as MR fluid has been developed and studied. MR elastomer mainly consists of polymer material such as natural rubber or silicon rubber with particles that can be polarized with magnetic field. And it is called as a smart material since its stiffness and damping characteristics can be changed. In this study, MR elastomer is produced and pin-on-disc tests are carried out to identify the friction characteristics of the material. Several test conditions are applied to evaluate the feasibility to use as a smart actuator in the field of vibration control.

  • Rheological properties of cement paste containing ultrafine blastfurnace slag (UBS, $9600cm^2/g$) were investigated by mini-slump test, pH meter, conduction calorimeter and coaxial cylinder viscometer. In order to improve rheological properties of the cement paste, granulated blastfurnace slag (GBS, $3500cm^2/g$) and polycarboxylate type superplasticizer (PC) were also used in this experiment. The fluidity of cement paste containing UBS was decreased. The yield stress and plastic viscosity of cement paste was increased with increasing UBS. But the rheological properties were improved when GBS and PC were added to UBS blended cement paste. In the relationship between the yield stress and the plastic viscosity or the mini-slump value, the yield stress of the cement paste was proportional to the plastic viscosity of it. However the cement paste mini-slump value was in inverse proportional to the yield stress.
