In this research a qualitative method was employed, and research-related data were collected and analyzed through in-depth interviews. Results were shown that risk reduction behaviors at psychological risk perception on purchase activity itself included rationalization of purchase, accompanied purchase, reduction and discontinuance of purchase, and that risk reduction behaviors of psychological risk perception on the post-purchase situation included information search, establishment of selection criteria, establishment of marginal limit, selective purchase, planned and compared purchase, and reduction and discontinuance of purchase. Previous researches suggested brand loyalty, selection of famous brands, utilization of information agents by marketers, pre-purchase usage and guaranteed purchase, but these risk reduction methods were not utilized, this probably being interpreted as a result of characteristics of counterfeit. In addition, risk reduction behavior of one type tended to reduce risk perception of several other types, and risk reduction behaviors of various types were utilized to reduce a certain type's risk perception. Not only types of risk perception but also levels of risk perception appeared to have exerted influence to risk reduction behaviors.

Data were gathered through survey with 429 housewives in Seoul and metropolitan area, and then statistically analyzed by descriptive statistics, factor analysis, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Duncan's test, and Pearson's correlation analysis. The results showed partially significant differences in risk perception, especially economic risk and social psychological risks, among housewife consumer groups according to the clothing buying behavior and the demographic characteristics. There were significant differences in risk reduction behaviors among the groups, especially brand preference/industry information, observation/experience, and media information. Also, correlations between risk perception and risk reduction behaviors were found. The social psychological risk perception was highly correlated to the risk reduction behaviors, while the time/convenience loss risk was not correlated to any risk reduction behavior. The results of this study provide insight into children's wear business through suggesting marketing implication.

It also investigated the relationship between risk perception and risk reduction behavior as well as the ways in which groups, categorized by risk perception, differed in their risk reduction behaviors. The results of this study were as follows: first, seven factors of risk perception were identified. These were product quality, shipping, product image, payment, economic feasibility, fear of other people's reactions, and size. Six types of risk reduction behavior were also identified. These were product comparison, word-of-mouth information search, price search, preference for name-brand, service comparison, and referring to experiences. Next, a correlational analysis of the factors of risk perception and those of risk reduction behavior showed several patterns. The highest positive correlation was between economic risk perception and product comparison behavior. In addition, shipping risk perception was positively correlated with service comparison behavior and product quality and product image had a positive correlation with word-of-mouth information search behavior. Third, customers of internet shopping malls could be categorized into three groups: shipping risk perception group, high risk perception group, and product quality risk perception group. The groups were shown by factor analysis to be significantly different to each other. Finally, risk reduction behavior was investigated according to the different groups of risk perception of the internet shopping malls and the results showed significant differences among groups.

  • This paper examined risk reduction methods utilized by consumers in apparel buying situation in multidimensional conceptual framework, and analyzed the relationships between risk types, consumer demographic variables and preferences of risk reduction methods. Samples of 224 consumers were deliberately selected to include various demographic characteristics such as sex, age, educational level, occupation, income level. The results of the principal axis factor analysis indicated that 26 item risk reduction methods could be summarized into 6 meaningful factors; Marketer-dominated Information Sources Use (MIS), Prepurchase Deliberation / Observation i Dependence on Past Buying Experience (DOE), Independent Information Sources Use (lIS), Interpersonal Information Sources Use (PIS), Brand Loyalty (BL), Label Reading / Guarantee Buying (RG). DOE were used most whereas IIS used least. Correlations of various types of risk perceived with the preference of risk reduction methods were significant especially for positive relationship between psychologi-cal and/or economic risk and DOE, and between social risk and/or fashionability loss and MIS. Results of ANOVA and Duncan test suggested that sex, age, educational level, occupation of consumers can act as ones of determinant variables on making differences in the use of risk reduction methods.

  • Consumers' perception of risk plays a major role in how they make online purchase decisions. Since online shopping is perceived to be riskier than in-store shopping, consumers engage in a variety of risk reduction strategies such as searching online for alternative products and alternative e-tailers. This study examines the influence of risk involvement on risk reduction strategies and customer satisfaction. It discusses three aspects of risk reduction strategies: time spent in making a purchasing decision, searching for alternative e-tailers, and searching for alternative products. Data from 294 female shoppers who had experience in purchasing fashion products online was analyzed. This study found that risk involvement had a positive influence on the time spent in making decisions, while the influence of risk involvement on searching for alternative retailers and alternative products was not significant. However, consumer satisfaction was negatively related to search for alternative retailers and positively related to risk involvement. This study provides a better understanding of customers' risk involvement and risk reduction strategies in online shopping. This information would be beneficial for marketers and retailers to reduce customer perception of risks and to promote online sales.

  • This study investigates the influences of shopping enjoyment and risk reduction on customers' attitude and the behavioral intention in the Internet shopping mall using a moving virtual model. For this study, we produced a moving virtual model to present a fashion product. The virtual model walks for about one minute on the stage. After respondents viewed it, they completed a questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of online shopping enjoyment, risk reduction, customers' attitude and behavioral intention. Respondents are limited to females aged in their 20s and 30s, who have experienced Internet shopping and are highly interested in fashion products. 411 samples were used for the final analysis. Cronbach's alpha, factor analysis, and multiple regression analysis were conducted. The results are as follows. Online shopping enjoyment and risk reduction influenced the behavioral intention directly as well as through the attitude. However, the size of the influence indicated that online shopping enjoyment is larger than risk reduction. Therefore, Internet malls should utilize the moving virtual model to provide customers with enjoyment and risk reduction, which will increase customers' favorable attitudes and the behavioral intention such as purchase intention and word of mouth.
