Automotive Active Suspension Design Using LQG/LTR Method (LQG/LTR 설계방법을 이용한 자동차 현가장치 능동제어)

  • An automotive suspension system generally behaves like a low frequency band-pass filter(0.5 - 10 Hz). Passengers are very sensitive to this frequency range in terms of ride quality and road holding ability. In this paper, a LQG/ LTR controller is suggested to improve the ride quality and road holding ability in the specified frequency rage. It has been found by numerical simulation that the ride quality and road holding ability can be improved in the frequency ranges of 0.5 - 3.0 Hz and 0.3 - 2.1 Hz respectively. In addition, a new approach using root locus to evaluate the stability robustness of the active suspension system is studied. It is shown that the stability robustness of the LQG/LTR controller designed in this paper is improved, compared to the passive system.

  • A two-degree-of-freedom quarter-car model is used as the basis for LQ and the proposed controller design for a semi-active suspension. The LQ controller results in the best rms performance trade-offs(as defined by performance index) between ride, handling and packaging requirements. In LQ controller, however, the conflict between road holding and ride comfort remains. The adaptive semi-active suspension control based on the road frequency are introduced in this paper. With this method, the trade-off between road holding and ride comfort can be relaxed. The road frequency is estimated by wavelet transform if rattle space signal. The simulation results show that the proposed controller is superior to the conventional LQ controller.

Optimal Design of Shock Absorber using High Speed Stability (고속 안정성을 고려한 쇽업소버 최적 설계)

  • In order to solve the conflict problem between the ride comfort and the road holding, the optimal design of shock absorber that minimizes the r.m.s. of sprung mass vertical acceleration and pitch rate with the understeer characteristics constraints in the high speed stability is proposed. The design of experiments and the nonlinear optimization algorithm are used together to obtain the optimal design of shock absorber. The second order regression models of the input variables(front and rear damping coefficients) and the output variables (ride comfort index and road holding one) are obtained by the central composite design in the design of experiments. Then the optimal design of shock absorber can be systematically adjusted with applying the nonlinear optimization algorithm to the obtained second order regression model. The frequency response analysis of sprung mass acceleration and pitch rate shows the effectiveness of the proposed optimal design of shock absorber in the sprung mass resonance range with the understeer characteristics constraints.

Performance analysis of vehicle suspension systems with negative stiffness

  • This work evaluates the influence of negative stiffness on the performances of various vehicle suspension systems, and proposes a re-centering negative stiffness device (NSD). The re-centering NSD consists of a passive magnetic negative stiffness spring and a positioning shaft with a re-centering function. The former produces negative stiffness control forces, and the latter prevents the amplification of static spring deflection. The numerical simulations reveal that negative stiffness can improve the ride comfort of a vehicle without affecting its road holding abilities for either passive or semi-active suspension systems. In general, the improvement degree of ride comfort increases as negative stiffness increases. For passive suspension system, negative stiffness brings in negative stiffness feature in the control forces, which is helpful for the ride comfort of a vehicle. For semi-active suspensions, negative stiffness can alleviate the impact of clipped damping in semi-active dampers, and thus the ride comfort of a vehicle can be improved.

  • Localized rainfall due to abnormal climate has caused extensive damages killing several tens to hundreds of people for yearly basis. The typhoon 'Lusa' of year 2002 has resulted 5,400 billion won of property damage and the damages for roads were approximated to be 2,860 billion won at 12,377 locations holding 53% damage of total. The recent typhoon, 'Aewinia' of yeat 2006 caused the 1,400 billion-won property damage including sweeping and flooding of 127 roads and 65 rivers, respectively. There are needs to minimize the damages for important structures for repeated heavy rainfalls every year and, especially, because debris flow might be a main cause of road damage, the design criteria and guideline for roads are required to be improved. Therefore, this paper presented design method of debris-flow control structure for road protection.

A Robust $H^{\infty}$ Controller for Active Suspensions Based on a Full-Car Model (차량의 능동형 현가장치를 위한 강인한 $H^{\infty}$ 제어기 설계)

  • An $H\infty$ controller is designed for active suspensions of vehicles using 7-degree-of-freedom full-car model. Its performance robustness as well as stability robustness to system parameter variations and unmodelled dynamics are assured through the $\mu$-framework. The performance of the $H\infty$ controller is compared with that of a LQC controller in compute simulations. From the simulations it is found that the active suspension with the $H\infty$ controller reduces the acceleration and motion of the sprung mass in the heaving rolling and pitching directions when the car is driven on a normal road or through an asymmetric bump. The suspension stroke and the road holding capability are also improved with a relatively small level of power consumption. Overall the $H\infty$ controller shows a more robust performance than that of the LQG design.

Effect of Inadequate Design on Cost and Time Overrun of Road Construction Projects in Tanzania

  • Completing road construction projects within the budget and time has been a problem for the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS); and the major problem highlighted in almost all projects being inadequate design. However, the extent to which inadequate design contributes to both time and cost overruns and its causes remained under-studied. The objective of this study is therefore to determine the extent of the effect of inadequate design, its causes and remedial measures. The methodology used in this study includes reviewing recent projects completion reports, holding roundtable discussions with consultants and TANROADS officials and analyzing the information. Cost and time overruns for the reviewed projects averaged 44% and 26% respectively. Similarly, the extents to which inadequate design contributes to cost and time overruns were on average found to be 61% and 85% respectively. The overruns are predominantly related to problems that occurred during the design process. To alleviate the problem, TANROADS is advised to improve the management of design projects, enhance the process of reviewing design reports, improve the design process including introducing Road Safety Audit and geometric design manuals, and increase staff to match the work-load.

  • This study analyzed the placement and interactivity of the immersive performance . In the sense of place, it was analyzed that first, walked and followed the living spaces and streets of the victims of the Sewol ferry, and second, through this, the participants induce a transfer experience to become the main character of the performance. In terms of interactivity, participants were able to carry out various forms of participation, and as a result, they analyzed that they had relieved debt consciousness or exerted healing effects. In addition, it was confirmed that they pursued solidarity and sympathy by focusing more on the city 'Ansan' rather than the story of the Sewol ferry. Through these results, it can be seen that has many social functions, a variety of art forms, and is differentiated from other immersive performances. So, it is necessary to consider the continuous holding.

GA-BASED PID AND FUZZY LOGIC CONTROL FOR ACTIVE VEHICLE SUSPENSION SYSTEM

  • Since the nonlinearity and uncertainties which inherently exist in vehicle system need to be considered in active suspension control law design, this paper proposes a new control strategy for active vehicle suspension systems by using a combined control scheme, i.e., respectively using a genetic algorithm (GA) based self-tuning PID controller and a fuzzy logic controller in two loops. In the control scheme, the PID controller is used to minimize vehicle body vertical acceleration, the fuzzy logic controller is to minimize pitch acceleration and meanwhile to attenuate vehicle body vertical acceleration further by tuning weighting factors. In order to improve the adaptability to the changes of plant parameters, based on the defined objectives, a genetic algorithm is introduced to tune the parameters of PID controller, the scaling factors, the gain values and the membership functions of fuzzy logic controller on-line. Taking a four degree-of-freedom nonlinear vehicle model as example, the proposed control scheme is applied and the simulations are carried out in different road disturbance input conditions. Simulation results show that the present control scheme is very effective in reducing peak values of vehicle body accelerations, especially within the most sensitive frequency range of human response, and in attenuating the excessive dynamic tire load to enhance road holding performance. The stability and adaptability are also showed even when the system is subject to severe road conditions, such as a pothole, an obstacle or a step input. Compared with conventional passive suspensions and the active vehicle suspension systems by using, e.g., linear fuzzy logic control, the combined PID and fuzzy control without parameters self-tuning, the new proposed control system with GA-based self-learning ability can improve vehicle ride comfort performance significantly and offer better system robustness.
