This result implied that the conducting mortgage with land could be very effective for enhancing economic well-being of rural elderly households. Second, in the case of conducting mortgage using only shelters in rural area, the average substitute rate of current consumption was found to be only 25.7% (LTV=100%). • Cities of China have been expanding rapidly during the last 10 years and the living environment of urban population developed highly making little difference with the developed nations. However, in the case of rural area, situation is totally different from the urban area. There are some cases where the quality of life in rural areas is retreating compared to the past. Agrarian cultures of the past are remained in the rural area with only older generations and no younger generations. The difference between the rural and the urban and the movement to the cities are increasing in a rapid speed. This led to the recognition of potential danger that lies on the agricultural societies which can demolish the economic development's sustainability. Therefore, in this study, basic information about the current Chinese elderly's house circumstances and to build new houses suited for the older generations will be provided. This can not only enhance the quality of the elder citizen's life, but also can be a meaningful research for the ideal construction of future Chinese agriculture.

  • Research outcome shows the following: 1. Estimation by the year 2015 on the number of the aged people and on the number of the household of living alone and living with spouse only, per age-cohort by 5 years, per basic self-govern-ins local groups and the city of Daegu. The result is supposed to serve as meaningful basic material in building up future policies in many areas for the aged people living in their homes. 2. Estimation varies according to the areas and the age-cohorts. In urban areas, increase of the numbers of the households of the aged people living alone and living with spouse only is estimated in every age-cohort. In rural areas, variance between two age-groups, old-old and young-old, is observed. Both of the numbers of the households for the aged living alone and the aged living with spouse only have increased continuously by the year 2005. But the hither-to increase tendency is estimated to reverse itself to a decrease starting from the younger within the young-old age group, and the ratio of the old-old age-group in rural population will sharply increase starting from the year 2005. Such increase in the number of the aged people in need of the housing and the social support requires the increasing policy consideration for the issue of housing for the aged living in their homes. In spite of the decreasing tendency in the number of the aged people living alone and living with spouse only in rural areas, still there will continue to be more number of such households than in urban area for the time being. The government of Gyeongsangbuk-Do should pay more consideration to the old-old aged living alone and living with spouse only in rural areas, while being prepared for the sharply increasing households for the aged living alone and living with spouse only in urban areas.

The evaluation tests of rural toilet consist of composting efficiency, component analysis of odor, and economic efficiency. The test showed that the remaining quantity of wastes was only 14.7% during 10 months. The ammonium gas, main component of ill odor, was not measured, and the other components or odor were significantly detected less than those in pit toilet. The saved PVC (Present Value Cost) of the toilet management cost for thirty years is about 2,457,000 wons compared with flushing toilet supported by a single sanitation facility.
