  • Fractal property of the passivated steel surface was investigated on the basis of scaling analysis with a special focus on its relationship with corrosion resistance. For this purpose, the surface of stainless steel was intentionally oxidized under a variety of passivation conditions and its scaling property was analyzed by a triangulation method. The morphology of the passivated steel surface was satisfactorily evaluated with fractal dimension. From the chronoamperometry and impedance measurement, it proved that lower fractal dimension leads to more enhanced corrosion resistance. The higher passivity of the steel surface with lower fractal dimension was discussed in terms of active area and structural imperfection.

  • Rational scaling of design earthquake ground motions for tall buildings is essential for safer, risk-based design of tall buildings. This paper provides the structural designers with an insight for more rational scaling based on drift and input energy demands. Since a resonant sinusoidal motion can be an approximate critical excitation to elastic and inelastic structures under the constraint of acceleration or velocity power, a resonant sinusoidal motion with variable period and duration is used as an input wave of the near-field and far-field ground motions. This enables one to understand clearly the relation of the intensity normalization index of ground motion (maximum acceleration, maximum velocity, acceleration power, velocity power) with the response performance (peak interstory drift, total input energy). It is proved that, when the maximum ground velocity is adopted as the normalization index, the maximum interstory drift exhibits a stable property irrespective of the number of stories. It is further shown that, when the velocity power is adopted as the normalization index, the total input energy exhibits a stable property irrespective of the number of stories. It is finally concluded that the former property on peak drift can hold for the practical design response spectrum-compatible ground motions.

  • In this study, rainfall quantile was estimated using scale invariance property of rainfall data with different durations and the applicability of such property was evaluated for the rainfall data of South Korea. For this purpose, maximum annual rainfall at 22 recording sites of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) having relatively long records were used to compare rainfall quantiles between at-site frequency analysis and scale invariance property. As the results, the absolute relative errors of rainfall quantiles between two methods show at most 10 % for hourly rainfall data. The estimated quantiles by scale invariance property can be generally applied in the 8 of 14 return periods used in this study. As an example of down-scaling method, rainfall quantiles of $10{\sim}50$ minutes duration were estimated by scale invariance property based on index duration of 1 hour. These results show less than 10 % of absolute relative errors except 10 minutes duration. It is found that scale invariance property can be applied to estimate rainfall quantile for unmeasured rainfall durations.

  • Air permeabilities in unsaturated fractured tuff at the Apache Leap Research Site (ALRS) near Superior, Arizona, exhibit a self-affine behavior, thus renders a field random fractal. Based up fractal scaling, the observed scale effect has been interpreted [Hyun et al., 2002]. Recently, Frantziskonis and Hansen [2000] presented that fractal scaling can be represented based on wavelets. This study deals with the way of using wavelets for fractal scaling. A numerical study is presented to examine the applicability of wavelet-based approach to determining upscaled air permeability values on various data supports at the site. To characterize the scaling property of self-affine fields generated based upon wavelets, Hurst coefficient, H. was inferred by applying the average wavelet coefficient (AWC) method. The result yielded H = 0.24, which is very close to the result of geostatistical analysis using a power variogram (H = 0.22). The study concludes that wavelet-based scaling is a useful way of determining parameter values on different data supports, which is an essential task for modeling of subsurface flow and mass transport in a numeric grid with different resolutions (grid size).

  • Graphite spheroidization and scaling resistance of cast iron containing 5-10% Al were investigated. It is impossible to obtain spheroidal graphite in cast iron containing Al with 8 % and over, but possible to obtain spheroidal graphite even in cast iron with an Al content of about 10 % by increasing Si content. In the scaling test carried out under the heating condition of $950^{\circ}C$ in air for total of 50 hours, the scaling resistance of cast iron containing Al with 8 % and over was remarkably superior, and also spheroidal graphite cast iron was superior to flake graphite cast iron. The scale became thinner more compacts and more protective with increasing Al content.

  • In a development of efficient primal-dual interior-points algorithms for self-scaled convex programming problems, one of the important properties of such cones is the existence and uniqueness of "scaling points". In this paper through the identification of scaling points with the notion of "(metric) geometric means" on symmetric cones, we extend several well-known matrix inequalities (the classical L$\ddot{o}$wner-Heinz inequality, Ando inequality, Jensen inequality, Furuta inequality) to symmetric cones. We also develop a theory of spectral geometric means on symmetric cones which has recently appeared in matrix theory and in the linear monotone complementarity problem for domains associated to symmetric cones. We derive Nesterov-Todd inequality using the spectral property of spectral geometric means on symmetric cones.

  • The earthquakes are the natural disasters that can cause the most serious damage to civil structures. Therefore, various studies are being conducted to secure the safety of structures against earthquakes. Most studies on the safety or mechanism of civil structures during earthquakes are being conducted based on lab scale test, because real structure tests are impossible when considering the scale of civil structures. The scaling factor proposed by Iai is mainly cited, but when applying the scaling factor proposed by Iai, there are many difficulties in selecting the structural members necessary for the production of the lab scale model. This is because when applying the scaling factor proposed by Iai, the scaling factor must be applied to the elastic modulus, which is the material property of the structure. Therefore, a new method based on Iai's 's similarity law for determining scale factor is applied in this study where the material property of real structure is same as that of lab-scale model. Through the results of this study, it is considered that the characteristics of the structure calculated through the lab scale model test can more accurately reflect the characteristics of the real structure.
