  • The objectives of the paper are to apply the gross erosion and sediment delivery ratio method for estimating sediment deposits and to define their trap efficiencies. For twenty irrigation reservoirs which have sediment survey data, the gross erosion was estimated from the channel erosion as well as the soil losses by applying USLE. The gross erowion was reduced to the sediment yields by multiplying the sediment delivery ratios. The results were multipled by trap efficiencies after Brune method to estimate sediment deposits, which were compared to sediment surveyed data. The comparisons showed deposits. And a trap efficiency relationship was derived from a regression method, which appeared better suited for irrigation reservoirs.

  • Various Best Management Practices (BMPs) have been suggested to reduce Nonpoint source pollutant loads from agricultural fields. However, very little research regarding water quality improvement with sediment trap has been performed in Korea. Thus, effects of sediment trap were investigated in this study. Three sediment traps were installed at the edge of six plots and flow and water quality of inflow and outflow were monitored and analyzed. It was found that approximately 64.1 % of flow reduction was observed. In addition, pollutant concentration of outflow was reduced by 39.0 % for $BOD_5$. For SS, $COD_{Mn}$, DOC, T-N, T-P, approximately 62.1 %, 43.4 %, 43.5 %, 40.0 %, and 41.2 % reduction were observed, respectively. Over 80 % and 90 % of pollutant loads were reduced from sediment trap #2 and #3 because of less outflow from plots covered with rice straw/straw mat. In case of intensive rainfall events occurred from July 26~29, 2011, over 60 % of pollutant and 88.9 % of sediment reduction were observed from sediment trap #3. As shown in this study, small sediment traps could play important roles in reducing pollutant loads from agricultural fields. If proper management practices, such as rice straw/straw mat, are used to protect surface from rainfall impacts and rill formation, much pollutant reduction could be expected.

  • This study examines the existing theories related to detention basin and embodies the calculation process of sediment basin. It investigated the scale of sediment basin by actual measurement at Buju Mountain, Mokpo city which causes the environmental problems like erosion and outflow of sediment due to the excessive development, finds the problems of existing sediment basin by applying and analyzing the physical factors which affect the execution of sediment basin using GIS as the method establishing the scale of sediment basin embodied in this study and then suggests the oteimum scale. Comparing the surface area of the existing sediment basin and of the required one, all of the surface areas of the existing sediment basins were smaller than those of the required one. Therefore, it can be expected that the trap efficient of sediment will be declined. The required one. Therefore, it can be expected that the trap efficient of sediment will be declined. The required minimum depth was fully satisfied, but it is analyzed that the volume of sediment basin will affect the neighboring environment because it can not accomodate the inflow discharge volume except sediment basin C. It is consistent with the actual situation which causes a serious environmental problem due to the overflow of sediment basin during the heavy storm event except sediment basin C and also it verifies the validity of calculation process of establishing optimum sediment basin suggested in this study.

  • The objectives of this paper were to apply the gross erosion and sediment delivery ration method for estimating sediment deposits at selected reservoirs of various sizes, and to define their trap efficiencies. Twenty reservoirs that have sediment survey data were selected and the annual average soil losses from subareas within each watershed were estimated using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE). The gross erosion was defined fro the soil losses and estimated channel erosion. By applying the sediment delivery ratios that were defined from an empirical relationship with watershed areas, net incoming sediment yields at reservoirs were defined. Trap efficiencies were applied, sediment deposits estimated, and compared to the surveyed data. The results were in general agreement with the data. Trap efficiencies were also defined from the ratios of sediment deposits to incoming sediment yields. They were within 20% differences from Brune curve, which indicates that Brune curve may be applied for irrigation reservoirs. And an empirical relationship was proposed, that appeared more reliable for estimating trap efficiencies for typical irrigation reservoirs.

  • Three sediment traps were placed at the toe of sloping fields in the alpine belt of Korea and sediment removal efficiency was estimated. Soil texture of the site was sandy soil and 5 runoff and sediment events were observed during 2002. Sediment was largely affected by both the amount and intensity of rainfall. Especially, rainfall intensity seemed to have profound effect on sediment yield from sloping sandy fields. Sediment removal of the sediments ranged widely from 266 kg/ha to 16,974 kg/ha depending on tillage method, slope and slope length, and amount and intensity of rainfall. Sediment removal efficiency was estimated to be more than 98.8%. It was suggested that rational combination of sediment trap and drainage channel might well contribute to control sediment discharge from alpine sloping fields.

  • BACKGROUND: An intensive farming system may be of the most important source for agricultural non-point source (NPS) pollution, which is a major concern for agricultural water management in South Korea. Various management practices have therefore been applied to reduce NPS loads from upland fields. This study presents performances of sediment trap for reducing NPS and soil loss from rainfall runoff in cropland. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 2018 and 2019, three sediment traps (L1.5 m × W1.0 m × D0.5 m = 0.75 ㎥) and their controls were established in the end of sloped (ca. 3%) upland field planted with maize crops. Over the seasons, runoff water was monitored, collected, and analyzed at every runoff. Soils deposited in sediment traps were collected and weighed at the season end. Sediment traps reduced runoff amount (p<0.05) and NPS concentrations, though the decreased NPS concentrations were not always statistically significant. In addition, sediment traps had a significant prevention effect on soil loss from rainfall runoff in a sloped cropland. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the sediment trap could be a powerful and the best management practice to reduce NPS pollution and soil loss in a sloped upland field.

  • This study investigated the effects of NPS(non point source) pollution reduction of sediment traps through field experiments. Various sizes of 4 sediment traps were applied in a upland field located in Gunwi and assessed the infiltration and storage effects as well as NPS pollution reduction effects of this technique. The characteristics of deposited soil in the sediment traps were also analyzed including distribution of particle size, soil texture, and chemical properties. The results showed that slightly different composition of soil particle size from each sediment trap with high proportion of 0.15mm and 0.25mm ranges of soil particle diameters, while the loamy sand is the main types of deposited soils in the sediment traps. Decreased NPS pollution were observed from the water quality analysis of the samples taken from the sediment traps. Further research need to be proceeded continuously to improve this technique in order to utilize on upland fields for management of agricultural NPS pollutions.

  • This study was performed to derive the formula of sediment yield and predict the sediment elevation for fresh desalted reservoirs. Data analyzed was from 3 fresh desalted reservoirs of Sapkyo, Asan, and Namyang. Average sediment yield calculated from the sediment survey data was $279m^3/km^2/$ year for Sapkyo lake, $523m^3/km^2/$ year for Namyang lake, and $190m^3/km^2/$ year for Asan lake. The trap efficiency for Sapkyo lake was 63%. The formula of sediment yield was derived as $Q_s=6,461{\times}A{^-0.44}$ for fresh desalted reservoir. Sediment yield in fresh desalted reservoirs was much higher than that in inland reservoirs located in the same watershed, because of long trap time in fresh desalted reservoirs.

  • Researchers developed Sediment Trap Drain Channel (STDC) as a solution of the reduction of soil erosion and muddy runoff from a alpine field. The STDC is the one that can take a role of grit chamber by installing the shield made of woods in the concrete channel. The study was conducted 8 kinds of stages according to the amount of soil loss and the inflow. Evaluation factors were ss concentration, turbidity and reduced soil. The results of study showed lessness of ss concentration and turbidity from the lower spot than the upper spot. The average reduction rate of ss concentration was 74 % and the average reduction rate of turbidity was 62 %. It was turned out that the performance related soil loss and muddy runoff of the STDC is effective. The governance was needed to expect the effectiveness of the STDC.

  • The Imha watershed is vulnerable to severe erosion due to the topographical characteristics such as mountainous steep slopes. Sediment inflow from upland area has also deteriorated the water quality and caused negative effects on the aquatic ecosystem of the Imha reservoir. The Imha reservoir was affected by sediment-laden density currents during the typhoon 'Maemi' in 2003. The RUSLE model was combined with GIS techniques to analyze the mean annual erosion losses and the soil losses caused by typhoon 'Maemi'. The model is used to evaluate the spatial distribution of soil loss rates under different land uses. The mean annual soil loss rate and soil losses caused by typhoon 'Maemi' were predicted as 3,450 tons/km2/year and 2,920 ton/km2/'Maemi', respectively. The sediment delivery ratio was determined to be about 25% from the mean annual soil loss rate and the surveyed sediment deposits in the Imha reservoir in 1997. The trap efficiency of the Imha reservoir was calculated using the methods of Julien, Brown, Brune, and Churchill and ranges from 96% to 99%.
