  • In order to use Kriging, one has to estimate three parameters(nugget, sill and range) of semivariogram, which shows the relationship in the given two sites. A visual fit of the semivariogram parameters to a few standard models is widely used. But, it does not give the suitable results and not provide the automated process of Kriging. The gradient based nonlinear least squares is another choices to estimate three parameters, but it has some problems such as initial value problem. In this paper, we suggest the genetic algorithm as a compatible alternative method to solve the above mentioned problem. Finally, we estimate three parameters of semivariogram of rain-fall by adapting the genetic algorithm, compute Kriging estimate and conclude its effectiveness and compatibility.

  • The wavelet and semivariogram analysis method are used to identify the city landscape and farmland landscape pattern on the 1m resolution IKONOS images. The results prove that wavelet method is a potential way for landscape pattern analysis. Compared to semivariogram analysis, Wavelet analysis can not only detect the overall spatial pattern, but also find multi-scale and direction structures. In this experiment, the wavelet analysis results indicate: (1) the city landscape image is mainly composed of three level structures whose spatial pattern characters appear at 2m, 16m, 128m and 256m accordingly; (2) the farmland landscape is mainly two scale spatial patterns appearing at the 2m, 128m and 256m. IKONOS Remote sensing, with the high spatial and spectral information, is a powerful tool that can use in many ecological systems research and sustainable management.

  • In order to estimate spatial physicochemical properties of the spring waters in the study area, spring waters at 57 sites were investigated for measuring ten items (temperature, pH, Eh, EC, TDS, DO, salinity, alkalinity, discharge rate, and surface elevation), To compare each component with one another, regression analysis was carried out. Kriging was used to estimate the spatial characteristics and continuity of data in the study area. To solve kriging equation, the semivariogram was calculated using geostatistical software GS$^{+}$(version 3.1). As a result of semivariogram analysis, the data of nine components but surface elevation could be assumed as stationary random function, and ordinary kriging method was used for making contour maps.s.

  • This study was conducted to understand the change of spatial environmental factors including populations, air pollution source and land-use in Busan, during the period of 1995 and 2004. Firstly, the grids (5 km $\times$ 5 km) were divided using the TM coordinates of Busan and the statistical data of populations and land-use were marked on each grid during studying period. Secondly, the SO$_2$, NO$_2$ and O$_3$ concentrations of areas where air quality monitoring station was not established were estimated on the basis of these air pollutants measured at close air quality monitoring station by kriging method. In order to understand spatial change of air pollution and to investigate duplication and reduction of existing stations, semivariogram, correlation and cluster analysis were carried out. This study showed that the population increased in 2004 only on 8 grids compared to in 1995. The spatial change of SO$_2$, NO$_2$ and O$_3$ was investigated by semivariogram in Busan area. As the results of semivariogram, the spatial change of 502 become smaller and simpler, while that of NO2,03 become larger and more complex in 2004 than in 1995, According to the result of correlation and cluster analysis, the reduction of measurement item or the relocation of air quality monitoring station can be needed in the high dense grid area.

  • Spatial distribution of groundwater contaminant concentration has special characteristics such as approximate symmetric profile, for example, in the transversal direction to groundwater flow direction, a certain ratio in directional propagation distances, etc. To obtain a geophysically appropriate semivariogram which is a key factor in estimation of groundwater contaminant concentration at desired locations, these special characteristics should be considered. Specifically, the concepts of symmetry and ratio are considered in this paper. By applying these two concepts, significant improvement of semivariograms, estimation variances, and final estimation results compared with the ones by conventional approaches which usually do not account for symmetry and ratio are shown using field experimental data.

In this paper, a method for finding appropriate symmetric axes is introduced. Statistical analyses for the choices of symmetric axes and mathematical models for semivariograrns are performed. After implementing symmetry, the corresponding semivariograrns, kriging variances, and final estimated results show significant improvement compared with those obtained by conventional approaches which usually do not account for symmetry.

  • A robust estimator for interpolating spatially distributed regionalized variables is introduced. It reduces outlier effects on ob-taining correlation between spatial lags and the correlation between spatial lags and the corresponding semi-variances and produces a significaantly improved semivariogram com-pared with those of conventional estimators. This estimator is applied to a field experimental data set.

  • In this study, methodologies for the rational organization of air pollution monitoring network were examined by understanding the characteristics of temporal and spatial distribution of secondary air pollution, whose significance would increase hereafter. The data on $O_3$ and $NO_2$ concentrations during high ozone period in 1998~1999 recorded at the nine air pollution monitoring station in Busan were analysed using principal component analysis (PCA) and cumulative semivariogram. It was found that the ozone concentration was deeply associated with the daily emission characteristics or the $O_3$ precusors, and nitrogen dioxide concentration largely depends on the emission strength of regional sources. According to the spatial distribution analysis of ozone and nitrogen dioxide in Busan using cumulative semivariograms, the number of monitoring stations for the secondary air pollution can be reduced in east-west direction, but reinforced in north-south direction to explain the spacial variability. More scientific and rational relocation of air pollution monitoring network in Busan would be needed to investigate pollution status accurately and to plan and implement the pollution reduction policies effectively.

  • Image merging techniques have been developed to integrate the advantage of different data type. The objective of this study is to present the optimal method for merging high spatial resolution panchromatic image, such as the latest commercial satellite data, and low spatial resolution mulitspectral images. For this study, a set of 2m resolution panchromatic and 8m resolution mulitspectral data were simulated by using airborne mulitspectral data. Five merging methods of MWD, IHS, PCA, HPF, and CN were applied to produce four bands of high spatial resolution mulitspectral data. Merging results were evaluated by visual interpretation, image statistics, semivariogram, and spectral characteristics. From the aspects of both spatial resolution and spectral information, the wavelet-based MWD merging method have shown very similar results compared with the original data used for the merging.
