  • This study reports the hydrogen sulfide gas sensing properties of ZnO nanorods bundle and the investigation of gas sensing mechanism. Also the improvement of sensing properties was also studied through the application of ZnO heterstructured nanorods. The 1-Dimensional ZnO nano-structure was synthesized by hydrothermal method and ZnO nano-heterostructures were prepared by sonochemical reaction. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra confirmed a well-crystalline ZnO of hexagonal structure. The gas response of ZnO nanorods bundle sensor increased with increasing temperature, which is thought to be due to chemical reaction of nanorods with gas molecules. Through analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the sensing mechanism of ZnO nanorods bundle sensor was explained by well-known surface reaction between ZnO surface atoms and hydrogen sulfide. However at high sensing temperature, chemical conversion of ZnO nanorods becomes a dominant sensing mechanism in current system. In order to improve the gas sensing properties, simple type of gas sensor was fabricated with ZnO nano-heterostructures, which were prepared by deposition of CuO, Au on the ZnO nanorods bundle. These heteronanostructures show higher gas response and higher current level than ZnO nanorods bundle. The gas sensing mechanism of the heteronanostructure can be explained by the chemical conversion of sensing material through the reaction with target gas.

  • The purpose of this paper is to establish the optimum fabricating condition of specimens using silk screen printing, and to develop humidity sensor which has good humidity sensing properties. The specimens are fabricated under the condition of 90[wt%] $SnO_2$-10[wt%] $TiO_2$, and their microstructure, crystalline structure, humidity sensing properties are examined. From the microstructure analyses, porosity is best at 700[$^{\circ}C$]. From the crystalline structure analyses, intensity of peak becomes strong according to increasing heat treatment temperature. From the humidity sensing properties analyses, an overall results of capacitance changes, linearity and hysteresis for the specimens is best at 600[$^{\circ}C$] and 700[$^{\circ}C$]. Capacitance of specimens increases according to decreasing measurement frequency, and to increasing relative humidity.

  • We fabricated electrolyte-insulator-semiconductor (EIS) devices using a solution process and measured the sensing properties of EIS devices according to the thicknesses of sensing membrane. For high pH sensitivity and better stability properties, we used $SiO_2/HfO_x$ (OH) layer as a sensing membrane. In this work, $HfO_x$ sensing membranes were deposited on 5 nm thick $SiO_2$ buffer layer by spin coater with thicknesses of 15, 31, 42, 55 nm, respectively. As a result, we founded that the thickness of $HfO_x$ sensing membrane affects to sensitivity and chemical stability of EIS device. Especially, the EIS device with 42 nm thick $HfO_x$ membrane showed superior sensing ability in terms of pH-sensitivity, linearity, hysteresis voltage and drift rate characteristics than the other devices. In conclusion, we confirmed that it is possible to improve the sensing ability and the chemical stability properties using optimized thickness of sensing membrane and proper annealing process.

  • This study reports the H2S gas sensing properties of CuO / ZnO nano-hetero structure bundle and the investigation of gas sensing mechanism. The 1-Dimensional ZnO nano-structure was synthesized by hydrothermal method and CuO / ZnO nano-heterostructures were prepared by photo chemical reaction. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra confirmed a well-crystalline ZnO of hexagonal structure. In order to improve the H2S gas sensing properties, simple type of gas sensor was fabricated with ZnO nano-heterostructures, which were prepared by photo-chemical deposition of CuO on the ZnO nanorods bundle. The furnace type gas sensing system was used to characterize sensing properties with diluted H2S gas (50 ppm) balanced air at various operating temperature up to 500$^{\circ}C$. The H2S gas response of ZnO nanorods bundle sensor increased with increasing temperature, which is thought to be due to chemical reaction of nanorods with gas molecules. Through analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the sensing mechanism of ZnO nanorods bundle sensor was explained by well-known surface reaction between ZnO surface atoms and hydrogen sulfide. • Fire fuel map is one of the most critical factors for planning and managing the fire hazard and risk. However, fuel mapping is extremely difficult because fuel properties vary at spatial scales, change depending on the seasonal situations and are affected by the surrounding environment. Remote sensing has potential to reduce the uncertainty in mapping fuels and offers the best approach for improving our abilities. Especially, Hyperspectral sensor have a great potential for mapping vegetation properties because of their high spectral resolution. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the potential of mapping fuel properties using Hyperion hyperspectral remote sensing data acquired in April, 2002. Fuel properties are divided into four broad categories: 1) fuel moisture, 2) fuel green live biomass, 3) fuel condition and 4) fuel types. Fuel moisture and fuel green biomass were assessed using canopy moisture, derived from the expression of liquid water in the reflectance spectrum of plants. Fuel condition was assessed using endmember fractions from spectral mixture analysis (SMA). Fuel types were classified by fuel models based on the results of SMA. Although Hyperion imagery included a lot of sensor noise and poor performance in liquid water band, the overall results showed that Hyperion imagery have good potential for wildfire fuel mapping.

  • Structural health monitoring and structural vibration control are multidisciplinary and frontier research directions of civil engineering. As intelligent materials that integrate sensing and actuation capabilities, shape memory alloys (SMAs) exhibit multiple excellent characteristics, such as shape memory effect, superelasticity, corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, and high energy density. Moreover, SMAs possess excellent resistance sensing properties and large deformation ability. Superfine NiTi SMA wires have potential applications in structural health monitoring and micro-drive system. In this study, the mechanical properties and electrical resistance sensing characteristics of superfine NiTi SMA wires were experimentally investigated. The mechanical parameters such as residual strain, hysteretic energy, secant stiffness, and equivalent damping ratio were analyzed at different training strain amplitudes and numbers of loading-unloading cycles. The results demonstrate that the detwinning process shortened with increasing training amplitude, while austenitic mechanical properties were not affected. In addition, superfine SMA wires showed good strain-resistance linear correlation, and the loading rate had little effect on their mechanical properties and electrical resistance sensing characteristics. This study aims to provide an experimental basis for the application of superfine SMA wires in engineering.

  • B, P, and Cs ions were implanted with various parameters into silicon nitride layers prepared by LPCVD. In order to get the maximum impurity concentration at the silicon nitride surface, a high temperature oxide (HTO) buffer layers was deposited prior to the implantation. Alkali ion and pH sensing properties of the layers were investigated with an electrolyte-insulator-silicon (EIS) structure using high frequency capacitance-voltage (HF-CV) measurements. The ion sensing properties of implanted silicon nitrides were compared to those of as-deposited silicon nitride. Band Cs co-implanted silicon nitrides showed a pronounced difference in pH and alkali ion sensing properties compared to those of as-deposited silicon nitride. B or P implanted silicon nitrides in contrast showed similar ion sensitivities like those of as-deposited silicon nitride.

  • VO2 has intensively investigated for several decades due to its interesting physical properties, including metal-insulator transition (MIT), thermochromic and thermoelectric properties, near the room temperature. And also gas and photo sensing properties of VO2 nanowires have attracted increasing research interest due to the high sensitivity and multi-sensing capability. We studied the light-induced resistance change of VO2 nanowires. In particular, we have investigated plasmonic enhancement of the photo-sensing properties of the VO2 nanowires. To select proper wavelength, we performed finite-difference time-domain simulations of electric field distribution in the VO2 nanowires attached with Ag nanoparticles. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is expected at wavelength of 560 nm. The photo-sensitivity was carefully examined as a function of the sample temperature. In the presentation, we will discuss physical origins of the photo-induced resistance change in VO2.

  • Sensing and interfacial evaluation of Ni nanowire strands/polymer composites were investigated using Electro-micromechanical technique. Electro-micromechanical techniques can be used as sensing method for micro damage, loading, temperature of interfacial properties. Using Ni nanowire strands/silicone composites with different content, load sensing response of electrical contact resistivity was investigated under tensile and compression condition. The mechanical properties of Ni nanowire strands with different type/epoxy composites were measured using uniformed cyclic loading and tensile test. Ni nanowire strands/epoxy composites showed humidity and temperature sensing within limited ranges, 20 vol% reinforcement. Some new information on temperature and humidity sensing plus loading sensing of Ni nanowire strands/polymer composites could be obtained from the electrical resistance measurement as a new concept of the nondestructive interfacial evaluation.

  • Cloud's properties can be showed on different spectral channel. The 0.65${\mu}$m reflectance is mainly function of cloud optical thickness and reflectance of 1.6${\mu}$m is sensitive to cloud phase and particle size distribution. So we can use multi-spectral information to analysis cloud's microphysical properties.
