  • A continuum-based design sensitivity analysis and topology optimization methods are developed for power flow analysis. Efficient adjoint sensitivity analysis method is employed and further extended to topology optimization problems. Young's moduli of all the finite elements are selected as design variables and parameterized using a bulk material density function. The objective function and constraint are an energy compliance of the system and an allowable volume fraction, respectively. A gradient-based optimization, the modified method of feasible direction, is used to obtain the optimal material layout. Through several numerical examples, we notice that the developed design sensitivity analysis method is very accurate and efficient compared with the finite difference sensitivity. Also, the topology optimization method provides physically meaningful results. The developed is design sensitivity analysis method is very useful to systematically predict the impact on the design variations. Furthermore, the topology optimization method can be utilized in the layout design of structural systems.

  • In the prototype stage of a car developing program, the efficiency of trouble shooting is an important factor to be considered. Structural modifications by the design sensitivity analysis are applied to a steering wheel system for improving the idle vibration of the prototype passenger car. For the design sensitivity analysis, the experimental modal analysis for the steering system attached to a body-in-white is fulfilled and the modal parameters extracted from the experimental data are used to predict the effect of structural modification, The design sensitivity results rank the locations to be reinforced in terms of frequency variation. The modification of steering system according to the sensitivity analysis results shifted the resonant frequency of the system effectively. In addition, the idle test of the car after the structural modifications f steering system shows that the proposed method can reduce vibration of the steering wheel efficiently.

  • This paper deals with the basic concepts of sensitivity analysis in a time domain for the transient response of a lumped mass system. Sensitivity analysis methods in thme domain for determining the effects of parameter changes on the response of a dynamic system by external excitation are presented. The parametric sensitivity of a lumped mass system in time domain can be investigated using different types of sensitivity functions, including first order standard and percentage sensitivity functions. These sensitivity functions are determined as a function of partial derivatives of system variables taken with respect to system parameters. In addition, we compared the results of the analytical method by direct method and those of numerical methods.

  • This paper presents a sensitivity analysis to obtain best fit of hydraulic parameters of leaky fractal aquifer. The sensitivity analysis uses the least squares method. The hydraulic parameters (generalized transmissivity and generalized storage coefficient) can be easily determined by the sensitivity analysis for various flow dimensions and different values of the leakage factor. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis was applied to variable-rate pump tast at several abstraction wells, A computer program was developed to evaluate the hydraulic parameters by the sensitivity analysis.

  • Design sensitivity analysis for nonlinear structural problems has been emerged in the last decade as a glowing area of engineering research. As a result, theoretical formulations and computational algorithms have already developed for design sensitivity of nonlinear structural problems. There is not enough research for practical nonlinear problems using multi-element, due to difficulties of implementation into FEA. Therefore, nonlinear response analysis for stiffened shell which consists of Mindlin plate and Timoshenko beam, was considered. Specially, it presents the backward-Euler method which is adopted to describe an exact yield state in the stress computation procedure. Then, design sensitivity analysis of nonlinear structures, particularly elasto-perfectly-plastic structure, is developed using direct differentiation method. The accuracy of the developed sensitivity analysis was compared with the central finite difference method. Finally, on the basis of above results, design improvement for stiffened shell is suggested.

  • A method of the shape design sensitivity analysis based on the boundary integral equation formulation is presented for two-dimensional inhomogeneous thermal conducting solids with multiple domains. Shape variation of the external and interface boundary is considered. A sensitivity formula of a general performance functional is derived by taking the material derivative to the boundary integral identity and by introducing an adjoint system. In numerical analysis, state variables of the primal and adjoint systems are solved by the boundary element method using quadratic elements. Two numerical examples of a compound cylinder and a thermal diffuser are taken to show implementation of the shape design sensitivity analysis. Accuracy of the present method is verified by comparing analyzed sensitivities with those by the finite difference. As application to the shape optimization, an optimal shape of the thermal diffuser is found by incorporating the sensitivity analysis algorithm in an optimization program.

  • This paper presents preliminary analysis and results on IASCC sensitivity of a core shroud in the reactor pressure vessel. First, neutron irradiation flux distribution of the reactor internals was calculated by using the Monte Carlo simulation code, MCNP6.1 and the nuclear data library, ENDF/B-VII.1. Second, based on the neutron irradiation flux distribution, temperature and stress distributions of the core shroud during normal operation were determined by performing finite element analysis using the commercial finite element analysis program, ABAQUS, considering irradiation aging-related degradation mechanisms. Last, IASCC sensitivity of the core shroud was assessed by using the IASCC sensitivity definition of EPRI MRP-211 and the finite element analysis results. As a result of the preliminary analysis, it was found that the point at which the maximum IASCC sensitivity is derived varies over operating time, initially moving from the shroud plate located in the center of the core to the top shroud plate-ring connection brace over operating time. In addition, it was concluded that IASCC will not occur on the core shroud even after 60 years of operation (40EFPYs) because the maximum IASCC sensitivity is less than 0.5.

  • A numerical approach for performing kinematic design sensitivity analysis of vehicle suspension systems is presented. Compared with the conventional analytical methods, which require explicit derivation of sensitivity equations, the proposed numerical method can be applied to any type of suspension systems without obtaining sensitivity equations, once any kinematic analysis procedure is established. To obtain sensitivity equations, a numerical differentiation algorithm that uses the third order Lagrange polynomial is developed. The algorithm efficiently and accurately computes the sensitivity of various vehicle static design factors with respect to kinematic design variables. Through a suspension design problem, the validity and usefulness of the method is demonstrated.

  • A methodology is developed and many used to evaluate the response sensitivity of the thermal systems to variations in their design parameters. Technique for computing the sensitivity of temperature distributions to changes in processing parameters needed for deciding the more effective laser input parameters for laser surface hardening treatment are considered. In this study, a state equation governing the heat flow in laser surface treatment is analyzed using a three-dimensional finite element method and sensitivity data of the processing parameter obtained using a direct differentiation method applied for sensitivity analysis. The interesting processing parameter is taken as the laser scan velocity and characteristic beam radius( $r_{b}$) of the sensitivity of the temperature T versus v and $r_{b}$ is analyzed. And these sensitivity results obtained in another parameters are fixed condition. To verifying the numerical analysis results, hardened layer dimensions (width and depth) of the numerical analysis compared with the results of an experimental data.ata.

  • A method for performing kinematic design sensitivity analysis of vehicle suspension systems is presented. For modeling of vehicle suspensions, the multibody dynamic formulation is adopted, where suspensions are assumed as combination of rigid bodies and ideal frictionless joints. In a relative joint coordinate setting, kinematic constraint equations are obtained by imposing cut-joints that transform closed-loop shape suspension systems into open-loop systems. By directly differentiating the constraint equations with respect to kinematic design variables, such as length of bodies, notion axis, etc., sensitivity equations are derived. By solving the sensitivity equations, sensitivity of static design factors that can be used for design improvement, can be obtained. The validity and usefulness of the method are demonstrated through an example where kinematic sensitivity analysis of a MacPherson strut suspension of performed.
