Improved Road light Design using Ray-tracing method (광투사 방법을 이용한 가로등 디자인 개선)

  • In this study, it was studied about the improved road light design for drivers and pedestrians using ray- or reverse ray-tracing method. Many of conventional road lights are not suitable for drivers and pedestrians because it has some serious problems such as glare effect or randomicity of illuminated areas. It was oriented from customary design method which was pointed at simple target such as luminance or electrical power. But it was not truth any more that the high luminance or electrical power consumption mean more bright and good mad light. We studied ray-tracing method for road light reflector design to get the several goals. It means that good road light has easy for drivers and Pedestrians eyes and illuminating objects on the road clearly. So, we set the design targets such as uniformity on the road area per one road light, shading angles and continuous luminance uniformity on the long distance road. We designed ideal road light conditions using ray-tracing method. We set the height of drivers and pedestrians eyes and calculated design guideline to make above design targets. Then we designed road light reflector using reverse ray-tracing method. And we achieved same luminance on the road almost half power consumption because we reduced loss of light. We achieved ideal design guide as 75 degrees of shading angles and 0.5 of luminance uniformity on the road area. Finally, we suggested reflector design for 250 watts power consumption CDM light source.

Daylight Assessment of Venetian Blind by Shading Heights and Slat Angles (베네시안 블라인드의 높이와 슬랫각도 조절에 따른 계절별 실내주광분포 분석)

  • Aims of this study is to investigate the daylighting control strategy of venetian blind system was performed as a function of ratio of shading height to window and slat angles in the preliminary stage of the parametric study. Floor-to-ceiling window walls of living spaces are used widely in apartment buildings since the Korean government has legally allowed elimination of the balcony area. Enlarging living area by balcony elimination, the larger glass area of window is exposed to the direct sunlight. As a common sunlight controlling device, blind system can be used in all orientations and all latitudes and it may obstruct, absorb, reflect and transmit solar radiation to building by proper adjusting. However, blind system can produce discomfort in occupant and less energy efficiency, if it has not been controlled optimally. The simulation model was based on the unit module of typical living space with balcony elimination. The room dimension was $6.0m(w){\times}6.9m(d){\times}2.7m(h)$ with floor to ceiling height of 2.5m. The blind system was simulated at five slat angles (horizontal, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ upward and downward tilted) and the four ratio of shading height to window (fully closed, partly opened, no-blind) using the Desktop RADIANCE 2.0 program. The series of simulation results indicates that the advantages of available daylight and outside of view can be improved by proper adjusting blind system.

Study of a Ray-Tracing Method for Optimized Road Light Design

  • A study is presented of improved road light design for drivers and pedestrians with the use of a ray- or reverse ray-tracing method. Many existing road lights are unsuitable for drivers and pedestrians because of serious problems such as glare effect or randomicity of illuminated areas. This situation has arisen because in customary design methods the emphasis has been on simple factors such as luminance or electrical power. However a high luminance or electrical power consumption, alone, do not guarantee bright and good road lighting. So we have applied a ray-tracing method to the design of a road light reflector with the goals of ensuring that illuminated objects on the road can be seen more clearly and that the illuminating light is more comfortable for the eyes of drivers and pedestrians. We have set design targets for factors such as the uniformity of lighting on the road area per road light, the shading angles and the continuous luminance uniformity on long lengths of road. For set heights of the eyes of drivers and pedestrians eyes we have calculated a design guideline for the achievement of the above design targets. Then we designed a road light reflector using the reverse ray-tracing approach. Also we have achieved the same luminance on the road with almost half the power consumption, through the reduction of lighty loss. In an ideal design optimum parameters are suggested to be a shading angle of 75 degrees and a luminance uniformity of 0.5 on the road area. This reflector performance is achievable with a 250 watt power consumption ceramic discharge metal light source.

Evaluation on the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient of Glazing System installed in internal shading device by experiments according to the NFRC 201 (NFRC 201 실험방법에 의한 내부 차양장치가 적용된 창호의 일사획득계수 평가)

  • Recently the researchers has been interested in the development of the high performance windows such as solar control window using automatic shading devices, air-flow window, selective coating window. In order to assess the energy performance of total fenestration system, the net energy gains or losses through the glazings and windows should be evaluated. It depends on the thermal transmittance (U-value) and the total solar energy transmittance (SHGC, g-value). This study aims to measure the solar heat gain coefficient according to the NFRC 201 standard test method. In results, we could find the result of different SHGC of the glazing system with a different slat angles. The SHGC in case of $90^{\circ}$ of internal slat angle with regard to the window surface is about 0.56, that in case of $45^{\circ}$ is about 0.49 and that in case of $0^{\circ}$ is about 0.33. Significant dependence on the solar radiation intensity and incident angle was found in comparison of the measured and simulated SHGC.

The Development of the Simple SHGC Calculation Method in Case of a Exterior Venetian Blind Using the Simulation (시뮬레이션을 이용한 외부 베네시안 블라인드의 약식 SHGC 계산법 개발)

  • When it comes to these buildings for business use, cooling load during summertime was reported to have great importance which, as a result, impressively increased interest in Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). Such SHGC is considered to be lowered with the help of colors and functions of glass itself, internal shading devices, insulation films and others but basically, these external shading devices for initial blocking that would not allow solar heat to come in from outside the buildings are determined to be most effective. Of many different external shading devices, this thesis conducted an analysis on Exterior Venetian Blind. As for vertical shading devices, previous researches already calculated SHGC conveniently using concepts of sky-opening ratios. However in terms of the Venetian Blind, such correlation is not possibly applied. In light of that, in order to extract a valid correlation, this study first introduced a concept called shape factor, which would use the breadth and a space of a shade, before carrying out the analysis. As a consequence, the concept helped this study to find a very similar correlation. Results of the analysis are summarized as follows. (1) Regarding SHGC depending on the surface reflectance of a shade, an average of 2% error is observed and yet, the figure can always be ignored when it comes to a simple calculation. (2) As for SHGC of each bearing, this study noticed deviations of 4% or less and in the end, it is confirmed that extraction can be achieved with no more than one correlation formula. (3) When only the shape factor and nothing else is used for finding a correlation formula, the formula with a deviation of approximately 5% or less is what one would expect. (4) Since the study observed slight differences in bearings depending on ranges of the shape factors, it needed to extract a weighted value of each bearing, and learned that the smaller the shape factor, the wider the range of a weighted value. The study now suggests that a follow-up research to extract a simple calculation formula by dealing with all these various inclined angles of shade, solar radiation conditions of each region (the ratio of diffuse radiation to direct radiation and others) as well as seasonal features should be carried out.

  • Three dimensional CAD data viewer helps a user to view and use many different types of CAD data without having costly programs that produced them loaded on their computers. A viewer for standard data formats such as STEP and IGES is more useful since most of the CAD systems provide translators for them. We developed a 3D CAD viewer for STEP AP203 solid and assembly data. In addition to the standard shading and assembly tree display, functions for 3D markups and measurement of distance and angles were implemented.

A Experiment Study on Performance Evaluation of Solar Heat Gain Coefficient in Glazing with Shading Devices (실내 차양장치 결합형 창호의 태양열 취득률 평가에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • The determination of the solar and thermal performance of fenestration is required for the evaluation of fenestration energy performance, estimating building load. Presently, there exist several methods for determining the thermal transmission(U-value) and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of fenestration system. These method are commonly grouped under calculation or experimental methods. While U-value testing and calculation methods have been long established, SHGC has been evaluated only by the method of calculation under the lack of any established testing method. However, it is difficult to assess the exact SHGC for various types of fenestration with sun-shading or other solar control systems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of interior venetian blind and roll screen on the SHGC of glazing system. SHGC has been evaluated by the KS L 9107 test method and exiting calculation method for precise comparison of the energy performances of various shading devices. In this research, the test sample consists of three different types of double glazing unit with venetian blind and roll screen. Slat angles of venetian blind were changed to $-45^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$, and$-45^{\circ}$. For the roll screen, measurements were taken with the roll screen in the closed position. In result, the venetian blind reduced SHGC by 21.2~28.4% at $45^{\circ}$, when compared to the double glazing unit. The roll screen reduced SHGC by 34.4~41.7% at closed. The differences between the measured and calculated SHGC were found to range between 0.001(0.2%) and 0.047(11.1%) for all test cases. For the cases of venetian blind $-45^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$, the deviation ratio were 3.6~9.8%, 1.1~2.6%, 4.2~11.1%, respectively. For the case of roll screen, the deviation ratio were 4.1~5.7%.

An Evaluating of Daylighting Performance by Venetian Blind Shapes Type Change - Centre on Radiance Program (베네치안 블라인드 슬랫각도 형태변화에 따른 주광성능에 관한 연구 - Radiance Program 중심으로)

  • Current Architectural Facade Designs have been trending to increased glass areas resulting in increasing impact on interior lighting and daylighting. In regards to indoor environmental quality, the increase in window space has a large impact on the daylighting received which ultimately impacts the liveability of a space. Especially when considering seasons, in the summer, excessive daylighting can result in glare as well as put an increased load in conditioning the air space further reducing energy efficiency. As a result, in order to improve the sustainability performance of a building, it is important to limit the natural lighting exposure to properly meet the needs and conditions of the building occupants. One of the most representative features to limit excessive sunlight exposure, is to incorporate operable blind systems. To this end, this research has been based on simulations performance through the Radiance Program. Radiance is capable of analyzing performance of daylight and impact of sunlight. Through analysis of different slat angles and blind shapes, impact and minimization of energy usage was evaluated. Furthermore, seasonal analysis was performed in order to understand the effects of seasonal climate factors. Ultimately this research provides an analysis of operable blinds optimization and effects of blind shape, control factors and angle of shading.
