  • Simultaneous monitoring in many locations is necessary to evaluate the air quality and analyze future trend of a city, For this purpose, it is essential to install air pollution monitoring network. The first automatic air pollution monitoring network was introduced Seoul in 1973. As of 1995, 20 monitoring stations are now in operation. Concerning the management of the air pollution monitoring network, there was some argument among the relavant scholars, non-governmental organization(NGO) and the government organization. So far, there was no extensive evaluation and analysis about the network. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the representativeness of air quality monitoring network through actual measurement of the concentration of the air pollutant. The concentration of NOx was extensively measured widely in Seoul area three times using the TEA simple measuring technique. Even the judgement level for the area representativeness was lowered to 80%, Ssangmun-dong monitoring station tend to overestimate the pollutant concentration of the covered area. While, Sinlimdong monitoring station tend to underestimate the pollutant concentration of the covered area.

  • We propose simultaneous monitoring observations of 22 GHz $H_2O$ and 43/86/129 GHz SiO masers toward ~15 evolved stars in order to investigate spatial structure and dynamical effect from SiO to $H_2O$ maser regions including mass-loss process and development of asymmetry in circumstellar envelopes. We also aim at investigating mutual association and difference between SiO and $H_2O$ masers for establishing SiO and $H_2O$ maser models coupled to hydrodynamical model of circumstellar envelope. In addition, the correlation and difference of SiO maser properties among J=1-0, J=2-1, and J=3-2 transition masers are traced according to different type of stars for constraining SiO pumping models. These scientific goals and target sources were determined based on KVN single dish and VLBI feasibility test observations at 4 bands. As a total observing time of every 2 month monitoring, about 90 and 360 hours (in average per year) are required for single dish and VLBI observations, respectively. From the 2014B observing season, these monitoring observations will be derived as one of KVN key science programs.

  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic compounds that tend to persist in environmental media for a long period of time. This work presents a 2-year monitoring study of occurrence of three PAHs (benzo(a)pyrene, naphthalene, and fluoranthene) in groundwater. The groundwater samples were collected from 106 sites of nation's groundwater quality monitoring network and analyzed by simultaneous analysis method to quantify the concentrations of the PAHs. Benzo(a)pyrene was not detected in all samples. Naphthalene and fluoranthene concentrations ranged from not detected to 12.8 ng/L and not detected to 10.5 ng/L with their detection frequency being 57.8 and 4.2%, respectively. The concentrations of PAHs in ground- and drinking waters are not currently regulated in Korea, but the concentration levels of naphthalene and fluoranthene found in this work were lower than the regulatory limits of other countries (naphthalene 0.001~0.07 mg/L, fluoranthene 0.001~1.4 mg/L). The monitoring result of this study revealed that PAHs exist as trace amounts in domestic groundwater, however continuos monitoring is necessary to protect groundwater from PAHs contamination with growing industrialization and urbanization.

  • A control chart is very useful in monitoring various production process. There are many situations in which the simultaneous control of two or more related quality variables is necessary. When the joint distribution of the process variables is multivariate normal, multivariate Shewhart control charts using the function of the maximum likelihood estimator for monitoring the dispersion matrix are considered for the simultaneous monitoring of the dispersion matrix. The performances of the multivariate Shewhart control charts based on the proposed control statistic are evaluated in term of average run length (ARL). The performance is investigated in three cases, where the variances, covariances, and variances and covariances are changed respectively. The numerical results show that the performances of the proposed multivariate Shewhart control charts are not better than the control charts using the trace of the covariance matrix in the Jeong and Cho (2012) in terms of the ARLs.

  • We developed a simultaneous strain measurement and damage detection technique using a pair of surface-mounted piezoelectric transducers and a fiber connecting them. This is a novel sensor configuration of the fiber acoustic wave (FAW) piezoelectric transducer. In this study, lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) transducers are installed conventionally on a plate's surface, which is a technique used in many structural health monitoring studies. However, our PZTs are also connected with an optical fiber. A FAW and Lamb wave are simultaneously guided in the optical fiber and the structure, respectively. The dependency of the time-of-flight of the FAW on the applied strain is quantified for strain sensing. In our experimental results, the FAW exhibited excellent linear behavior and no hysteresis with respect to the change in strain. On the other hand, the well-known damage detection function of the surface-mounted PZT transducers was still available by monitoring the waveform change in the conventional Lamb wave ultrasonic path.

  • An instrument was developed for the simultaneous determination of gas- and aerosol-phase nitrous acid (HONO). Gaseous HONO (HONO(g)) was sampled by a diffusion scrubber and particulate nitrite ($NO_2\;^-$(p)) was collected by a particle growth chamber. The collected samples were analyzed in time-sharing manner, based on the peroxynitrite-induced luminol chemiluminescence. The automated system was found to be sensitive with 13 pptv of detection limit, fast with 4 min. of sampling frequency, and simple and affordable to construct and operate. The system was optimized by adjusting the experimental parameters. The system was applied to the field measurement of gas- and particle-phase HONO during the springtime of 2004 in Gwangju, South Korea. HONO(g) concentrations varied diurnally from 200 pptv around 3 P.M. to 800 pptv at 5 A.M. The variation of $NO_2\;^-$(p) was not significant with the maximum of 240 pptv at 11 P.M. and the minimum of 170 pptv at 4 P.M., not displaying distinct characteristics.

  • For the simultaneous measurement of strain and vibration signal, a fiber Bragg grating sensor system with a dual demodulator was proposed. One demodulator using a tunable Fabry-Perot filter could measure low-frequency signal such as strain and the other demodulator using a coarse wavelength division multiplexer could detect high-frequency signal such as vibration signal using intensity demodulation method. In order to measure strain and vibration of the composite main wing model under static loading a real time monitoring program was developed. Also using intensity demodulation of CWDM, sensitivity and resolution at high frequency vibration were evaluated.

  • The simultaneous analysis of 11 semi-volatile organic acid compound which are listed as priority pollutants by EPA, were performed by GC/MS-SIM(selected ion monitoring). Two extraction procedures, sonication extraction and Soxhlet extraction, were studied as an extraction and concentration method for priority pollutants in soil. Accurecy and precision of the methods were measured by the calculation of mean recovery, mean relative standard deviation, and method detection limit. Finally, limitations and prospects were discussed.

  • In recent years, there has been a rise in epidemiological evidence suggesting the health benefits of a physically active lifestyle. However, it is not always easy for individuals to personally recognize the optimal conditions for exercise and physical activity. Wearable acceleration-based pedometers have become widely used in estimating the amount of physical activity, and to a limited extent, providing information regarding exercise intensity, but they have never been used to assess adaptation to exercise. In order to realize simultaneous activity monitoring for multiple users exercising outdoors, we developed a prototype wireless local area network (WLAN) based system. In our system, a WLAN is deployed outside, and a user wearing a smart phone and monitoring device exercises freely within the coverage area of the wireless network. By doing so, the developed system is able to monitor the activity of each user andmeasures various parameters including those related to exercise adaptation. In a demonstration experiment, the developed system was evaluated and used to monitor users enjoying a Nordic walk, after which users were immediately able to receive their exercise report. In this paper, we discuss the requirements and issues in developing an activity monitoring system and report the findings we obtained through the demonstration experiment.
