Development and Application of Slime Meter for Evaluation of Slime Thickness in Borehole (굴착공 내 슬라임 두께 평가를 위한 슬라임미터의 개발 및 적용)

  • The slime formed at the bottom of the borehole causes the excessive displacement and loss of the bearing capacity of the drilled shaft. In this study, the slime meter is developed for the evaluation of the slime based on the electrical properties of the fluid and the slime in the borehole. The slime meter is composed of a probe instrumented with electrodes and temperature sensor and a frame with rotary encoder, so that the slime meter profiles the electrical resistivity compensated with temperature effect along the depth. For the application of the slime meter, three field tests are conducted at a borehole with a diameter of 3 m and a depth of 46.9 m with different testing time and locations. For all the tests, the experimental results show that while electrical resistivities are constantly measured in the fluid, the electrical resistivities sharply increase at the surface of the slime. Therefore, the slime thicknesses are estimated by the differences in the depths of the slime surface and the ground excavation. The experimental results obtained at the same testing point with different testing time show that the estimated thickness of the slime increases by the elapsed time. Also, the estimated slime at the side of the borehole is thicker than that at the center of the borehole. As the slime meter estimates the slime in the borehole by measuring the electrical resistivity with simple equipment, the slime meter may be effectively used for the evaluation of the slime formed at the bottom of the borehole.

The Distribution of Cellular Slime Molds in Forests of Seoul Area and Relationship between Cellular Slime Molds and Soil Microorganisms (서울지역 삼림에서 세포성 점균의 분포와 토양 미생물과의 관계)

  • In this study, the distribution of dictyostelid cellular slime molds was investigated from F, H and $A_1$ horizon of pinus, oak forests in Mt. Puk'an, Mt. Nam and Mt. Kwanak. The relationship of cellular slime molds with other soil microorganisms and abiotic factors were analyzed. The six species were isolated as follows: Polysphondlium pallidurn, Dictyostelium purpureum, D. mucoroides, D. crassicaule, D. capitatum, D. implicatum. The dominant species in pinus forests was P. pallidum, and in oak forests it was D. macro ides. In Mt. Nam, D. mucoroides and P. pallidum were isolated at only oak forest. The Correlations of slime mold abundance with bacteria were significant. Even though positive correlations of cellular slime molds with actinomycetes or fungi were not significant, correlations between soil microorganisms were analyzed. Correlation coefficients were high in Mt. Kwanak(r=0.5921) and Mt. Nam(r=0.7243) at significant level P<0.01. There were significant correlations between total slime molds and abiotic factors. It supports that cellular slime molds are limited by foods in nature. In low level of pH, water content and organic matter, that community diversity is more affected by bacteria whose organic degradation capacity is regulated by interactions of soil microorgaisms. Strength and stiffness characteristics of cement paste-slime mixtures for embedded piles

  • Slime is produced by excavation during the installation of embedded piles, and it tends to mix with the cement paste injected into the pile shafts. The objective of this study is to investigate the strength and stiffness characteristics of cement pasteslime mixtures. Mixtures with different slime ratios are prepared and cured for 28 days. Uniaxial compression tests and elastic wave measurements are conducted to obtain the static and dynamic properties, respectively. The uniaxial compressive strengths and static elastic moduli of the mixtures are evaluated according to the curing period, slime ratio, and water-cement ratio. In addition, dynamic properties, e.g., the constrained, shear, and elastic moduli, are estimated from the compressional and shear wave velocities. The experimental results show that the static and dynamic properties increase under an increase in the curing period but decrease under an increase in the slime and water-cement ratios. The cement paste-slime mixtures show several exponential relationships between their static and dynamic properties, depending on the slime ratio. The bearing mechanisms of embedded piles can be better understood by examining the strength and stiffness characteristics of cement paste-slime mixtures.

Estimation of Exposure to Boron from Children's Slime Use in Korea (슬라임(액체괴물) 중 붕소 함량과 어린이의 붕소 노출량 추정)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the boron concentrations in 30 slime products and estimate children's dermal exposure to boron. Methods: Thirty slime products from online and offline stores were purchased for boron analysis. The boron content of each slime sample was analyzed using ICP-OES. A nationwide survey was performed to determine use patterns of slimes by a home-visit survey of 10,000 children divided into three age groups: 0-2, 3-6, and 7-12 years. The dermal exposure to boron was calculated using an exposure algorithm for child slime users. Results: The proportion of the child population using slime was 45.8%, and the mean use frequency was $2.5{\pm}3.8$ per week (range: 0.08-35). Mean time spent playing with slime was $19.6{\pm}11.3min$ (range: 1-100). Twenty-five of the thirty slimes contained a boron concentration exceeding the EU limit for toys made with sticky material of 300 mg/kg. Dermal exposure ranged from $0.0008-13.78{\mu}g/kg/day$ with the maximum weight fractions of boron in the 30 products. The dermal exposure estimate was the highest in 7-12 years old group. Conclusion: Slime use among Korean children may cause high exposure to boron. Regulation is needed to minimize boron exposure from slime products.

Isolation and Identification of the Origins Causing the Slime Found in Pulp and Paper Making Processes (제재공장내 슬라임 발생원의 분리와 동정)

  • The presence of slime in paper mills is practically universal. Many researches have been performed for many years to resolve the problem caused by the slime in pulp and paper mill. Many papers have been published to show the bacteria is a major cause of paper mill slime. Now that the recycling of the water has been increased and the regulations of a toxic chemical dosage have become more strengthen, the importance of the control of slime in pulp and paper mill recently has been more recognized. Therefore, to produce quality products at the lowest economic and environmental costs, a through study of the microbial ecology and the indentification of troublesome slime-forming bacteria is a quite necessary. The purpose of this paper is to indentify slime~forming bacteria isolated from the papermaking process. The samples were taken from four parts of making fine paper : machine chest, head box, wire part, white water tank. Machine chest showed the most numbers of bacteria, numbering $2.55{\times}10^7$. The different colony types were taken from the 105 dilution plate. Nine bacteria were identified u sing the Biolog system and the vitek system: 6 gram-negative bacteria, 3 gram-positive bacteria. They are Pseudomonas paucimobilis B., Staphylococcus sp., Acinetobacter calcoaceticus., Pseudomonas cepacia, Actinobaci1lus capsulatus, Acidovorax sp., Flavobacterium sp., and Staphylococcus auricularis in addition to one unidentified sp., Among them. Pseudomonas paucimobillis was found in all places where the samples were taken. And, each parts had the different predominant bacteria in it : Pseudomonas paucimobilis B. in machine chest, Acinetobactor calcoaceticus. in Wire Part and Staphylococcus sp. in head box.

Hydrochloric Acid Leaching of Arsenic from Arsenic-Bearing Copper Slime. (동전련 부산물인 함비소 동슬라임으로부터 염산에 의한 비소의 침출)

  • The hydrochloric acid leaching has been studied as a fundamental experiment on the recovery of arsenic from arsenic-bearing copper slime in copper electrorefining. The slime is mainly composed of $\beta-Cu_3As$ Which is intermetallic compound of CU and As. And the minor components are $CU_2O$ and CusAs in the slime. The optimum conditions of leaching of the slime were found to be as follows : 6N hydrochloric acid, particle size passed through 140 mesh, leaching for 150 min at $60^{\circ}C$, ratio of HCI/slime of 3 to 1 ; where 98 percent of arsenic were leached out of the As-bearing slime.

Two Species of Myxomycetes Causing Slime Mold of Sweet Potato

  • Specimens collected from sweet potato plants with slime mold symptoms in fields in Daejeon, Korea were examined. Two species of Myxomycetes, Fuligo septica and Stemonitis herbatica were identified based on their morphological characteristics. This is the first report that the two species of Myxomycetes cause slime mold of sweet potato in Korea.

  • To evaluate antimicrobial activities of chongkukjang slime fermented by different strains, growth characteristics were compared using various standard microorganisms with addition of chongkykjang slime. Chonghkjang slime was prepared by fermenting cooked soybean after inoculating with Bacillus circulans K-1, Baciilus spp N-1 and Bacillus subtilis CH-1, respectively. Significant antimicrobial activity was observed by chongkukjang slime on gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Micrococcus luteus), gram negative bacteria(Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Typhimurium, Pseudomonas fluorescens), and yeast (Pichia membranaefaciens, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida albicans). In case of B. cereus growth inhibition of 80% was achieved by the addition of chongkukjang slime; on the contrary, to Escherichia coli O157:H7 only 20% inhibition was observed. Slime from Bacillus subtilis CH-1, in particular, inhibition of 40% toward bacteria and yeast, whereas slime from Bacillus circulans K-1, Bacillus spp N-1 showed only 20% inhibition.

A Study on the Distribution and the Effect of Torreya Fruit Extract on Cellular Slime Molds in Torreya Forest of Cheju Island (제주도 비자림에서의 세포성 점균의 분포 및 비자열매 추출액의 성장 효과에 관한 연구)

  • Dictyostelid cellular slime molds were isolated from soils and harks of the subtropical forest of Torreya nucifera in Cheju island. The results were as follows: Polysphondylium pallidum,Dictyostelium purpureum, D. mucoroides, D. aureo-stipes var. aureo-stipes, D. flavidum, D. miniutum, P.violaceu m, D. monocrhasioides. D. brefeldianum, D. polvcephalum. D. areum var. areum, P. tenuissimum, D. fasciculatum. In this forest, P. pallidum and D. purpureum were occurred dominantly, and D. mucoroides and D. aureo-stipes var, aureo-stipes were the second dominant. It was distinguished that D. purpureum was much more cornmonly found than the other forests. Cellular slime molds from the barks of the tree heights of 1,3 and 5m were occured 7, 3 and 2 species respectively. Torreya fruit extract affected on the growth of D. aureo-stipes var. aureo-stipes and D. flavidum but not on D. purpureum and D. mucoroides. Estimation of Slime Thickness of Bored Piles by Using Borehole Electrical Resistivity Method (시추공 전기비저항 기법을 활용한 현장타설말뚝의 슬라임층 두께 평가)

  • The slime, deposited in the bored pile due to falling soil particle, reduces the bearing capacity of bored pile and thus the stability of construction also decreases. The weight pendulum and iron have been used for estimating the slime thickness based on the subjective judgment and thus the previous method has a limitation of reliability. The objective of this paper is to suggest the method for estimating the slime thickness by using characteristics of electrical resistivity as scientific method. The temperature-compensation resistivity probe (TRP), which has a conical shape and the diameter of 35.7mm, is applied to the measurement of the electrical resistivity in the borehole during penetration. The field tests are carried out for estimating the slime thickness in the application site of bored pile. The slime thickness is calculated through the difference between excavation depth of borehole and measured data. Furthermore, the laboratory tests are also conducted for investigating effects of casing, time elapsing and relative density by using the specimen of slime. The laboratory test supporting the suggested method is reasonable for determining the slime depth. The paper suggests that the electrical resistivity method may be a useful method for detecting slime thickness and the method is expected to be applicable to various sites of bored piles.
