Performance Enhancement of Speaker Identification System Based on GMM Using the Modified EM Algorithm (수정된 EM알고리즘을 이용한 GMM 화자식별 시스템의 성능향상)

  • Recently, Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM), a special form of CHMM, has been applied to speaker identification and it has proved that performance of GMM is better than CHMM. Therefore, in this paper the speaker models based on GMM and a new GMM using the modified EM algorithm are introduced and evaluated for text-independent speaker identification. Various experiments were performed to evaluate identification performance of two algorithms. As a result of the experiments, the GMM speaker model attained 94.6% identification accuracy using 40 seconds of training data and 32 mixtures and 97.8% accuracy using 80 seconds of training data and 64 mixtures. On the other hand, the new GMM speaker model achieved 95.0% identification accuracy using 40 seconds of training data and 32 mixtures and 98.2% accuracy using 80 seconds of training data and 64 mixtures. It shows that the new GMM speaker identification performance is better than the GMM speaker identification performance.

  • One key factor that hinders the widespread deployment of speaker identification technologies is the requirement of long enrollment utterances to guarantee low error rate during identification. To gain user acceptance of speaker identification technologies, adaptation algorithms that can enroll speakers with short utterances are highly essential. To this end, this paper applies MLLR speaker adaptation for speaker enrollment and compares its performance against other speaker modeling techniques: GMMs and HMM. Also, to speed up the computational procedure of identification, we apply speaker clustering method which uses principal component analysis (PCA) and weighted Euclidean distance as distance measurement. Experimental results show that MLLR adapted modeling method is most effective for short enrollment utterances and that the GMMs performs better when long utterances are available.

  • In this paper, we construct phonetic GMM for text-independent speaker identification system. The basic idea is to combine of the advantages of baseline GMM and HMM. GMM is more proper for text-independent speaker identification system. In text-dependent system, HMM do work better. Phonetic GMM represents more sophistgate text-dependent speaker model based on text-independent speaker model. In speaker identification system, phonetic GMM using HMM-based speaker-independent phoneme recognition results in better performance than baseline GMM. In addition to the method, N-best recognition algorithm used to decrease the computation complexity and to be applicable to new speakers.

  • Forensic speaker identification needs high accuracy and reliability. However, the current level of speaker identification does not reach its demand. Therefore, the confidence evaluation of results is one of the issues in forensic speaker identification. In this paper, we propose a new confidence measure of forensic speaker identification system. This is based on pitch differences between the registered utterances of the identified speaker and the test utterance. In the experiments, we evaluate this confidence measure by speech identification tasks on various environments. As the results, the proposed measure can be a good measure indicating if the result is reliable or not.

  • It has been known that GMM (Gaussian Mixture Model) based speaker identification systems using ML (Maximum Likelihood) and WMR (Weighting Model Rank) demonstrate very high performances. However, such systems are not so effective under practical environments, in terms of real time processing, because of their high calculation costs. In this paper, we propose a new speaker-pruning algorithm that effectively reduces the calculation cost. In this algorithm, we select 20% of speaker models having higher likelihood with a part of input speech and apply MWMR (Modified Weighted Model Rank) to these selected speaker models to find out identified speaker. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, we performed speaker identification experiments using TIMIT database. The proposed method shows more than 60% improvement of reduced processing time than the conventional GMM based system with no pruning, while maintaining the recognition accuracy.

  • In this paper, we propose the speaker identification system that uses vowel that has speaker's characteristic. System is divided to speech feature extraction part and speaker identification part. Speech feature extraction part extracts speaker's feature. Voiced speech has the characteristic that divides speakers. For vowel extraction, formants are used in voiced speech through frequency analysis. Vowel-a that different formants is extracted in text. Pitch, formant, intensity, log area ratio, LP coefficients, cepstral coefficients are used by method to draw characteristic. The cpestral coefficients that show the best performance in speaker identification among several methods are used. Speaker identification part distinguishes speaker using Neural Network. 12 order cepstral coefficients are used learning input data. Neural Network's structure is MLP and learning algorithm is BP (Backpropagation). Hidden nodes and output nodes are incremented. The nodes in the incremental learning neural network are interconnected via weighted links and each node in a layer is generally connected to each node in the succeeding layer leaving the output node to provide output for the network. Though the vowel extract and incremental learning, the proposed system uses low learning data and reduces learning time and improves identification rate.

On using the LPC parameter for Speaker Identification (LPC에 의한 화자 식별)

  • Preliminary results of using the LPC parameter for text-independent speaker identification problem are presented. The idetification process includes log likelihood ratio for distance measure and dynamic programming for time normalization. To generate the data base for experiments, ten times. Experimental results show 99.4% of identification accuracy, incorrect identification were made when the speaker uses a dialect.

  • In this paper we use a training algorithm, MCE (Minimum Classification Error), to improve the performance of a text-independent speaker identification system. The MCE training scheme takes account of possible competing speaker hypotheses and tries to reduce the probability of incorrect hypotheses. Experiments performed on a small set speaker identification task show that the discriminant training method using MCE can reduce identification errors by up to 54% over a baseline system trained using Bayesian adaptation to derive GMM (Gaussian Mixture Models) speaker models from a UBM (Universal Background Model).

  • Recently demands for the speech technology-based products targeted for the mobile terminals such as cellular phones and PDA are rapidly increasing. And voting-based speaker identification algorithm is known to have a good performance in the mobile environment, since it works well with small amount of speaker training data. In this paper, we proposed a method to improve the performance of this voting based speaker identification system by using the observation confidence value which is derived from the function of SNR each frame. The proposed method is evaluated with ETRI cellular phone DB which is made for the speaker recognition task. The experimental results show that the proposed method has better performance of 2-3% identification rate than the conventional GMM method.

Speaker Identification Using PCA Fuzzy Mixture Model (PCA 퍼지 혼합 모델을 이용한 화자 식별)

  • In this paper, we proposed the principal component analysis (PCA) fuzzy mixture model for speaker identification. A PCA fuzzy mixture model is derived from the combination of the PCA and the fuzzy version of mixture model with diagonal covariance matrices. In this method, the feature vectors are first transformed by each speaker's PCA transformation matrix to reduce the correlation among the elements. Then, the fuzzy mixture model for speaker is obtained from these transformed feature vectors with reduced dimensions. The orthogonal Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) can be derived as a special case of PCA fuzzy mixture model. In our experiments, with having the number of mixtures equal, the proposed method requires less training time and less storage as well as shows better speaker identification rate compared to the conventional GMM. Also, the proposed one shows equal or better identification performance than the orthogonal GMM does.
