  • Objectives: The purpose of this research was to study the Psychological Characteristics of Korean Medicine Students, focusing on Korean version of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Methods: We conducted survey on 101 Korean Medicine Students to investigate the Psychological Characteristics of Korean Medicine Students, focusing on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Results: 1. 14.8% of students scored more than 52 points in the State Anxiety Inventory, and 20.8% of students scored more than 53 points in the Trait Anxiety Inventory. 2. Students with anxiety according to the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory showed higher scores in the Sc, Pd, Si, RC4 scales, as compared to students without anxiety (p<.05). 3. Students with anxiety according to the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory showed higher scores in the Pt, RCd, RC7 and NEGE scales, as compared to students without anxiety (p<.05). Conclusions: Students with anxiety seem to have difficulty in adjusting socially, as compared to students without anxiety. In addition, students with anxiety have a personality tendency to experience negative emotions, as compared to students without anxiety.

  • This article focuses on the psychometric stability of the technology acceptance model (TAM) by Davis [8] when applied to laptop usage in the educational settings. Using a survey of 297 users, this research provides evidence that the TAM provides a model for a valid and reliable measure to use among students in assessing their perceptions of laptop usage. Given this evidence, those involved with implementation and training in laptop environment can confidently apply the instrument.

  • Animal cells in culture typically convert most of the glucose they consume into lactate. The accumulation of lactate, however, is commonly cited as one of the factors that inhibit cell growth and limit the maximum cell concentration that can be achieved in culture. The specific production of lactate and the amount of glucose converted to lactate can be reduced when cells are grown in a fed-batch culture in which the residual glucose concentration is maintained at low levels. Such a fed-batch culture was used to grow and adapt hybridoma cells into a low-lactate-producing state before changing into continuous culture. The cells reached and maintained a high viable cell concentration at steady state. In a similar manner, cells that were initially grown in batch culture and a glucose-rich environment reached a steady state with a cell concentration that is much lower. The feed composition and dilution rates for both cultures were similar, suggesting steady state multiplicity. From a processing perspective the desired steady state among those is the one with the least metabolite production. At such seady state nutrient concentration in the feed can be further increased to increase cell and product concentrations without causing the metabolite inhibitory effect typically seen in a cell culture. Controlling cell metabolism in a continuous culture to reduce or eliminate waste metabolite production may significantly improve the productivity of mammalian cell culture processes.

  • The Box-Cox transformation is a well known family of power transformations that brings a set of data into agreement with the normality assumption of the residuals and hence the response variable of a postulated model in regression analysis. Normalization (studentization) of the regressors is a common practice in analyzing microarray data. Here, we implement Box-Cox transformation in normalizing regressors in microarray data. Pridictabilty of the model can be improved using data transformation compared to studentization.

  • The Weibull variate is commonly used as a lifetime distribution in reliability applications. Estimation of parameters is revisited in the two-parameter Weibull distribution. The method of product spacings, the method of quantile estimates and the method of least squares are applied to this distribution. A comparative study between a simple minded estimate, the maximum likelihood estimate, the product spacings estimate, the quantile estimate, the least squares estimate, and the adjusted least squares estimate is presented.

  • An exclusive simulation study is conducted in computing means for order statistics in standard normal variate. Monte Carlo moments are used in Shapiro-Francia W' statistic computation. Finally, quantiles for Shapiro-Francia W' are generated. The study shows that in computing means for order statistics in standard normal variate, complicated distributions and intensive numerical integrations can be avoided by using Monte Carlo simulation. Lack of accuracy is minimal and computation simplicity is noteworthy.

  • The subject of assessing whether a data set is from a specific distribution has received a good deal of attention. This topic is critically important for uniform distributions. Several parametric tests are compared. These tests also can be used in testing randomness of a sample. Anderson-Darling $A^2$ statistic is found to be most powerful.

  • Betulin, a pentacyclic triterpenoid isolated from the bark of Betula papyrifera. Laboratory synthesized structural analogs were tested for antiviral activities against Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) by immunofluorescent antiviral assay. Among the several analogs tested, betulin 3,28-diphosphate and uvaol exhibited significant antiviral activities against EBV. The $EC_{50}$ of betulin 3,28-diphosphate and uvaol was found to be $0.6\mu{M}$ and $0.7\mu{M}$ respectively.
