  • This paper presents a experimental structural performance of steel-concrete hybrid bridge deck, which has studs to connect steel plate and concrete and T beam to improve structural performance, by steel plate shape, studs and load location. It proved that steel-concrete hybrid deck has a high structural performance and lightweight due to the efficient use of steel plate as a structural member, which has only used as formwork. In failure mode, few specimen failed at punching shear and many specimen at concrete crushing, therefore proved it has sufficient stability to punching shear which is the most frequent damage of bridge deck. Steel-concrete hybrid deck of plane steel plate has a high structural performance, and that of corrugated steel plate has a high reduction of weight.

  • This paper aims to investigate the strength degradation of reinforced concrete piers wrapped with steel plates which corrode at the pier base by employing a three dimensional elasto-plastic finite element formulation. The prediction accuracy of the employed finite element analysis method is firstly verified by comparing the analytical results with test results. Then, a series of parametric studies is carried out to investigate the effects of steel plate's corrosion position along width direction, corrosion depth along plate thickness, corrosion range along width direction, and steel plate-concrete bonding degradation on the strength of the piers. It is observed that the strength degradation of the piers is closely related to steel plate's corrosion position, corrosion depth and corrosion range in the case of local corrosion on the webs. In contrast, when the base of flanges corrodes, the strength degradation of the piers is only related to steel plate's corrosion depth and corrosion range, and the influence of corrosion position on the strength degradation is very gentle. Furthermore, the strength of the piers decreases with the degradation of steel plate-concrete bonding behavior. Finally, the maximum strength of the piers obtained from numerical analysis corresponding to different bonding behavior is compared with theoretical results within an accepted error.

  • An innovated type of the flat steel plate-lightweight aggregate concrete hollow composite slab was presented in this paper. This kind of the slab is composed of flat steel plate and the lightweight aggregate concrete slab, which were interfaced with a set of perfobond shear connectors (PBL shear connectors) with circular hollow structural sections (CHSS) and the shear stud connectors. Five specimens were tested under static monotonic loading. In the test, the influence of shear span/height ratios and arrangements of CHSS on bending capacity and flexural rigidity of the composite slabs were investigated. Based on the test results, the crack patterns, failure modes, the bending moment-curvature curves as well as the strains of the flat steel plate and the concrete were focused and analyzed. The test results showed that the flat steel plate was fully connected to the lightweight aggregate concrete slab and no obvious slippage was observed between the steel plate and the concrete, and the composite slabs performed well in terms of bending capacity, flexural rigidity and ductility. It was further shown that all of the specimens failed in bending failure mode regardless of the shear span/height ratios and the arrangement of CHSS. Moreover, the plane-section assumption was proved to be valid, and the calculated formulas for predicting the bending capacity and the flexural rigidity of the composite slabs were proposed on the basis of the experimental results.

  • The behavior of connections between open sandwich slabs and double steel skin composite walls in steel plate-concrete(SC) structure is investigated by a series of experimental programs to identify the roles of components in the transfer of forces. Such connections are supposed to transfer shear by the action of friction on the interface between the steel surface and the concrete surface, as well as the shear resistance of the bottom steel plate attached to the wall. Experimental observation showed that shear transfer in slabs subjected to shear in short spans is explained by direct force transfer via diagonal struts and indirect force transfer via truss actions. Shear resistance at the interface is enhanced by the shear capacity of the shear plate as well as friction caused by the compressive force along the wall plate. Shear friction resistance along the wall plate was deduced from experimental observation. Finally, the appropriate design strength of the connection is proposed for a practical design purpose.

  • The stiffness of pavement is scarcely considered in structural analysis of the superstructure bridge. It will be reasonable in the case of asphalt concrete pavement over concrete deck plate because stiffness of the pavement compared with concrete deck plate can be ignored. Additionally, it is considered correct to do a design with a safety. However, various pavement materials which have even value reaching to the elastic modulus of concrete are applied to the orthotropic steel deck plate which has a relatively less stiffness comparing with the concrete deck plate. In this paper, the steel plate deck of the bridge of real project was modeled considering the pavement stiffness for the FEM analysis and the linear elastic analysis was performed. It was assumed to be perfectly bonded between the steel plate deck and the pavement and the temperature effect was ignored. It was analyzed on the vertical deflection of steel deck plate influencing to the serviceability of pavement and the bending stress of steel deck plate related to the fatigue life. As a result, It was indicated that the structural behavior of the orthotropic steel deck plate could be affected by the stiffness of pavement in some cases.

  • An experimental study to evaluate structural capacity of an embedded plate connected with prestressed concrete beam was performed. Embedded steel plates and prestressed concrete beam were connected with stud-bolts at the ends of concrete beam specimens. About 1,000 kN concentrated load was applied at 450mm away from the end of beam specimen. A 3,000 kN capacity static Oil-jack was used to direct concentrated load. The maximum strain of stud-bolt recorded $90{\times}10^{-6}$(mm/mm) and wide width cracks were not founded. Any falling failures of concrete and large deformations were not founded either between steel plate and prestressed concrete specimen. As a result, construction performance can be improved using this embedded steel plate connection system apply to large space educational facilities.

  • The main goal of this study was to develop a convenient strengthening technique for retrofitting of reinforced concrete members. For this purpose a new retrofitting material so-called prefabricated-HSPRCC (high performance steel plate reinforced cementitious composite) panel was developed by using high performance concrete and perforated steel plate. Prefabricated-HSPRCC composes advantages of steel and high performance concrete. The prefabricated-HSPRCC panels were either only bonded on the specimens using epoxy mortar or anchored to the specimen by steel bolts as well as bonding. Effect of different variations such as prefabricated-HSPRCC panel thicknesses, steel plate thicknesses, puncture orientation of perforated steel plate, existence of anchorage etc. were studied through a simple experimental work. The behaviour of the specimens under vertical point load was also studied by using simple mechanics. The retrofitted specimens were found to exhibit much better performance both in terms of strength and deformation capability. The anchorage application was found to positively affect this improved performance. Furthermore, as a result of the tests the best parameters of prefabricated-HSPRCC plate for improving strength and deformation capacities were determined.

  • Steel fiber reinforced concrete can improve the resistance to cracking by adding steel fibers when mixing concrete. It can reduce the temperature and shrinkage cracks, and its flexural performance can be improved by increasing the effective moment of inertia. In this study, the deck-plate was used to replace the concrete form and reinforcing bars, and the steel fiber reinforced concrete was used to control the shrinkage and temperature cracks, and improve the flexural performance of the slab. Total 9 slab specimens were tested for analyzing the structural performance and serviceability. As a results, flexural capacity of the slab with deck-plate was evaluated to be superior to that of the normal reinforced concrete slab specimens with the same tensile reinforcement. The steel fiber reinforced concrete was found to have about 8% flexural capacity increase depending on the steel fiber content $15.7kg/m^3$. Also, in terms of flexural stiffness, the specimens using steel fiber reinforced concrete for the same parameters were evaluated to have a stiffness increase of about 30% compared with the case of using ordinary concrete. Especially, it was found that the stiffness of the test results was significantly higher than the analytical result because the increase of the tensile strength of the steel fiber reinforced concrete is not reflected in the current structural code.

  • The pavement stiffness is scarcely used in structural analysis to design the superstructure of bridge. It is reasonable not to consider it in the case of asphalt concrete pavement over concrete deck because the pavement stiffness compared with the concrete deck plate can be ignored. However, sometimes, the pavement materials have a similar amount of elastic modulus to concrete and are applied to the orthotropic steel deck plate which has relatively less stiffness compared with the concrete deck plate. In this paper, the steel plate deck of a real bridge project was analyzed by considering the pavement stiffness by linear elastic FEM. It was assumed that a perfect bond between the steel plate deck and the pavement exited. The results indicated that the structural behavior of the orthotropic steel deck plate can be estimated enough to affect the evaluation result of structural capacity in some cases. Therefore, the investigations by experimental tests and more advanced numerical model are indispensible in figuring the design formula for considering the effects of pavement stiffness in the structural analysis of an orthotropic bridge.

  • In the present paper, the impact damage behavior of steel plate reinforced concrete panels exposed to shock impulsive loading and fragment impact loading is investigated. To evaluate the retrofit performance of a steel-strengthened concrete panels, a numerical experiment using a numerical simulation with AUTODYN, an explicit analysis program is introduced because a real explosion experiment requires the vast investment and expense for facilities as well as the deformation mechanisms are too complicated to be reproduced with a conventional closed-form analyses. The model for the analysis is simplified and idealized as a two-dimensional and axisymmetric case controled with geometry, boundary condition and material properties in order to obtain a resonable computation time. As a result of the analysis, panels subject to either shock loading or fragment loading without the steel plate reinforcement experience the perforation with spalled fragments. In addition, the panels reinforced with steel plate can prevent the perforation and provide the good mechanical effect such as the increase of global stiffness and strength through the composite action between the concrete slab and the steel plate.
