  • This paper treats the problem of estimating an arbitrary parametric function in the case when the parameter and sample spaces are countable and the decision space is arbitrary. Using the notions of a stepwise Bayesian procedure and finite admissibility, a theorem is proved. It shows that under some assumptions, every finitely admissible estimator is unique stepwise Bayes with respect to a finite or countable sequence of mutually orthogonal priors with finite supports. Under an additional assumption, it is shown that the converse is true as well. The first can be also extended to the case when the parameter and sample space are arbitrary, i.e., not necessarily countable, and the underlying probability distributions are discrete.

  • This paper deals with a method for estimating variance components on the basis of projections under the assumption of random effects model. It discusses how to use projections for getting sums of squares to estimate variance components. The use of projections makes the vector subspace generated by the model matrix to be decomposed into subspaces that are orthogonal each other. To partition the vector space by the model matrix stepwise procedure is used. It is shown that the suggested method is useful for obtaining Type I sum of squares requisite for the ANOVA method.

  • This paper deals with a method for intrablock anlaysis of balanced incomplete block designs on the basis of projections under the assumption of mixed effects model. It shows how to construct a model at each step by the stepwise procedure and discusses how to use projection for the analysis of intrablock. Projections are obtained in vector subspaces orthogonal to each other. So the estimates of the treatment effects are not affected by the block effects. The estimability of a parameter or a function of parameters is discussed and eigenvectors are dealt for the construction of estimable functions.

  • One Important problem in a cancer microarray study is to identify a set of genes from which a molecular prognostic indicator can be developed. In parallel with this problem is to validate the chosen set of genes. We develop in this note a K-fold cross validation procedure by combining a 'pre-validation' technique and a bootstrap resampling procedure in the Cox regression . The pre-validation technique predicts the microarray predictor of a case without having seen the true class level of the case. It was suggested by Tibshirani and Efron (2002) to avoid the possible over-fitting in the regression in which a microarray based predictor is employed. The bootstrap resampling procedure for the Cox regression was proposed by Sauerbrei and Schumacher (1992) as a means of overcoming the instability of a stepwise selection procedure. We apply this K-fold cross validation to the microarray data of 92 gastric cancers of which the experiment was conducted at Cancer Metastasis Research Center, Yonsei University. We also share some of our experience on the 'false positive' result due to the information leak.

  • This paper deals with an estimation procedure of variance components in a mixed effects model by projections. Projections are used to obtain sums of squares instead of using reductions in sums of squares due to fitting both the assumed model and sub-models in the fitting constants method. A projection matrix can be obtained for the residual model at each step by a stepwise procedure to test the hypotheses. A weighted least squares method is used for the estimation of fixed effects. Satterthwaite's approximation is done for the confidence intervals for variance components.

  • Milt of the catfish was stripped into immobilizing solution containing 175 mM NaCl and 30 mM Tris at pH 7.8 and was successfully cryopreserved after a stepwise freezing procedure. After stepwise thawing, motility of spermatozoa was slightly lower than that of fresh sperm. Batches of 40-80 eggs were fertilized with cryopreserved spermatozoa, after thawing and activation in solution containing 50 mM NaCl, 20 mM Tris and HCl at pH 7.8; this resulted in 62.2% fertilization success, compared to 70.6 % with fresh sperm.

  • Database summarization is the procedure to obtain generalized and representative descriptions expressing the content of a large amount of database at a glance. We present a top-down summary refinement procedure to discover database summaries. The procedure exploits attribute concept hierarchies that represent ISA relationships among domain concepts. It begins with the most generalized summary and proceeds to find more specialized ones by stepwise refinements. This top-down paradigm reveals at least two important advantages compared to the previous bottom-up methods. Firstly, it provides a natural way of reflecting the user's own discovery preference interactively. Secondly, it does not produce too large intermediate result that makes it hard for the bottom-up approach to be applied in practical environment. The proposed procedure can also be easily extended for distributed databases. Information content measure of a database summary is derived in order to identify more informative summaries among the discovered results.

  • The suitability of BMPI (2-bromo-N-methyl pyridinium iodide) for solid-phase peptide synthesis was investigated. The coupling rate of BMPI/HOBT procedure. BMPI/HOBT was superior to DCC/HOBT couplings using the solid-phase peptide bond formation proceeded to a greater degree of completion than DCC/HOBT method did. Double couplings with 2 equiv. of Bocamino acids and 1.5 equiv. of BMPI and $NEt_3$ and 2 equiv. of HOBT in DMF/MC (1:1 v/v) gave the best result for the preparation of a model compound. Stepwise solid phase peptide synthesis using BMPI/HOBT procedure was successfully utilized for the preparation of $(D-Ala)^2$-dynorphine A. BMPI/HOBT procedure for the synthesis of $(D-Ala)^2$-dynorphine gave better yield (20%) than DCC/HOBT procedure did.

  • Objectives: The main purpose of this study was to compare influencing factors on depression between male and female students at the high school. Methods: The self-administered questionnaire survey was carried out on a convenience sample of 403 high school students. The data analysis procedure included frequency, ${\chi}^2$ test, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression using depression as the dependent variable. Results: There was a significant gender difference in depressive symptoms; the mean depression score of female students was higher than that of male students. Stepwise multiple regression analysis for depression revealed that the most powerful predictors (34%) were powerlessness and self-esteem for male students. On the other hand, the factors such as self-esteem, mother's occupation, and family fucntion were the most significant predictors (50%) for female students. Conclusion: The necessity of an intervention considering gender difference in high school students so as to prevent the occurrence of depression was suggested.

  • This paper describes the minimum cost expansion planning which is based on the economical aspect under the various conditions on the power system expansion planning. It presents not only linear cost characteristics analysis but also stepwise cost characteristics analysis which satisfies practical condition in the power system. The latter analysis must be handled by integer programming (IP), because the relation between the cost and the capacity has stepwise characteristics. In order to proceed the latter analysis, the solving procedure is illustrated in detais by using branch and bound method which includes the network flow theory and maximum flow-minimum cut theorem.
