  • Microstructural characteristics such as hydrates and porosity greatly influence the development of concrete strength. In this study, a strength estimation model for early-age concrete considerig, the microstructural characteristics was proposed, which considers the effects of both an increment of degree of hydration and capillary porosity on a strength increment. Hydration modeling and compressive strength test with curing temperature and curing ages were carried out. By comparing test results with estimated strength, it is found that the strength estimation model can estimate compressive strength of early-age concrete with curing ages and curing temperature within a margin of error.

  • Understanding the strength characteristics of model ice is an important issue for model testing in an ice model basin to estimate the ship performance in ice. In particular, the mechanical properties of the model ice including elastic modulus, flexural strength and compressive strength are key consideration factors. In order to understand the characteristics of the model ice during warm-up phase at KRISO's ice model basin, the strength properties are tested in this study. The infinite plate-bending method, in-situ cantilever beam test and ex-situ uniaxial compressive test are conducted to determine the strength properties of model ice. The strength characteristics of the model ice are then analyzed in terms of the warm-up phase and seasonality. These results could be valuable to quality control of the model ice characteristics in KRISO's ice model basin and to better understand the variations in strength properties during the ice model tests.

  • The long-term durability characteristics of high-early-strength concrete were assessed. The effect of long-term durability characteristics of high-early-strength concrete were investigated. In experiment, two different types of fiber were adopted for improvement of durability. High-early-strength fiber reinforced concretes using regulated-set cements are compared with high-early-strength concrete without fiber. The durability performance of the laboratory-cured high-early-strength concrete specimens was determined by conducting an accelerated chloride permeability, abrasion resistance, freeze-thaw, surface deicer salt scaling and wet-dry repetition test. The results indicated that incorporation of fibers enhance durability performance.

  • Recently, as architectural concrete structures become high-rise and megastructured, concrete become high-strengthened and, by ensuring products of more stability, air compression and rationalization of construction are required. In general, product management test of precast concrete member, specimen for management cured in the same condition with precast concrete member is substitutively used for strength test. However, large cross-sectional precast concrete members such as columns show large temperature increase in manufacturing process not only by external heating but also by concrete itself's hydration heating. Therefore, it is expected that specimen for management to predict strength and compression strength of precast concrete member shows different temperature history and strength characteristics. Concerning this, in order to suggest temperature history and strength characteristics of high strength mass concrete suitable for precast concrete application, this study comprises the inclusive investigations on the relations between management specimen with similar temperature history and core strength, and the strength characteristics per member cross-section dimensional value and per water-bonding material ratio value.

  • In this study, it is investigated that sheet characteristics of high strength steel sheets and effect of springback. High strength steel sheets has got attention in automobile industry of high strength and high formability. Springback is a common phenomenon in sheet metal forming, caused by the elastic recovery of the internal stresses after removal of the tooling. However, the information in deformation behavior of high strength steel sheets, including bending and sheet characteristics and springback, is not enough until now. In this research, the V-bending experiment and analysis have been done to obtain the information of springback of high strength steel sheets. Tensile test for high strength steel sheets was done to got tensile properties of elastic modulus and flow stress of the material. It analyzed springback according to the sheet characteristics with using roll-forming model. FE-Simulation used DEFORM-$3D^{TM}$.

  • Welded joint generally has heterogeneity of strength, material, and fracture toughness and it is important to understand the characteristics of material strength and fracture of welded joint considering heterogeneous effect. Characteristics of strength and fracture of an undermatched joint under dynamic loading was studied by round-bar tension tests and thermal elastic-plastic analyses in this paper. The strength and fracture of the undermatched joints should be evaluated based on the effects of the strain rate and the temperature including temperature rise during the dynamic loading. The differences of fracture characteristics like such as ductile-to-brittle transition behavior are well precisely explained from the stress-strain distribution obtained by numerical analysis.

  • A series of experiments were performed to investigate the strength characteristics of concrete which contain air cooled blast-furnace slag as coarse aggregate. The slag is a by product of GISC. The experimental conditions are varied with three different W/C(45%, 50%, 55%) and the weight of water and S/a are constant. The strength properties of the concrete at 7days, 28days, 90days are examined. Also the same strength properties are examined for the normal concrete which contain river gravel and crushed stone respectively as coarse aggregate. As the comparison results of the strength properties, it was found that the compressive strength development of concrete containing blast-furnace slag is better than that of concrete using river gravel at early age, however this is adversely at long-term age, and the tensile and flexural strength of the concrete were not nearly affected by water-cement ratio.

  • In this study, ultimate strength characteristics of clamped sandwich panels with metal faces and an elastic isotropic core under combined in-plane compression and lateral pressure loads are investigated to verify the applicability of the ultimate strength design formula for ship structures. Alternative elastomer-cored steel sandwich panels are selected instead of the conventional bottom stiffened panels for a Suezmax-class tanker and then the ultimate strength characteristics of the selected sandwich panels are examined by using nonlinear finite element analysis. The change in the ultimate strength characteristics due to the change in the thickness of the face plate and core as well as the amplitude of lateral pressure are summarized and compared with the results obtained by using the ultimate strength design formula and nonlinear finite element analysis. The insights and conclusions developed in the present study will be useful for the design and development of applications for sandwich panels in double hull tanker structures.

  • The use of high strength steels are gradually increasing to reduce the weight of automobile to improve the environmental problems and collision safety. To encounter the traditional disadvantages of high strength steels like as a poor formability and high springback, hot press forming has been developed. By this method, the strength of steel sheet is increased about three times of original one through die quenching process. In order to the design of hot press forming tools by using numerical simulation, the knowledge of mechanical and microstructural characteristics are required. This study show the mechanical and microstructural characteristics of a high strength boron-alloyed steel according to the various quenching conditions.
