  • Graphene oxide (GO)/carboxylated styrene-butadiene rubber (XSBR) nanocomposites with various contents of GO were prepared by a latex compounding method. It has been confirmed that the functional groups of GO and the hydrogen bonds between GO and XSBR are existed. It can be seen that the scorch time ($t_{s2}$), which is the measurement of incipient vulcanization of rubber, showed a delay after the addition of GO. Field emission scanning electron microscopy was employed to confirm the uniform dispersion of filler in the matrix. Indeed, with increasing fillers loading, the torque, tensile strength, thermal stability and crosslink density of obtained nanocomposites were improved. These results were correlated to the better dispersion of fillers through the rubber matrix.

  • Polymerization of carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex takes longer time than that of acrylic emulsion due to delocalization of radical in butadiene unit having conjugated double bond. A latex stability is the most important properties owing to use intact without separating polymer from base latex. For reducing polymerization time without decreasing any properties of latex, carbon tetra-chloride which has been used as the most popular chain transfer agent was replaced to combination of tert-dodecylmercaptane and ${\alpha}$-methylstyrene dimer. The replacement yielded reducement or 2 hr in polymerization time. In the increment step, charge amount of acrylic acid was limited to 0.3 part to restrain viscosity enhancement. Just after initial step, addition of 0.1 part acrylamide prevent polymer chain from diffusing between two region followed by giving hardness and final good adhesive force to latex particles.

  • Chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) -bamboo charcoal/silica (CS-PVA-BC/SI) hybrid fillers with compatibilized styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composites were fabricated by the interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) method. The structure and composition of the composite samples were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The viscoelastic behaviors of the rubber composites and their vulcanizates were explored using a rubber processing analyzer (RPA) in the rheometer, strain sweep and temperature sweep modes. The storage and loss moduli of SBR increased significantly with the incorporation of different hybrid fillers, which was attributed to the formation of an interphase between the hybrid fillers and rubber matrix, and the effective dispersion of the hybrid fillers. The mechanical properties (hardness, tensile strength, oxygen transmission rate, and swelling rate) of the composite samples were characterized in detail. From the results of the mechanical test, it was found that BC-CS-PVA0SBR had the best mechanical properties. Therefore, the BC-CS-PVA hybrid filler provided the best reinforcement effects for the SBR latex in this research.

  • In this study, we observed the effect of carboxylated SBR latex and zinc oxide on styrene-butadiene-styrene( SBS) composites for improving abrasion and debris. SBS composite, which added only silica, showed poor mechanical properties, NBS abrasion, and debris, caused by strong filler-filler interaction of silica. In case of adding carboxylated SBR latex, mechanical properties, NBS abrasion and debris of SBS composite were improved. Because of carboxyl group of carboxylated SBR latex interacted with silanol group of silica. Both carboxylated SBR latex and zinc oxide were added, SBS composite showed highest mechanical properties, NBS abrasion, and debris by forming ion cluster between carboxylated SBR latex and zinc oxide. By FT-IR analysis, ion clusters were confirmed that observed zinc carboxylated group stretch peak at $1550{\sim}1650cm^{-1}$ range. SBS composite, SC-4, showed excellent mechanical properties ; tensile strength $156kgf/cm^2$, elongation 936%, tear strength 59.4kgf/cm ; and excellent abrasion characteristics ; NBS abrasion 338%. Also, debris of SC-4 was minimized and showed wave-shape in fracture surface.

  • Recently, the disposal of used vehicle tires is a big social problem because the amount of used vehicle tires has been increased with development of' automobile industry. Many researches have been made on the recycling of used vehicle tires in the various fields of industry as well as construction industry. When the crumb rubber made of vehicle tires is mixed in cement concrete and mortar, it is indicated that the adhesive strength of interface between the crumb rubber and cement hydrates is very low. The purpose of this study is to improve the fundamental properties by increasing of the adhesion strength of styrene-butadiene rubber(SF3R) latex coated crumb rubber in ; cement mortar. SBR-modified mortar using crumb rubber is also tested as the same method. From the test results, the cement mortar using SBR latex coated crumb rubber have a good fundamental properties compared with that using uncoated crumb rubber. The mechanical properties of SBR-modified mortar using crumb rubber with polymer-cement ratios of 10% are also improved.

  • The effects of slag content and polymer-binder ratio on the strength properties of the polymer-modified concretes using ground granulated blast-furnace slag and a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) latex are examined. As a result, the compressive, tensile and flexural strengths of the SBR-modified concretes using slag increase with increasing polymer-binder ratio and slag content, and maximized at a slag content of 40 %. In particular, the SBR-modified concretes with a slag content of 40 % provide approximately two times higher tensile and flexural strengths than unmodified concretes. Such high strength development is attributed to the high tensile strength of SBR polymer and the improved bond between cement hydrates and aggregates because of the addition of SBR latex.

  • In this study, the anionic emulsified asphalt was prepared by dispersing asphalt particles evenly into water with combination of anionic and nonionic surfactants. Effects of NaOH and $CaCl_2$ on the phase stability of the emulsified asphalt were also investigated through zeta potential value and rheology behavior; the emulsified asphalt added with NaOH and $CaCl_2$ showed higher zeta potential value than that the asphalt with addition of only anionic and nonionic surfactants. In addition, with regard to shear thinning behaviors, it was found that pH of the emulsified anionic asphalt and $Ca^{2+}$, counter ion, affected the phase stability. SBR (styrene-butadiene-rubber) latex, EPD (water dispersed Epoxy), PU (polyurethane) and RI-10S, SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene)-based property improvement additive, were used and studied to enhance the adhesion properties with the aggregates. RI-10S, however, was found to be only compatible with the anionic emulsified asphalt; the coating rate, adhesion and compression strength were increased with the RI-10S content.

  • Styrene-butadiene Rubber (SBR) Latex composites, incorporated with cellulose/starch-silica hybrids synthesized by gel-adsorption method, were filled into rubber by the latex compounding method. The structure morphology, mechanical properties, and thermodynamic properties of gel-silica hybrids were characterized. The states of hybrids which used as fillers were also characterized by SEM. As the fillers ratio increased, the difference for storage modulus of samples had been morphology by rubber process analyzer (RPA). Then, as more fillers ratio was filled into the matrix, the best tensile strength result, and the largest modulus value were also proved by UTM and RPA. As for thermal stability, increase in the ratio of fillers led to higher initial decomposition temperature, which was also proved by TGA. The swelling ratio of samples has also been characterized. From the results of all the tests, cellulose-silica hybrid showed the best results as a filler, and the best filling ratio of this hybrid is about 10 phr, which has the best storage modulus and great tensile strength.
