There are two types of survivability. We find the characteristics of them for networks. And using the dual homing, we analysis the routing cost and link cost. Also we propose the cost-efficient heuristic design method of network topology in order to use survivability. By design samples, we analysis the cost efficiency and show that the new design method can be used to design network topology for survivability easily.
Mines, torpedoes and improvised explosive devices (IED) pose a serious threat to the survivability of naval combatants. Inasmuch, a major goal in the design of modern combatant ships has been to eliminate or at least reduce the devastating damage caused by underwater explosion events. Even though there has been extensive research performed on the various underwater explosion phenomena and their associated effects, effective shock testing and shock proofing strategies for naval ship systems have proven to be illusive. Through the use of modeling and simulation (M&S), live fire test and evaluation (LFT&E) and laboratory testing, general guidelines for the shock hardening of shipboard equipment and systems have been developed. In this paper, current aspect of ship survivability has been addressed and future direction is discussed.

In this paper, we propose a framework of Transmission Control Protocol with Software Rejuvenation methodology, which is applicable for network system survivability. This method is utilized to improve the survivability because it can limit the damage caused by successful attacks. The main objectives are to detect intrusions in real time, to characterize attacks, and to survive in face of attacks. To counter act the attacks' attempts or intrusions, we perform the Software Rejuvenation methods such as killing the intruders' processes in their tracks, halting abuse before it happens, shutting down unauthorized connection, and responding and restarting in real time. These slogans will really frustrate and deter the attacks, as the attacker can't make their progress. This is the way of survivability to maximize the deterrence against an attack in the target environment. We address a framework to model and analyze the critical intrusion tolerance problems ahead of intrusion detection on Transmission Control Protocol (TCP).

Ship damage due to maritime casualties lead to marine pollution, loss of life and properties. The maritime casualties come from the rough sea and bad weather condition generally. Therefore the large-scaled casualties will be derived from loss of structural strength and stability due to the progressive flooding and enlargement of damage by the effect of wave and wind. The improvement of damage survivability is very important in maritime safety This paper described the damage survivability assessment system which can be evaluate and improve the ship safety in consideration of loading, sea and damage condition. The components of the system and decision criteria for damage stability and structural safety is established. The ship modeler and behavior analysis program in wave is developed. Finally further research work is also discussed.
The capability to provide the network service must survive even if a significant network system element is disrupted. To sustain the network service under the system failure, network survivability mechanisms minimizing the impact of failures are needed. Also, since the mobile network has its unique characteristic, the survivability scheme for the vulnerability of the mobile network is required. This paper proposes a survivability scheme to support the reliable service of the wireless access point level (BS-base station system). By the survivability scheme, the mobile network can use an overlap BS of the cellular network architecture after a BS system failure. We analyze the performance of the proposed scheme using Markov model. Also, a computer simulation is used for the scheme analysis. The proposed scheme shows that the service of the mobile network can be provided under the BS system failure.

Survivability of the general purpose warhead during the target impact was studied. We first simulated the penetration phenomena and temporarily defined the survivability of the warhead at the impact situation. Next we launched the warhead projectiles by using Counter Mass Gun(CMG) system against the simulated specific steel target. The recovered warheads were carefully investigated and the penetration behaviors were analyzed. As a result the warhead can be hardened efficiently to enhance the survivability with the help of CMG test & analysis.

Network virtualization has been regarded as a core attribute of the Future Internet. In a network virtualization environment (NVE), multiple heterogeneous virtual networks can coexist on a shared substrate network. Thus, a substrate network failure may affect multiple virtual networks. In this case, it is increasingly critical to provide survivability for the virtual networks against the substrate network failures. Previous research focused on mechanisms that ensure the resilience of the virtual network. However, the resource efficiency is still important to make the mapping scheme practical. In this paper, we study the survivable virtual network embedding mechanisms against substrate link and node failure from the perspective of improving the resource efficiency. For substrate link survivability, we propose a load-balancing and re-configuration strategy to improve the acceptance ratio and bandwidth utilization ratio. For substrate node survivability, we develop a minimum cost heuristic based on a divided network model and a backup resource cost model, which can both satisfy the location constraints of virtual node and increase the sharing degree of the backup resources. Simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the solutions. The proposed load balancing and re-configuration strategy for substrate link survivability outperforms other approaches in terms of acceptance ratio and bandwidth utilization ratio. And the proposed minimum cost heuristic for substrate node survivability gets a good performance in term of acceptance ratio.

As the survivability of an aircraft in the battlefield becomes a critical issue, there is a growing need to improve the survivability of the aircraft. In this study, the survivability of an UCAV associated with plume IR signature was investigated. In order to analyze the survivability of the aircraft, the lock-on range and the lethal envelope, defined as the IR detection distance of the aircraft and the range of shooting down by the missile, respectively, were first introduced. Further, a method to calculate the lethal envelope for the scenario of surface-to-air missiles including the vertical plane was developed. The study confirmed that the red zone of an UCAV shows a substantial difference in the zone size as well as the characteristics in the upward and downward directions.
The popularization of high-speed networks and the innovation of high-performance hardware/servers have enlarged the role of large-scale, highly distributed IT infrastructure. Though many criteria on the assessment of IT infrastructure can be considered, the survivability assessment is treated as the most important one due to the essential role as an infrastructure. While assessing the survivability of some given IT infrastructures, we can not only choose the best one among them but also improve their survivability by modifying their structure and security policies. In this paper, we propose a DMKB-based assessment system on the survivability of IT infrastructures, where DMKB is a kind of database which provides the known vulnerabilities and defense mechanism for many system components.

Recent years have witnessed a dramatic increase in topology research of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) where both energy consumption and survivability need careful consideration. To balance energy consumption and ensure survivability against both random failures and deliberate attacks, we resort to complex network theory and propose an energy-aware preferential attachment (EPA) model to generate a robust topology for WSNs. In the proposed model, by taking the transmission range and energy consumption of the sensor nodes into account, we combine the characters of Erdős -Rényi (ER) model and Barabasi-Albert (BA) model in this new model and introduce tunable coefficients for balancing connectivity, energy consumption, and survivability. The correctness of our theoretic analysis is verified by simulation results. We find that the topology of WSNs built by EPA model is asymptotically power-law and can have different characters in connectivity, energy consumption, and survivability by using different coefficients. This model can significantly improve energy efficiency as well as enhance network survivability by changing coefficients according to the requirement of the real environment where WSNs deployed and therefore lead to a crucial improvement of network performance.
