  • Since the Fukushima nuclear accident, several researchers are extensively studying the effect of torsion on the piping systems In nuclear power plants. Piping installations in power plants with a circumferential crack can be operated under combined loading conditions such as bending and torsion. ASME Code provides flaw evaluations for fully plastic fractures using limit load criteria for the structural integrity of the cracked pipes. According to the recent version of Code, combined loadings are provided only for the membrane and bending. Even though actual operating conditions have torsion loading, the methodology for evaluating torsion load is not established. This paper provides the results of limit load analyses by using finite element models for circumferentially cracked pipes under pure bending, pure torsion, and combined bending and torsion with tension. Theoretical limit load solutions based on net-section fully plastic criteria are suggested and verified with the results of finite element analyses.

  • In this paper, we study the tracking performance of a torsion disk system where the plant is required to track a triangular-type command signal with a small steady state error and delay. We investigate the tracking performance of the traditional inner/outer loop approach and underline its limitations in high performance applications. We then design a more advanced controller using the mixed sensitivity robust control approach and show that the tracking performance of the system can be improved substantially. The success of the design, even for the case of lightly damped plants such as the one considered in this paper, is largely the result of the proper weights selection used in the mixed sensitivity design. The main contribution of this paper is, therefore, the development of design guidelines for the weights selection when accurate tracking of periodic reference signals are desired.

  • Realistic containment analyses for large LOCA using a merged torsion of RELAP5/CONTEMPT4 are conducted. Analyzed are Generic LOCA with respect to the mass and energy releases from the RCS and containment pressure and temperature behaviors. The break locations considered are the double-ended guillotine breaks at the RCP discharge and hot legs for UCN 3&4 plants. For discharge leg break. the predicted containment pressure and temperature reach a peak during blowdown phase, thereafter the pressure and temperature decrease gradually without the second reflood peak. For the hot leg break it is found that the bypass break flow through the broken steam generator-during post-blowdown is negligibly small so that the containment atmosphere is not pressurized after the end of blowdown.

  • The sudden death syndrome has been encountered in Korean native cattle in a small island village of Yeochun, Chonnam since 1984. In an effort to diagnose the causes of the condition, 10 calves were purchased and shipped to the village to be reared conventionally. During the period of April 1988 through March 1989 the animals were clinically examined every month, samples of blood and feces collected and examined. Soils, plants and water samples were analysed, and necropsy was performed on two calves which died during the period. No abnormalities were found by clinical examination. Soil, plant and water analysis did not reveal any abnormalities which could be related to sudden death. One of the 2 dead calves was fallen and suffocated to death after the right hock was tied by rein. The other had a torsion In jejunum after plowing. Epidemiological examination revealed that two calves of one farmer died in one day from bloat. Authors explained the results and asked the people in the island to improve management of the animals, and no more sudden death occurred for 2 years.

  • CP (Commercially Pure) titanium has been widely used in various industries such as in energy plants and bio-materials because of an excellent corrosion resistance and its non-toxicity to the human body. But there are limitations for usage as structural materials due to low strength. The tensile properties of CP titanium could be improved by microstructure refinement such as in a SPD (Severe Plastic Deformation) process. However, high strengthening of CP titanium wire is impossible by SPD processes like ECAP (Equal Channel Angular Pressing), HPT (High-Pressure Torsion), and the ARB (Accumulative Roll Bonding) process. The study purposes are to increase the strength of CP titanium wire by optimization of the cold drawing process and the harmonization with mechanical properties by heat treatments for the next forming process. The optimization process was investigated with regard to the design of drawing dies and the reduction ratio of cross sections. The elongations of high strength CP titanium were controlled by heat treatment.
