  • This paper presents a new, effective torsional constant for thin-waled open beams under concentrated and uniformly distributed torques. The proposed constant can be used directly, instead of the St. Venant torsional constant, for any generic comemrcial finite-element program, without modifying the algorithm. The derived torsional constant accounts for both the pure torsion and the warping torsion, and is equal to the St. Venant torsion constant times a correction factor. It is also shown, in the case of the St. Venant torsion, that the derived constant is identical to the torsional constant. The derived effective torsional constant is different from the one given by Elhelbawey et al. The pure torsional shear stress, the warping shear stress, and the warping normal stress were also determine d, using the maximum twisting angle. The accuracy of the proposed torsional constant was validated by comparing the numerical results with the closed-form solutions or other numerical results available in the literature.

  • Resistance to lateral torsional buckling of steel I-girder (open section) is a very important design requirement. But, most studies of steel I-girder with corrugated webs were invested in shear behavior. Untill now, most studies about Lateral torsional buckling of I-girder with corrugated webs have been based on Lindner.J's study (Lateral torsional buckling of beamswith trapezoidally corrugated webs,1990). the study includes that the pure torsional constant of I-girder with corrugated webs $J_{cor}$ doesn't different from that of I-girder with flat webs. This paper pesents pure torsional constant of I-girder with corrugated webs by using finite element anaysis.

  • In this study, the equations of torsional and warping constants of a I-shaped plate girder with sine corrugated web are suggested. Because of geometric characteristics of the section, a I-shaped plate girder with corrugated web shows high out-of-plane stiffness, shear strength, and torsional stiffness. Torsional constant and warping constant definitely affect lateral-torsional buckling loads. Therefore, exact estimation of the sectional properties is quite important. But, it is difficult to estimate these properties by former methods. So, this study was focused on suggestion of the rational equations to calculate torsional and warping constants. In order to investigate the effects of geometric characteristics of sine-corrugated webs on torsional stiffness and warping torsional constant, finite element analyses for pure torsional behavior and warping torsional behavior of I-shaped plate girders were performed. By regression analyses of the analytical results, rational equations of the torsional constant and warping constant were suggested. Suggested equations for the properties were validated based on the analytical results of lateral-torsional buckling of simply supported I-shaped plate girder. By suggested equations, torsional and warping constants of I-shaped plate girders with a sine-corrugated web can be rationally estimated and more exact lateral-torsional buckling load can be simply calculated.

  • In diesel engines, it is inevitable that the torsional vibration is produced by the fluctuation of engine torque. Therefore, it is necessary to establish preventive measures to diminish the torsional vibration. The sleeve spring type damper is one of the preventive measures for reducing the torsional vibration. In this study, a closed form equation to predict spring constant of the sleeve spring and torsional characteristic of the torsional vibration damper was proposed to calculate stiffness of the damper and verified their availability through the finite element analysis. The theoretical values have a good agreement with the results obtained by the finite element analysis. The results obtained from the equation derived enable the designers in actual fields to be more efficient.

Therefore, it is necessary to establish preventive measures to diminish the torsional vibration. The sleeve spring type damper is one of the preventive measures for reducing the torsional vibration. In this study, the closed form equations to predict the spring constant of a sleeve spring and the torsional characteristics of the torsional vibration damper are proposed to calculate stiffness of the damper and verified their availability through the finite element analysis and experiments. And the stability of the sleeve spring torsional vibration damper is verified by analyzing the inner star and outer star, which are the core parts of the damper, and 2-roll bending process is proposed to manufacture sleeve spring. The program to calculate the initial radius including spring-back effect is developed, and the FEA method to analyze elasto-plastic problem was verified through analysis of 90$^{\circ}$bending process. The results of the analysis are in good agreements with those of the experiments. The newly proposed method can be used as an advanced technique that remarkably curtails cost of production and replaces the conventional forming.

  • In this paper, the authors formulate the sensitivity analysis algorithm for the natural frequency of a torsional shafting by expanding the transfer stiffness coefficient method. The basic concept of the present algorithm is based on the transfer of sensitivity stiffness coefficient, which is the derivative of stiffness coefficient with respect to design parameter, at every node from the first node to the last node in analytical model. The effectiveness of the present algorithm is confirmed by comparing the results of the sensitivity analysis and those of the reanalysis for the natural frequencies of a torsional shafting with a constant cross section. In numerical calculation, the design parameter is the diameter of the shaft element of the torsional shafting.

  • In this paper, the effect on the lateral and torsional behavior of ballastless railway plate girder bridge by the installation of the lower horizontal bracing has been reviewed. First of all, the most efficient lower bracing arrangement has been reviewed by comparing and examining the lateral displacement due to the train load, targeting analysis models with different arrangement types of lower bracing. Next, the research on torsional behavior of plate girder bridge with lower bracing has been conducted. In addition, the torsion constant from FEM analysis results has been compared with the torsion constant of a railroad plate girder bridge with a closed section by substituting the upper and lower horizontal bracing with equivalent thickness. Based on this comparison, the impact on the bridge span length and the cross section area of the lower bracing has been examined. Through this study, the curve graph related to lateral buckling moment and torsional constant ratio is presented and the range of plate girder bridge requiring torsional reinforcement is proposed.

  • The fluctuation of the engine torque appears to be the major source of the torsional vibration of the automotive driveline. The reduction of this torsional vibration has become a significant problem, due to an increase in the fluctuation of the torque of recent light weighted and high powered engines, along with the requirements of higher performance. The torsional vibration of the automotive driveline can be reduced by smoothing the fluctuation by adjusting the torsional characteristics of the clutch-disc. This paper presents an experimental and theoretical research on the clutch-disc torsional characteristics for the reduction of the torsional vibration at driving. The effects of clutch-damper on diminishing the torsional vibration were investigated experimentally. A dynamic model for the automotive driveline was developed, and the engine torque of the model were evaluated with experimental data. By executing a simulation using the model, it has become possible to obtain the clutch-disc torsional characteristics and the clutch-disc torsional characteristics for reducing the torsional vibration has been suggested. The results are as follows: (1) By exceuting simulations using nonlinear model of four degrees of freedom, a design technique to determine the clutch-disc torsional characteristics for reducing the torsional vibration at driving was developed. (2) The influence of barious torsional characteristics of the clutch has been studied in examining design parameters, which indicates that the domain to minimize the torsional vibration at driving depends on the characteristics of the clutch-damper, i. e., spring constant and hysteresis.

  • The evaluation of torsional effects on multistory buildings remains an open issue, despite considerable research efforts and numerous publications. In this study, a large number of multiple test structures are considered with normally distributed topological attributes, in order to quantify the statistically derived relationships between the torsional criteria and response parameters. The linear regression analysis results, depict that the center of twist and the ratio of torsion (ROT) index proved numerically to be the most reliable criteria for the prediction of the modal rotation and displacements, however the residuals distribution and R-squared derived for the ductility demands prediction, was not constant and low respectively. Thus, the assessment of the torsional parameters' contribution to the nonlinear structural response was investigated using artificial neural networks. Utilizing the connection weights approach, the Center of Strength, Torsional Stiffness and the Base Shear Torque curves were found to exhibit the highest impact numerically, while all the other torsional indices' contribution was investigated and quantified.
