  • Rainwater runoff has been identified as a significant source of contaminants having tremendous impact on the receiving aquatic environment. In the present study, trace element transport by the surface runoff in the predominantly urban catchment of Guwahati city, India was monitored with a view to determine the chemical denudation rates of the land surface. A number of trace metals, namely Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were measured in the runoff after 70 major rain events within the city. Cadmium was found to be the least abundant metal and Iron was the most abundant metal in the runoff. The results are interpreted on the basis of temporal and spatial variations in their concentrations. These variations are quite large in some of the events and reflect changes in the local environmental setting, differences in water utilization, variations in runoff volume, gradient and quality.

  • A solvent sublation was studied for the determination of trace Cd, Co, Cu and Ni in water samples. Ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (APDC) was used as a complexing agent. Experimental conditions such as pH of solution, amounts of APDC, the type and amount of surfactant, the type of solvent, etc. were optimized for the effective sublation of analytes. After metal-PDC complexes were formed in sample solutions of pH 2.5, the precipitate-type complexes were floated in a flotation cell with an aid of sodium lauryl sulfate as a surfactant and by bubbling with nitrogen gas. The precipitates were dissolved and separated into the surface layer of methyl iso-butyl ketone (MIBK). The analytes preconcentrated were determined by a graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry (GF-AAS). Extractability of each element was 88% for Cd(Ⅱ), 86% for Co(Ⅱ), 95% for Cu(Ⅱ) and 76% for Ni(Ⅱ), respectively. And this procedure was applied to the analysis of real samples. From the recoveries of more than 92%, it was concluded that this method could be simple and applicable for the determination of trace elements in various water samples of a large volume.

  • In order to evaluate the applicability of steel mill slag as a AMD (Acid Mine Drainage) neutralizer and to compare capacity of slag with that of limestone lab scale experiments were conducted. The fixed treatment experiments of AMD with slag and limestone separately for 24 hours under the stagnant condition showed that slag has higher capacity of pH increase and removal of Fe. Al and other trace elements. During the 10 days continuous step experiment the pH has been maintained and any decrease in the removal capacity of Fe and Al has not bun observed. In the trace element removal experiment slag showed higher capacity for removal of Ni, Co. Cu and Zn than limestone. The removal of trace element was more effective in AMD than in distilled water that the pH was adjusted to the same level of AMD (synthetic acid solution). It means that Fe and Al in AMD adsorbed trace elements during or after precipitation as oxide forms. In the size effect experiment, the slag of the smaller size with larger specific surface area exhibited higher capacity of pH increase and removal efficiencies of Fe. Al and other trace elements.

  • Selenium is an ultra trace essential element for the normal functioning body because of forming the active center of redox enzymes such as four kinds of glutathione peroxidases (GPx), thioredoxin reductase (TR) and 5'-iodothyronine deiodinase. However, the adequate range between deficient and excessive levels is very narrow. (omitted)

  • Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) of quartz is commonly applied to the age dating of Quaternary sediments. However, one of the issues is that some of the quartz samples are not suitable to OSL dating. Mineralogical analysis of the quartz samples with diverse OSL signals are required to strengthen the reliability and applicability of the OSL dating. We analysed the OSL signal characteristics of sedimentary quartz samples from diverse geological environments and measured their trace element contents using laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Quartz samples could be grouped into ones suitable to OSL dating and ones unsuitable on the basis of their OSL signal characteristics. The average trace element contents ranged from 73 to 260 ppm (Al), and from 61 to 248 ppm (Ti) with minor Li, Mg, Cr, Mn, and Fe contents below 40 ppm. We did not find any significant variation of trace element contents of quartz samples consistent with their OSL signal characteristics. This indicates unknown mineralogical factors causing diverse OSL characteristics which should be confirmed by further analysis of sufficient set of samples.

  • A total of 48 dust samples were collected from large shopping mall parking lots in Daegu metropolitan city in March 2011. Samples were sieved through a 100 ${\mu}m$ mesh and the concentration of 14 elements have been determined using by ICP after acid extraction. Results showed that Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na and V were affected by natural sources while Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were affected by anthropogenic sources. The measured values were remarkably higher in components from natural sources than in components from anthropogenic sources. Anthropogenic trace element concentrations of ground roof dust were higher than those of ground and underground indoor dust. A large percentage of trace elements came from natural sources rather than anthropogenic sources. The percentage composition of chemicals of ground roof dust were higher than those of ground and underground indoor dust. This study showed that investigated parking lots were rarely contaminated with hazardous heavy metals. The heavy metal pollution of ground roof were higher than those of ground and underground indoors. The correlation analysis among trace elements suggest that components in ground roof were more highly correlated than those in ground and underground indoor. Also anthropogenic trace element levels were well correlated with parking lot age and parking density.

  • Paved road dust emissions were investigated 14 times on 12 main roads in Seo-Cho Gu, Seoul, Korea by vehicle-based mobile sampling system(Road Dust Monitoring System) during September to December 2011. Also, fourteen heavy metals present in the dust samples were analyzed by ICP. ICP analysis showed that one of major source of the road dust would be urban construction. A large amount of silt was found, which might be originated mainly from building construction and open beds of trees. Trace element and pollution indices of heavy metals(Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) on the roads adjacent to the commercial area had higher concentrations than those on the roads adjacent to the construction and residential areas because of traffic density and heavy traffic.

  • This paper introduces a novel concept of the pulsed neutron facility (PNF) for maximizing the production of the thermal neutrons and its application to medical use based on prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) using Monte Carlo simulations. The PNF consists of a compact D-T neutron generator, a graphite pile, and a detection system using Cadmium telluride (CdTe) detector arrays. The configuration of fuel pins in the graphite monolith and the design and materials for the moderating layer were studied to optimize the thermal neutron yields. Biological samples - normal and cancerous breast tissues - including chlorine, a trace element, were used to investigate the sensitivity of the characteristic γ-rays by neutron-trace material interactions and the detector responses of multiple particles. Around 90 % of neutrons emitted from a deuterium-tritium (D-T) neutron generator thermalized as they passed through the graphite stockpile. The thermal neutrons captured the chlorines in the samples, then the characteristic γ-rays with specific energy levels of 6.12, 7.80 and 8.58 MeV were emitted. Since the concentration of chlorine in the cancerous tissue is twice that in the normal tissue, the count ratio of the characteristic g-rays of the cancerous tissue over the normal tissue is approximately 2.

  • A key element of the safety analysis is Loss of Coolant Analysis (LOCA) which must be performed using system thermal-hydraulic codes. These codes are extensively validated against separate effect and integral experiments. RELAP/SCDAPSIM is one such code that may be used to predict LBLOCA response in a CANDU reactor. The RD-14M experiment selected for the Best Estimate Plus Uncertainty study is a 44 mm (22.7%) inlet header break test with no Emergency Coolant Injection. This work has two objectives first is to simulate pipe break with RELAP and compare these results to those available from experiment and from comparable TRACE calculations. The second objective is to quantify uncertainty in the fuel element sheath (FES) temperature arising from model coefficient as well as input parameter uncertainties using Integrated Uncertainty Analysis package. RELAP calculated results are found to be in good agreement with those of TRACE and with those of experiments. The base case maximum FES temperature is 335.5 ℃ while that of 95% confidence 95th percentile is 407.41 ℃ for the first order Wilk's formula. The experimental measurements fall within the predicted band and the trends and sensitivities are similar to those reported for the TRACE code.
