  • Medial axis transformation is an important concept used in many engineering applications. We propose a new approach to medial axis transformation of 2D objects with smooth boundary. Our approach differs from the traditional ones: we construct the medial axis starting from the inside points, while the previous algorithms started from the boundary points. As a result, previous algorithms are highly sensitive to the small irregularities of the object's boundary curve, while our approach is robust.

  • Software architecture is increasingly being viewed as a key design in developing complex software systems, which largely affects the achievement of quality attributes. During the architecture-based software development, therefore, architectural transformation is needed to achieve quality attributes. Due to the variety of design alternatives and the poor predictability of the effects of the transformation, however, it is not easy to apply architectural transformation. Therefore, the method is needed to support architectural transformation through systematically analyzing the effects of applying various design alternatives to the architecture. This paper proposes an approach to support software architecture transformation. Based on architectural design decisions and the constraints on them included in the architecture, our approach defines a decision constraint graph representing the dependencies among architectural design decisions. Through using the decision constraint graph, architectural transformation can be systematically performed by understanding the effects of applying a transformation. While this work supports more understanding of applying architectural transformation, it also helps reconstruct a software architecture to improve the quality of the software.

  • Craniopharyngiomas exhibiting histologic malignancy are extremely rare. Herein, we report the case of a 26-year-old male patient who underwent suprasellar mass excision via an interhemispheric transcallosal approach. Histopathological examination indicated that the craniopharyngioma was of the adamantinomatous subtype. The patient received postoperative medical treatment for endocrine dysfunction and diabetes mellitus without radiation treatment. Two years after the operation, he presented with progressive visual disturbance and altered mentality. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a huge mass in the suprasellar cistern and third ventricle. He underwent a second operation via the same approach. The histopathological examination showed an adamantinomatous craniopharyngioma with sheets of solid proliferation in a spindled pattern, indicating malignant transformation. Malignant transformation of craniopharyngioma in the absence of radiation therapy has been reported in only five cases, including this one. We present a case of malignant transformation of craniopharyngioma with a brief review of relevant literature.

  • This paper develops an approach to fuse 1-meter resolution spatial panchromatic and 4-meter resolution multi-spectral IKONOS images. The approach is based on the characteristics of four-band wavelet transformation. The experiment shows that the fused images based on four-band wavelet method contain with not only high spatial resolution but also rich spectral characteristic.

  • This study validated the strategic alignment approach for e-Transformation of the traditional firm through the case analysis of e-Transformation practices performed in Pulmuone Inc., which had been managed and operated in a traditional mode. The e-Transformation approach identified in this study was focused upon the strategic alignment among 4 domains of business strategy, organizational infrastructure and processes, IT strategy, and IT infrastructure and processes, and was performed in the following process: 1) developing IT strategy to perform business strategy, 2) building IT infrastructure and processes to support IT strategy, and then 3) transforming organizational infrastructure and processes based on IT infrastructure and processes. The theoretical implication of this study is to empirically verify the Strategic Alignment Model hypothesized by Henderson and Venkatraman(1994) through the case analysis on e-Transformation of Korean traditional firm, and the practical contribution is to provide a feasible and effective guideline in carrying out e-Transformation of the typical traditional organization.

  • We propose robust control scheme for flexible joint manipulator in the presence of nonlinearity and mismatched uncertainty. The control is designed based on Lyapunov approach. The robust control which is based on the computed torque scheme and state transformation via implanted control is introduced. The design procedure starts with the construction of linearized subsystems via the computed torque method and then uses state transformation. With this approach we do not impose an upper-bound constraint on the inertia matrix in case it is known. Thus, this control can be applied to arbitrary manipulators. The resulting robust control guarantees practical stability for both the transformed system and the original system. The transformation is only based on the possible bound of uncertainty.

  • We generally use lower-dimensional transformations to convert high-dimensional sequences into low-dimensional points in similar sequence matching. These traditional transformations, however, show different characteristics in indexing performance by the type of time-series data. It means that the selection of lower-dimensional transformations makes a significant influence on the indexing performance in similar sequence matching. To solve this problem, in this paper we propose a hybrid approach that integrates multiple transformations and uses them in a single multidimensional index. We first propose a new notion of hybrid lower-dimensional transformation that exploits different lower-dimensional transformations for a sequence. We next define the hybrid distance to compute the distance between the transformed sequences. We then formally prove that the hybrid approach performs the similar sequence matching correctly. We also present the index building and the similar sequence matching algorithms that use the hybrid approach. Experimental results for various time-series data sets show that our hybrid approach outperforms the single transformation-based approach. These results indicate that the hybrid approach can be widely used for various time-series data with different characteristics.

  • In this paper, the CL surface transformation approach that inversely deforms the 3-axis tool path generated on the deformed CL surface to a 5-axis tool path is introduced. The proposed CL surface transformation approach can be used if the orientation of the cutter is predefined. The CL surface based 3-axis tool path generation algorithms that have been improved well can be applied to the f-axis tool path generation.

  • In this paper, we study the problem of transforming to normality. We propose to estimate the transformation parameter by minimizing a weighted squared distance between the empirical characteristic function of transformed data and the characteristic function of the normal distribution. Our approach also allows for other symmetric target characteristic functions. Asymptotics are established for a random sample selected from an unknown distribution. The proofs show that the weight function $t^{-2}$ needs to be modified to have thinner tails. We also propose the method to compute the influence function for M-equation taking the form of U-statistics. The influence function calculations and a small Monte Carlo simulation show that our estimates are less sensitive to a few outliers than the maximum likelihood estimates.

  • In this study, a simple approach for bending analysis of Reissner-Mindlin plates is presented using the four-node quadrilateral domain transformation based on discrete singular convolution. In the proposed approach, irregular physical domain is transformed into a rectangular domain by using the geometric coordinate transformation. The DSC procedures are then applied to discrete the governing equations and boundary conditions. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified by comparison with known solutions obtained by other numerical or analytical methods. Results for Reissner-Mindlin plates show a satisfactory agreement with the analytical and numerical solutions.
