  • The aim of this study is to propose a clustering method, called tree-structured clustering, by recursively partitioning continuous multivariate dat a based on overall $R^2$ criterion with a practical node-splitting decision rule. The clustering method produces easily interpretable clustering rules of tree types with the variable selection function. In numerical examples (Fisher's iris data and a Telecom case), we note several differences between tree-structured clustering and K-means clustering.

  • The aim of this study is to propose a tree-structured clustering for mixed data. We suggest a scaling method to reduce the variable selection bias among categorical variables. In numerical examples such as credit data, German credit data, we note several differences between tree-structured clustering and K-means clustering.

  • Tree-dependent component analysis (TCA) is a generalization of independent component analysis (ICA), the goal of which is to model the multivariate data by a linear transformation of latent variables, while latent variables fit by a tree-structured graphical model. In contrast to ICA, TCA allows dependent structure of latent variables and also consider non-spanning trees (forests). In this paper, we present a TCA-based method of clustering gene expression data. Empirical study with yeast cell cycle-related data, yeast metaboiic shift data, and yeast sporulation data, shows that TCA is more suitable for gene clustering, compared to principal component analysis (PCA) as well as ICA.

  • As the Internet is growing, the use of XML which is a standard of semi-structured document is increasing. Therefore, there are on going works about integration and retrieval of XML documents. However, the basis of efficient integration and retrieval of documents is to cluster XML documents with similar structure. The conventional XML clustering approaches use the hierarchical clustering algorithm that produces the demanded number of clusters through repeated merge, but it have some problems that it is difficult to compute the similarity between XML documents and it costs much time to compare similarity repeatedly. In order to address this problem, we use clustering algorithm for transactional data that is scale for large size of data. In this paper we use common structures from XML documents that don't have DTD or schema. In order to use common structures of XML document, we extract representative structures by decomposing the structure from a tree model expressing the XML document, and we perform clustering with the extracted structure. Besides, we show efficiency of proposed method by comparing and analyzing with the previous method.

  • The clustering method suggested in this paper produces clusters based on the 'rules of variables' by merging the 'training' and the identically structured reference data and then by filtering it to obtain the clusters of the 'training data' through the use of the 'tree classification model'. The reference dataset is generated by spatially contrasting it to the 'training data' through the 'reverse arcing' algorithm to effectively identify the clusters. The strength of this method is that it can be applied even to the mixture of continuous and discrete types of 'training data' and the performance of this algorithm is illustrated by applying it to the simulated data as well as to the actual data.
