This study is to find out general problems a n.0, ppeared in the management and utilization of these and dissertation and to suggest some recommendations, through the survey and analysis on the Korean university libraries. Questionnaires were sent to 109 university libraries which offer master's and doctoral degrees, during the period between March 7 and March 27, 1995. Responded questionnaires of 91 libraries (about 83%) were processed using SAS. The results of this survey can be summarized as follows: 1. Most of Korean university libraries have the collections of theses and dissertations ranging from less than 10,000 volumes (27 libraries ; 32.1%) ; 10,000 to 30,000 volumes (20 libraries ; 25.0%) ; to more than 80,000 volumes (16 libraries ; 19.0%). The largest collection was around 200,000 volumes. 2. In the management of them, 35 libraries (38.5%) were active in collecting them, but 56 libraries (61.5%) were not active, mainly for the shortage of manpower and the space problems. In 62.6% of libraries, they are arranged with the books. And 51.3% of libraries process them in less than one month. 46 libraries (52.9%) computerize their system, and among them 40 libraries (87%) establish their own databases. 3. The collections of theses and dissertations are called by various name, including periodical room, theses room, reference reading room etc. reaching to 15 kinds. 71 libraries (78.0%) adopt open system, and 17 libraries closed system ; and 2 libraries (3.2%) partial open system. 62 libraries (68.1%) arrange them in the order of call number, while 20 libraries (31.9%) by other criteria.

This study attempted to establish the role of university libraries for leisure reading by identifying the current status of university libraries about leisure reading, which is a part of the reading support service and by investigating and analyzing the university library librarian's percep tion of the necessity of leisure reading. To this end, a survey was conducte d on university libraries. As a result of the survey, 78% of university libraries were conducting leisure reading, and 72% of them provided separate space. Separate manpower was provided only in 30% of libraries, and book lists were provided mainly by best sellers. Regarding the need for leisure reading (4.28) and the role of university libraries (4.32), librarians responded that it was a necessary service for university libraries, and university library librarians that currently provide spaces and program s were more aware of the need.

This study explores Facebook use in Vietnamese academic libraries by analysing libraries' posts on their Facebook pages and library users' interaction with those posts. A total of 260 posts on four academic libraries' Facebook pages were examined using the content analysis method. The findings reveal that Facebook was mainly used to encourage reading and to transmit announcements. Most of the academic libraries published one post a week. The photo was the most frequent media type of libraries' posts and gained a higher level of interaction than other posts. According to the research results, the user engagement was low, and the user interaction with libraries' posts generally was in the form of reaction. The findings can help better understand Facebook use in Vietnamese academic libraries and may assist libraries in creating a plan for using Facebook more effectively.

The purpose of this study is (1) to ascertain the common trends In establishing the branch library of university libraries in Korea and (2) to Investigate Into Its effect upon the use of university libraries as a whole. In order to achieve this purpose. this study focused on the relationship of branch libraries with the size of library collections. the number of students, history of universities, the number of academic departments, the space of main libraries and the budget of the libraries. Seventy-three branch libraries established within the twenty-six university libraries were chosen for the first purpose of this study. In order to achieve this second purpose. 6 university libraries are chosen two libraries with six branch libraries. two libraries with three branch libraries. and two libraries without a branch library The number of visitors were counted at the doors of the six libraries at indifferent time periods.

This study comprehensively analyzed domestic and foreign literature related to the value and impact of libraries on education, social behavior and economic conditions, developed a survey to investigate the librarians' perception of the libraries' value and impact, and accordingly investigated the perception of librarians according to the types of libraries in which they worked, public versus university. The results showed that the impact is greatest on education and literacy with a mean score of 3.98, followed by their social impact with 3.67 and their economic impact with 3.46. When subordinate items were analyzed it was found that the librarians perceived that the role that libraries are playing in the education area is expanding and their impact on reading and literacy is becoming greater and greater. Libraries were viewed as essential elements for education and the education system. When the difference in perception related to the impact of libraries was compared by types of libraries, the librarians in public libraries tended to rate their facilities higher than the librarians working in universities on most of the items.

The purpose of the study is to provide the basic information for the improvement of university libraries in future. To acquire the basic information, the equipments and facilities, materials, personnels and budget elements of university are analyzed. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: 1. University outhorities primary concerned the establishment of universities rather than university libraries. 2. University libraries do not secure the facilities, materials and personnels sufficiently. 3. The realities of university libraries in Korea are very poor condition.

The expectation and the role for the university are rising due to the national competitiveness and change of environment in higher education in the knowledge based society, and the role to realize the effective lifelong study is also underlined in lifelong study society. And the social awareness is also diffused that the university should share the specialized substantial information resource with the community, and ensure the access right to knowledge and information to local inhabitant. Like this, the roll as an information center that the university can develop the local society as the component of the community according to the diffusion of lifelong study and the change of civic awareness. To check the open state of university libraries to community, this study surveyed and analyzed the open state of 4-year-course university libraries in Seoul and Gyoenggi region. On this base, this study emphasized that the university should open its libraries and positively offer the abundant specialized data of university libraries to the local residents. And this study suggested the way that the university libraries can cooperate connecting with the local public libraries and the school libraries as a positive service way of university libraries. Also this study accentuated that the university libraries should establish an open-door policy of its libraries and enlarge the service for the local residents by using the university conditions to maximum with the positive support of the university libraries of government and the university's bureaucracy.

Facebook is very popular among young people and especially university students. Therefore, Facebook is the most logical platform to be used by academic libraries for promotional purposes and reaching out to user communities. This study aims to measure the effectiveness of using Facebook in connecting with students in academic libraries. A questionnaire survey was conducted to collect research data from students at four Vietnamese universities. A total of 1,670 valid questionnaires were returned, and more than half of the respondents were females between the ages of 18 and 22 years. The survey results found that libraries' Facebook pages did not receive adequate attention and interaction from students. Besides that, the information needs of students and social media content in general affected student acceptance of libraries' Facebook pages. These factors are demonstrated by the great majority of students who used Facebook often for various purposes, but fewer accessed library pages and they were not actively engaged in library posts. Students were interested in the information they already tended to get from libraries and were optimistic about the quality of library posts. However, they still expected more diverse and attractive content from the libraries. The findings of this study can help libraries create a close connection with students by satisfying their needs and expectations on Facebook.

This study is to analyze the tea organization introduced lately to many university and college libraries in Korea. First, it investigates the background many libraries in Korea have introduced or consider to introduce the organization. And then it reanalyzes the concept, characteristics, and types of the team organization with a special regard to libraries. Finally, it investigates the current status of the organization in Korean university and college libraries based on some selected examples, and suggests some major anticipated problems and obstacles and possible actions to cope with them.

University libraries have been facing challenges to accomplish both roles of traditional libraries as physical places and virtual libraries which service electronic resources effectively. University libraries need to establish a strategic plan as a positive tool for designing the future of university libraries addressing threats and opportunities at the same time. This study suggested the core elements be involved in strategic plans of university libraries through comparatively analyzing the actual documents of strategic plans of academic libraries in America, England, Canada and Australia. These strategic plans were divided into formal elements and content elements. In addition, this study presented the latest strategic plans of academic libraries such as UMI. OULS, UBCL, and USL. As a result of research, this study provided the directions and basic materials in order to establish strategic planning at university libraries in Korea.
