Development of Electric Vehicle Crash Scenarios and Safety Testing Methods Considering Road Infrastructure (도로 인프라를 고려한 전기자동차 충돌안전 시험법 개발)

  • In this study, an analysis was conducted on internal and external factors related to fires in electric vehicles in order to improve the safety of electric vehicles against fire accidents. To conduct the analysis, field survey data conducted on actual electric vehicle fire accidents were used, and accident-related statistical data was used. Among them, as a result of analyzing the internal factors related to fire accidents in electric vehicles, it was confirmed that high-voltage batteries are an important factor in fire accidents caused by internal factors of electric vehicles. An analysis of external factors for fire accidents of electric vehicles was also conducted in this study. The largest number of electric vehicle accidents that occurred on public roads were mainly caused by physical external forces such as collisions. Therefore, strengthening the safety of this road infrastructure could be an additional solution to improve the fire safety of electric vehicles. As a result, based on car accident cases, two crash scenarios based on road infrastructure were derived, each of which simulates a high-speed frontal collision situation and a lower-end collision situation. Additionally, detailed test methods for these scenarios were developed.

  • In recent days, vehicles have become equipped with electric systems that assist and help drivers driving safe by reducing possible accidents. LDWS(Lane Departure Warning System) and LKAS(Lane Keeping Assistant System) are involved in assist systems, especially for lateral motion of vehicles. Sudden and inattentive lateral motion of vehicles due to drivers' fatigue, illness, inattention, and drowsiness are major causes of accidents in highway. LDWS and LKAS provide drivers with warnings or assisting power to reduce any possibilities of accidents. In order to prevent or minimize the possibilities of accidents, lateral motion control of vehicles has been introduced in this research. DGPS/RTK(Differential Global Positioning System/Real Time Kinematics) and GIS(Geographic Information System) have been used to obtain the current position of vehicles and decide when activate controlling lateral motion of vehicles. The presented lateral motion control has been validated with actual vehicle tests.

  • In the future, as autonomous vehicles become popular at home and abroad, the frequency of accidents involving autonomous vehicles is also expected to increase. In particular, when a fully autonomous vehicle is operated, various criminal/civil problems such as sexual violence, assault, and fraud between passengers may occur as well as the vehicle accident itself. In this case, forensics for accidents involving autonomous vehicles and accidents involving passengers in the vehicles are also about to change. This paper reviewed the types of security threats of autonomous vehicles, methods for maintaining the integrity of evidence data using blockchain technology, and research on digital forensics. Through this, it was possible to describe threats that would occur in autonomous vehicles using blockchain technology and forensic techniques for each type of accident in a scenario-type manner. Through this study, a block that helps forensics of self-driving vehicles before and after accidents by investigating forensic security technology of domestic and foreign websites to respond to vulnerabilities and attacks of autonomous vehicles, and research on block chain security of research institutes and information security companies. A chain method was proposed.

Analysis of Fire Accidents on Power Line for DC Electric Traction Vehicles (전기철도 전원계통에서의 화재 사고사례 분석)

  • This paper describes a cause of fire accidents on power system for DC electric traction vehicles. We investigated fire scene of power line for DC electric traction vehicles. From analysis results, the cause of fire on power line turned out line to ground fault between a feeder of electric power services(pantagraph) and DC electric traction vehicle roof. Fire accidents of DC electric traction vehicles be assumed that electric sparks had been produced between the pantagraph and the power line conductor by repetitively making contact and separation, maybe if some material like branches get in between connecting rod it make progress line to ground fault. ZnO arresters are widely used to protect DC electric traction vehicles against overvoltages caused by lightning or switching surges. However, the arresters are deteriorated by commercial frequency overvoltages and/or lightning one. Deteriorated arresters could lead power failures, such as line to ground fault by a thermal runaway resulting from the increases in leakage current even in a nominal power system voltage. The power failures, such as line to ground fault would be causative of the fire accidents.

A Study on the Safety of Passing-type Climbing Lanes in Expressways using C-G Method (비교그룹방법을 이용한 고속도로 추월차로형 오르막차로 안전성 연구)

  • PURPOSES : Climbing lanes on expressways managed by the Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC) have been hot potatoes due to conflicts between slow-moving vehicles such as trucks and other vehicles at the merging section as well as the less popularity with the slow-moving vehicles. In order to resolve such problems, KEC has altered existing climbing lanes to passing-type climbing lanes in 1999. The new type of climbing lanes showed an apparent improvement in mobility. For example, the speeds of vehicles using both climbing lane and other lanes improved a lot. However, there has been no clear evidence about improved safety. METHODS : This research effort was initiated to evaluate the safety of the new passing-type climbing lanes using the comparison-group(CG) method based on three-year-long traffic accident data sets before and after the change, respectively. RESULTS : The passing-type climbing lanes showed twice increased traffic accidents even though the traffic accidents on old type climbing lanes increased 1.1% during the same periods. In addition, in-depth study, the merging area of the passing-type climbing lanes was found out to be the weakest section where 43.8% traffic accidents out of total traffic accidents happened. It is noted that the merging area of the old type climbing showed only 25.0% traffic accidents. CONCLUSIONS : The new passing-type climbing lanes were found to be weak in terms of safety when compared with the old type climbing lanes. Especially, the merging area should be improved to reduce the risk of traffic conflicts between slow-moving vehicles and other vehicles.

An Analysis of Multiple-Vehicle Accidents on Freeways Using Multinomial Logit Model (다항로짓모형을 이용한 고속도로 다중추돌사고 특성 분석)

  • The aim of this study is to analyze effects of factors on the number of vehicles involved in traffic accidents on freeway sections. In previous studies about traffic accident severity, the analysis of accidents involving multiple vehicles was insufficient. However, multiple-vehicle accidents are likely to cause casualties and are the main reasons increasing accident duration and social costs. In this study, the number of vehicles involved in an accident was interpreted as the result of the accident, not as the cause of the accident, and the impacts of each accident factor were analyzed using a multinomial logit model. The results indicate that multiple-vehicle accidents are mainly related to following factors: nighttime, driver's faults, obstacles on the road, a downhill slope, heavy vehicles, and freeway mainline sections including tunnels and bridges.

A Study on the Relationship between Loading Work and Traffic Accidents (적재작업과 교통사고의 연관성에 관한 연구)

  • Ensuring the safe arrival of delivery cargo at its intended destination is of utmost importance. Truck drivers play a crucial role in guaranteeing the secure delivery of cargo without any mishaps. However, there are various factors that may lead to delayed arrival of trucks at their destination, such as late departures or prolonged loading operations. The timely departure of cargo transportation is contingent upon several variables, including the driver's experience, cargo volume, and loading time. If the transportation commencement is delayed, it may increase the risk of accidents due to an elevated operating speed. Consequently, we conducted a study to investigate the correlation between cargo loading time, cargo volume, driving experience, and the likelihood of accidents. Our findings indicate that both cargo volume and driver experience can impact the likelihood of vehicle accidents. Furthermore, all factors can have an interactive effect on the occurrence of accidents. However, extending the loading time may mitigate the impact on the likelihood of accidents.

  • Autonomous vehicles can significantly reduce accidents due to 'driver's carelessness', which occupies the majority of causes for traffic accidents, but they may fail to avoid traffic accidents due to unexpected situations, such as "trolley dilemma", vehicle defects and road defects. Therefore in situations Autonomous vehicles need to be made ethical choices. This study assumes that Autonomous vehicles can not avoid traffic accidents due to unexpected sink holes. In this situation, the traffic accident costs was analyzed for the ethical choices of Autonomous vehicles. In the process, Autonomous vehicles were made to choose one of three ethical choices : (1) Egoism with priority on passenger safety, (2) Deontology for minimizing human damages, (3) Utilitarianism with minimizing traffic accident costs. As a result of the analysis, egoism had the highest traffic accident costs, and deontology for minimizing human damages had the lowest traffic accident costs.

  • According to a characteristic analysis of traffic accidents of industrial vehicles (RTSA 2007), the occurrence rate and lethality per 10,000 vehicles is 6.7 times higher and 5.3 times higher than that of non-industrial vehicles respectively. For the recent 10 years, in contrast to the 1.5% decrease of the annual rate of entire traffic accidents, the accident rate of industrial vehicles have been increasing 2.0% on the annual average. For the recent 10 years, the accidents of a freight truck and bus have been steadily falling off. But, in the case of a taxi, it has constantly been rising 5.6%. In these situations, the countermeasures to decrease the accident rate are suggested by grasping the inclination of taxi drivers through Q analysis which is character and psychology analysis method.

Implementation of an Intelligent Automatic Notification System Based on Bluetooth Beacons and Smart Phones

  • In this study, we aim to implement an intelligent automatic notification system based on Bluetooth beacons and smartphones to prevent accidents caused by children being left in vehicles while commuting to school during summer or winter. This is a problem that is emerging as safety accidents occur owing to negligence in vehicles. Although teachers solutions, such as checking children's attendance, safety accidents occur freq uently every year. Because the continuous occurrence of safety accidents, parents' anxiety about accidents is increasing, and various accident prevention measures are being developed to solve this problem. However, these methods are difficult to implement as teachers have to manage a large number of children. To solve this problem, this study implements an intelligent automatic notification system based on Bluetooth beacons and smartphones. This notification system attaches a relatively low-power Bluetooth beacon to the child's belongings to recognize boarding and disembarking using the teacher's smartphone, and sends a message to the parent's smartphone.
