Laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of waste rubber shreds in leachate collection layer of engineered landfills. The study found that waste rubber shreds layer in combination with a gravel layer can be of potential use in landfill drainage system. To study the performance, conventional gravel along with waste rubber shreds were used in different combinations (with total layer thickness = 500 mm) as leachate collection media. For the laboratory study poly vinyl chloride (PVC) pipes were used. The size range of waste rubber shreds used were 25 mm to 75 mm in length and width = 10 to 20 mm. The gravel size used in the leachate collection media is 10 mm to 20 mm size. Performance study of 7 Test Cols. with different combinations of waste rubber shreds and gravel bed thickness were studied to find out the best combination. The study found that the Test Col.-3 having waste rubber shreds thickness = 200 mm and gravel layer thickness = 300 mm gave the best results in terms of percentage removal in various physicochemical parameters present in the leachate. Further to find the best size rubber shreds three more Test Cols - 8, 9 and 10 were constructed having the rubber shreds and gravel layer ratio same as that of Test Col.-3 but having rubber shreds width = 10 mm, 15 mm and 20 mm respectively. Based on the results obtained using Test Cols. 8, 9 and 10 the study found that smaller size rubber shreds gave bests results in terms of improvement in various leachate parameters.
Studies have proved that the mechanical properties of concrete, suddenly is dropped off with employing waste materials as replacements. The effectiveness of fibre addition on the structural stability of concrete has been indicated in recent investigations. There are different waste aggregates and fibres as plastic, rubber tire, coconut, and other natural wastes, which have been evaluated throughout the last decades. The fibres incorporation has a substantial effect on the properties of concrete mix subjected to different loading scenarios. This paper has reviewed different types of wastes and the effect of typical fibres including Poly Ethylene Terephthalate (PET), rubber tire, and waste glass. Furthermore, waste plastic and waste rubber has been especially studied in this review. Although concretes containing PET fibre revealed a reduction in compressive strength at low fibre fractions, using PET is resulted to micro-cracking decrement and increasing flexibility and flexural strength. Finally, according to the reviews, the conventional waste fibres are well-suited to mitigated time-induced damages of concrete and waste fibres and aggregates could be a reliable replacement for concrete.
This paper investigates the utilization of waste tyre crumb rubber as the fine aggregate in precast concrete Paving block (PCPB). PCPB's are generally preferred for city roads, pedestrian crosswalk, parking lots and bus terminals. The main aim of this paper is to evaluate the mechanical properties of wet cast PCPB containing waste tyre crumb rubber. The mechanical properties were investigated using a density, compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength tests at 7, 28 56 days according to the IS 15688:2006 and EN1338. The wet cast method was followed for producing PCPB samples. The fine aggregate (river sand) was replaced with waste tyre crumb in percentage of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% by volume. All the test results were compared with the conventional PCPB (Without rubber). The test results indicate its feasibility for incorporating waste tyre crumb rubber in the production of PCPB by the wet cast method.
Microbial treatment of the powdered waste tire was studied to recycle the waste tires. Chemoautotrophic acidophilic, iron-oxidizing bacterium was employed to unvulcanize the powdered tires. Biotreated rubber powder was compared to a untreated and a chemically treated powder. The results showed sulfur content of rubber powder(1.33%) were decreased to 1.22% by chemical treatment and 1.12% by microbial treatment for 20 days, 0.88%, for 30 days. One of the problems of the powdered utilization of the waste tires is that rubber powder leads to decrease mechanical properties when it is compounded with other virgin polymers. When tee biotreated powder was compounded with natural rubber, the mechanical properties were less decreased when untreated or chemically treated powder. Therefore, the microbial treatment can be one of useful methods to recycle the waste tire.
Waste tires are a significant problem with the increasing in number of automobiles. Therefore, many researches have been studied on this field. Recycling is the one of the popular method aspect to environmental and economical in the treatment methods of the waste tire, which loads that the reuse of scrap tire rubber has been a challenge in the past. However, it is not easy method to melt down and mold into new products because the in rubber is a cross-linked polymer. Most difficulty in recycling is the recycled product is not economic. Therefore, the goal of this study is to develop the high valuable products for reused waste tires. In this paper, we try to make an economic recycled technology using scrapped waste tires. This technology may applied for manufacturing the end products such as a rubber block and a ballast mat for high-speed train.
The powder utilization is the one of the best recycling methods for the waste tires. However, economic problem still exist. In order to overcome an economic problem the ground rubber particles are surface modified, which induced to the rubber particles that have good mechanical properties and higher compatibility. In this study, we investigated ultrasonic treatment and reduced rubber particle size. Results showed that sulfur cross-linkage network of the waste rubber is changed by the ultrasonic treatment.
The use of waste rubber in concrete can reduce natural aggregate consumption and improve some technical properties of concrete. Although there are several equations for estimating the mechanical properties of concrete containing waste rubber, limited numbers of machine learning-based models have been proposed to predict the mechanical properties of rubbercrete. In this study, an extensive database of the mechanical properties of rubbercrete was gathered from a comprehensive survey of the literature. To model the mechanical properties of rubbercrete, M5P tree and linear gene expression programming (LGEP) methods as two machine learning techniques were employed to achieve reliable mathematical equations. Two procedures of input variable selection were considered in this study. The crucial component ratios of rubbercrete and concrete age were assumed as the input variables in the first procedure. In contrast, the volumes of the coarse and fine waste rubber and the compressive strength of concrete without waste rubber were considered the second procedure of the input variables. The results show that the models obtained by LGEP are more accurate than those achieved by the M5P model tree and existing traditional equations. Besides, the volumes of the coarse and fine waste rubber and the compressive strength of concrete without waste rubber are better predictors of the mechanical properties of rubbercrete compared to the first procedure of input variable selection.
In this study, a new process was developed to develop the waste rubber material recycling system. Firstly, the blending of the reclaimed rubber/virgin rubber as a compounding technology was investigated in this study. Secondly, the removal of odor by using zeolite. Thirdly, the continuous crosslinking process technology was studied the technology can solve the environmentally harmful substances and economic problems. Based on this technology, we have started to develop application technologies such as floor mats and rubber sheets for forklifts, and will further study the environmentally conscious products in various ways. Our research will contribute to the recycling industry.
Mechanical properties of the commingled waste plastics filled with ground rubber tire were studied. To improve adhesion at the interface, trans-octylene rubber(TOR) was added. With increasing the rubber level, first, due to their inherent incompatibility, the tensile and the compressive strength decreased but tensile strain and impact strength increased. Then, as TOR added, the samples showed still the same strain but the tensile, impact, and compressive strength as well increased markedly Variation of the properties by addition of TOR seemed to be attributed to the dual character of TOR.
The effect and control of wood property of reconstituted composite panels for improved board properties by wood-waste materials and development of combination method for heterogeneous materials have been of interest to the wood science researchers. The purpose of this study is to consider the properties in relation to hot pressing conditions and to develope the optimum hot pressing condition with waste wood and waste tire for the manufacturing of composite boards. The study of composite boards for recycling of wood and waste tire is nothing up to the present. Physical and mechanical properties such as specific gravity, moisture content, swelling coefficient, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity in bending test were studied. The condition of 3-stage press time for the lowest moisture content of composite board was $4{\rightarrow}3{\rightarrow}3$ minutes. Specific gravity of composite panels was affected mainly by the amount of rubber chip. Because of the low rigidity and high elasticity in rubber chip, it is considered the composite panel was adequate material in the place of compression load, but not bending load. Therefore, it was concluded that a use of rubber-based wood composite panel is proper to the interior materials such as floor a room than exterior materials. From the test results, the most optimum hot pressing conditions were $4{\rightarrow}3{\rightarrow}3$ minutes for 3-stage press time and $45{\rightarrow}20{\rightarrow}5kg/cm^2$ for 3-stage press pressure. The rubber-based wood composite panel was very excellent in elasticity by combination of rubber chip in comparison with existing other wood-based materials. Therefore, it was considered that rubber-based wood composites can be applicable to every interior materials such as floor a room and will be expected to effective reuse and recycle of waste tires and wood-waste materials, and will be contribute to protection of environment pollution in earth.
