  • The objectives of this study are to select and analyze unpublished wedding dresses in the 19th century, to investigate the design characteristics and making techniques of Victorian wedding dresses, and to examine the correlation between the wedding dress style and the fashion style in those days and the influence of the wedding dress style on contemporary's styles. The materials of this study were 9 wedding dresses owned by the Historical Costume and Textile Collection at the University of Connecticut in USA. The dresses were made during the mid and late Victorian Age. As for silhouette, the bustle style was popular in the 1870s and 1880s, and the hourglass style in the 1890s, and different from contemporary dresses there were no big differences in structural pattern and details between ordinary dresses and wedding dresses. In addition, colored wedding dresses were used until the mid and late Victorian Age, but since the wedding ceremony of Queen Victoria in 1840, white wedding dress was widely accepted and settled as the tradition of today's wedding dresses. While the Western dress style had been basically a one piece style, there appeared simple two piece designs in which the upper garment was separated from the lower one, from the mid Victorian Age. This is considered the reflection of those days' pragmatic social trend in dress style. It seems around 1875 when asymmetric design was first introduced in the Western dress style, which had been mostly symmetric. The asymmetric style that pursued atypical beauty, though not common during the late Victorian Age, shows a change in the typical Western dress style. With regard to dress making techniques, sewing machines were distributed widely during the early Victorian Age but they were not used in all parts of dress. Most of details and trimming works were done manually and some parts were attached and detached by hand sewing. In addition, not like today, there were no generalized rules of making such as the form of closings and composition.

  • This study intends to discover characteristics and methods of retro image wedding dresses by analyzing prior studies about retro characteristics. The characteristics of retro image wedding dresses are as follows: 'Recreative Retro', Trend revival Retro', 'Nostalgic Retro' and 'Remixed Retro'. The expressional characteristics and methods of each character are as follows. The 'Recreated Retro' has been recreated in the wedding dresses worn by celebrities, actresses' wedding dresses in movies, and also in the famous designer's high end wedding dresses. These dresses do not merely duplicate the originals, but also reflect images, which were reproduced by combining modern technology. The 'Trend revival Retro' emerged as a combination of past fashion styles and new trends. It seems to stimulate the customers' reminiscence of past fashion trends and create unique designs through expressing the metaphor or the adaptation of past fashion styles. The 'Nostalgic Retro' started from the discovery of emotional values for something old or the inclination to be attracted to old styles. It has been expressed through design concepts with natural themes. The 'Remixed Retro' is from recombination of Retro elements. It is shown as a new interpretative code which explains how current time blends with different times.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the appearance similarity between a 3D virtual wedding dress, and a model wearing real dress, and production efficiency, and the possibility of achieving similar results with 3D digital technology. Five wedding dresses for small weddings under the theme of 'Dream Series', were designed and produced in virtual and real dresses to quantitatively compare and analyze the appearance similarity and production efficiency. Experts compared the appearance similarity on the silhouettes, colors, materials, and details, and production efficiency was compared with time and cost. Based on our results, 3D virtual images of four out of the five dresses were similar to the real images. Our efficiency evaluation results showed that the manufacturing time was 45.4% shorter, and the manufacturing cost was 46.1% less than the existing method. This indicated that the wedding dress manufacturing process using 3D virtual software was time and cost saving competitive. Our results also confirmed that 3D virtual software technology has the potential to increase the efficiency of designing and production, and therefore an increase in competitiveness and sales of wedding dresses. Furthermore, 3D technology allows consumers to select and order wedding dresses online through 3D virtual software. This is a great advantage, and it highlights the significance of this research study.

  • The objective of this research is to unveil the dynamic changes of the trends in wedding dresses during the 20th Century. The studies were carried out in two forms; firstly by observing the actual wedding dresses worn by people at that time, and secondly by conducting formative comparisons between those dresses with the ones appeared in movies corresponding to that period. Movies provide an invaluable insight into the era's wedding dresses fashion trends since they function as intimate bridges in connection with the time's audience, and the visible imageries accurately reflect the characteristics embedded within that time frame. As there are no precedent studies regarding this topic, this thesis can serve as vital research data for the wedding dress industry. Research data regarding the actual wedding dresses were collected from books and museum web sites. The object of movies were films produced before World War II that contained both the background settings of the 20th Century and wedding dresses, of which photographic imageries were captured. Research analysis was then conducted by merging these data with findings from relevant books and internet materials. The results of the thesis are as the following: The 1900s was an extension of the 19th Century's popular fashion trend which can be characterized as the S curve silhouettes of the Edwardian period when long trains and long veils symbolized wealth and social power. In the 1910s, high waist silhouettes with soft wrinkles were prevalent as attire suitable for active mobility with practical functionality were highly regarded. During the 1920s, the flapper style became the dominant trend. Hem lines of the skirts were curled in the form of the scallop and laces were the most widely used raw materials. By the 1930s, wedding dresses that reinterpreted the glamorous sheath lines, practical two piece styles, and retro-styles became predominant. The 1940s saw the advent of ready-made wedding dresses made of synthesized materials; practical military style suits and casuals sometimes substituted the wedding dresses. And although the wedding dresses in the movies were primarily costumes to express the personalities of the characters, they were also reinterpreted as manifestations of the formative characteristics of each relative period that pursued very distinct and diverse features.

  • The aim of this study is to develop new wedding dress designs by blending the traditional female Korean upper garment of Han-bok, known as dang-ui, with Western-style wedding dress designs. For this research, the author considered the various types of wedding dresses and their historical development based on literary resources and previous studies of the subject. The results are as follows: first, this study featured the use of different types of fabric for the dang-ui, selected from the various fabrics available for wedding dresses. Starting from the basic design of a sleeveless and strapless princess-line tight top, three different styles of A-line dresses were created: a tiered long dress, an unbalanced tiered midi dress, and a spangled and pleated mini dress. The study also resulted in a tight H-line mini dress with a bustle. In this way, the author was able to suggest new wedding dress styles that are well suited to the cultural trend of the Korean wave. Second, the traditional Korean dang-ui is an elegant ceremonial garment that harmonizes well with Western-style wedding dresses. Satisfaction can be found from combining these creative fusion gowns with traditional Korean aesthetics. Third, the traditional Korean ceremonial coronet jokduri and veil, which go well with dang-ui wedding dresses, are suitable accessories for contemporary wedding dresses. The dang-ui wedding dress, a result of merging the Korean dang-ui and the Western style, will help enhance business for both the Korean and the international wedding industry thanks to an aesthetic that has global appeal.

  • As a mirror of its time, fashion exactly reflects the trend of today' s society. In addition, as a tool to satisfy our desire and express images, it brings diverse image changes in people's minds. This kind of pattern is frequently found in wedding images, especially in wedding dresses. When it comes to a wedding dress, in general, we often think of a modest and pure-white one. In modem times, however, people prefer a differentiated image which reflects their personality and ego. In other words, it is an important means of expressing their own personality by focusing on their active and personal aspects and getting away from the passive, stable and formative aspects in the past. These days, a combination of narcissism and eroticism is found on wedding dresses. This kind of trend has been expressed into romanticism. In terms of the latest sensitive wedding dress trend, unique and creative couture wedding dresses have appeared. Therefore, this study has classified this kind of trend into two categories; Formative and Design aspects. According to an analysis on the formative and design aspects of romanticism in wedding dresses, diverse characteristics were observed in shape, color, material and ornament in the Formative Aspect. In terms of design, the characteristics of sensuality, ornament, exoticism and compromise were observed.
