  • This study was inducted to investigate the effects of microbial fertilizers on the fields of young radish(Raphanus sativus L.), chemical components of plant and soil, and the microbial floras. Six microbial fertilizers, MPK+Husk+Palma, Husk+Palma, MPK+Compost, Compost, BIO Livestock Clean System(BLCS) cattle dropping, and Tomi were used. The yields of young radish were increased in six microbial fertilizer treatments. The fresh matter weight, the number of leaves, and the dry matter weight of young radish in BLCS cattle dropping treatment, the leaf length in MPK+Husk+Palma treatment, the sugar content in Husk+Palma treatment, arid the leaf width in Tomi treatment showed the highest amount, respectively. The effects of microbial fertilizers on chemical characteristics of young radish and soil were examined. Phosphoric acid amount of young radish in Tomi treatment was much higher than other treatments. Potassium amount of young radish showed high significance in all microbial fertilizer treatments compared with control, and shoved the highest in Compost treatment . Two components, phosphoric acid find potassium, in soil inoculated by microbial fertilizers showed significant. Phosphoric acid in the Tomi treatment and Potassium in Husk+Palma treatment were increased. The microorganic populations in soil inoculated with microbial fertilizers were examined. While the number of Bacillus in ceil was increased in MPK+Husk+Palma treatment, the numbers of total bacteria, actinomycetes, and fungi were increased in Tomi treatment.

  • This study investigated changes in the chemical properties and antioxidant activity of dried shredded radish (Raphanus sativus L.). Shredded radishes with a thickness of either 3.5 mm or 7.0 mm were dried using hot air at $45^{\circ}C$ or were sun dried. The degree of browning for the 3.5 mm sun dried radish, the 7.0 mm sun dried radish, the 3.5 mm hot air dried radish and the 7.0 mm hot air dried radish was 0.12, 0.14, 0.04 and 0.04, respectively. The DPPH radical scavenging activity (EDA%) of the hot air dried radish had a higher value than the sun dried radish. In contrast, the ABTS values of the sun dried radishes were higher than the hot air dried radishes. The total polyphenol content of the 7.0 mm and 3.5 mm hot air dried radishes reached high values of 15.99 and 11.62 mg/g, respectively. The total polyphenol contents of the 7.0 mm and 3.5 mm sun dried radishes were 9.63 and 6.77 mg/g, respectively. In sensory evaluation of the stir-fry dried shredded radishes, the 7.0 mm hot air dried sample scored the highest in terms of smell, color, gloss and overall preference. In conclusion, hot air drying ($45^{\circ}C$) and a thickness of 7.0 mm were found to be the optimal conditions for dried shredded radish and stir-fried dried shredded radish products.

  • Growth and mineral composition of young radish in soil amended with sewage sludge (ISS) with or without liming were investigated. Levels of EC, T-N, and micronutrients were increased in the ISS treatment (50 Mg/ha) compared to the NPK treatment but those of available P and exchangeable cations were decreased. Chlorosis was appear on the young radish leaf at the ISS treatment, but this phytotoxic symptom was corrected with lime amendment (3 Mg/ha). Yields of young radish leaf and root in the combined treatment of ISS and lime were increased about 29 and 48%, respectively, compared with those in the ISS treatment. Contents of P, K, Ca, and Mg in young radish were higher in the combined treatment to ISS and lime, whereas those contents in the ISS treatment were lower than those in the NPK treatment. Contents of Cu, Zn, and Ni in soil and young radish leaf were positively correlated with total N content in young radish leaf, while contents of P, K, Ca, and Mg were negatively correlated. Contents of Cu, Zn, and Ni in leaf were negatively correlated with yield of young radish. Contents of Cu and Zn in leaf corresponding with a 5% yield reduction of young radish were 22.4 and 349 mg/kg, respectively.

  • The content of reducing sugars and sucroses was increased by cold- and PA-treatment in cotyledons of spring radish. But in cotyledons of fall radish, the content of reducing sugars, and sucroses was increased by cold treatment but was not increased by cold- and PA-treatment. Total free amino acids in cotyledons of spring radish were increased by cold treatment, but were not increased in cotyledons of fall radish. The results show that cold sensitive spring radishes were adapted by regulating of cellular osmosis and show that the physiological and biochemical metabolism of spring radish was much different from the fall radish. We report first that polyamine has synergetic effect with cold stress on cotyledons of spring radish, but not on cotyledons of fall radish.

  • BACKGROUND: Clay mineral is well known to improve physico-chemical of soil. The objective of this study was to investigate the growth characteristics and inorganic nutrient contents of crops with application levels of phyllite.METHODS AND RESULTS: Both young radish and lettuce were selected as target crops for this study. The experiment was conducted in a wagner pot(1/5000a) in glass house at Sunchon National University. Treatment conditions were divided P0NPK(No phyllite + NPK), P5NPK(phyllite 5 Mg/ha + NPK), P10NPK(phyllite 10 Mg/ha + NPK) and P15NPK(phyllite 15 Mg/ha + NPK) by crops, respectively. Bulk density and porosity of soil in control without treatment conditions were ranged from 1.02 ∼1.04 g/cm3 and 56.5∼57.0%, respectively, and those for treatments with phyllite were in the ranged from 0.94∼1.00 g/cm3 and 58.4∼63.5%, respectively. Dry weights of young radish and lettuce were higher in P15NPK treatment than those in other treatments. The amounts of T-N, T-P and K uptake in young radish with phyllite application treatments were increased 36∼115, 18∼67 and 20∼76% than without phyllite application treatment, respectively. In lettuce treatments, amounts of T-N, T-P and K uptake were intended to all tested treatments similar with result of young radish treatment.CONCLUSION: Therefore, these results confirm that phyllite application to the soil improves physico-chemical of soil in addition to improving growth of young radish and lettuce.

  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of chromium application level, soil pH change, soil topping, application of some metals and application of organic matter on the absorption of chromium by radish and its growth. The results of experiments are summarized as following. Application of chromium as potassium dichromate up to 50 mg/kg did not affect the germination of radish seed. Application of chromium above this level affected the germination abversely. The dry matter yield of and absorption of chromium by radish was not affected by the application of chromium up to 100 mg/kg. Increased in soil pH decreased the uptake of chromium by radish under all range of chromium application rates. Under acidic condition (pH 5-6), the increase in the application of chromium resulted in the increase in the uptake of chromium by radish and lowering of dry matter production of radish. However, under alkaline condition (pH 7-8), increased application of chromium did not affect the uptake of chromium and the dry matter yield of radish. The application of Zn, Fe and Cu, up to 100 mg/kg did not affect not affect the uptake of chromium and dry matter yield of radish. The topping of soil with untreated soil after application of chromium up to five cm, did not affect the chromium uptake of radish, the same treatments tended to increase the dry matter yield of radish. The application of organic fertilizer(obtained from local market) up to the amount equivalent to 3000 kg/ha, although increased the dry matter yield of radish, did not affect the uptake of chromium by radish significantly. All the treatments tested in this study did not affect the translocation of chromium between root and shoot of radish.

  • Organic compost from the food waste and poultry manure is useful for a soil conditioner and fertilizer. The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of the food waste compost(FC) and poultry manure compost(PC) separately on the growth of young radish and the change of soil properties. Applying 3, 6, $9kg/m^2$ of FC and 1, 2, $3kg/m^2$ of PC, the cultivation of young radish was carried out in the crop field. In young radish applied with FC, leaf length was positively increased with the increasing usage of the compost. Number and area of leaves, and weight of leaf and root were peaked at applying rate of $6kg/m^2$. Growth of young radish with FC of $9kg/m^2$ was lowest in the initial period of the cultivation, and it is regarded that the applying rate of $9kg/m^2$ was detrimental to the germination of the young radish. In young radish applied with PC, the growth rate lowest at applying of $2kg/m^2$ than any other applying rate. Soil properties as bulk density and EC were considerably improved according to applying of food-waste and poultry manures compost. It should be considered to be needed additional study about the accurate applying rate and detailed investigation for soil properties.

  • To investigate the effects of waste sludge from antibiotic fermentation on the growth of young radish and chemical properties of soil, five levels of fertilizer, control (recommended fertilizer, $N-P_2O_5-K_2O=160-59-104$ kg/ha), AS(control + sludge 1,000 kg/ha), AC(control + conventional compost 1,000 kg/ha), SNS(control - subtracting 30% N of sludge + sludge 1,000 kg/ha) and SNC(control - subtracting 30% N of conventional compost + conventional compost 1,000 kg/ha) were applied and radish was grown twice with same treatments on May and August in 1998. Germination rate and early growth of young radish grown with AS and SNS were lower than those grown in control and with AC, SNC. This negative effects by adding the sludge in the early growth seemed to be caused by damage of ammonia gas released during degradation of the sludge in soil. However, yield of young radish showed no significant difference among all the treatments including the AS and SNS at the 1st and 2nd experiment, and these suggested that the latter half of growth of young radish was accelerated by adding the sludge. Contents of T-N in young radish and inorganic N in soil showed a tendency to increase by adding the sludge while antibiotic substance, cephalosporin-C, was not detected in plant material and soils after harvest of young radish in both experiments. Consequently, waste sludge from antibiotic fermentation, which contains high levels of organic matter and nitrogen could be used as an useful resource in agriculture.

  • The oral administration of extracts of young radishes cultivated with sulfur after intravenous tumor cell injection achieved a marked reduction of pulmonary colonization in mice. Treatment of the mice with extracts of young radish cultivated with sulfur did not show any increase in the number of CD8+ or NK T cells in the spleen, indicating no influence on host immunity. Sulforaphane, which could be a candidate for an active compound from young radishes cultivated with sulfur, inhibited cell growth of B16-F10 melanoma cells. In addition, extracts of the young radish cultivated with sulfur-fed group showed enhanced quinine reductase (QR) activities in the liver and lung and a slight increase of glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity in the liver. These results suggested that the administration of extracts of young radishes cultivated with sulfur suppressed pulmonary tumorigenesis, possibly due to increased activity of detoxification enzymes in the liver and lung, and partly due to cell cytotoxicity.
