  • Three lakes (lake Homanpo, Hyunkum and Daein) were revealed to be brackish by the results of zooplankton fauna and salinities (2.8 ppt and 0.8 at lake Hyunkum in May and October 2002, and 1.5 and 0.5 at the Daein) in Shinpo district, North Korea. Among 34 taxa of zooplankton occurred, copepods and rotifers showed the prosperity in species number with 15 species and 7 species, respectively. Twenty four taxa of freshwater animals, six brackish ones and four marine ones were found, Brackish copepods, Pseudodiaptomus inopinus and Sinocalanus tenellus, were found in all lakes. More than 90% of zooplankton abundances consisted of brackish and marine species in three lakes. The outburst of S. tenellus was observed (59,000 indiv./$m^3$) at lake Hyunkum in May, when the proportion of brackish and marine zooplankton exceeded 99% of total zooplankton abundance. Long-term monitoring appears to be needed to provide basic data to protect brackish lakes in the study area.

  • The construction of river mouth dam has prevented seawater from backwarding to upstream in Kum river estuary since 1990. Field observation on environmental factors, and zooplankton and phytoplankton dynamics have been carried out three times with two month interval in the summer and autumn in 2000 at three selected stations in Kum river estuary. Blockade of seawater flowing backward to upstream caused sharp contrast of zooplankton fauna and phytoplankton flora between upstream and downstream of the river mouth dam. Freshwater cladocerans i.e., Bosmina longisrostris and Daphnia galeata dominated in the upstream, and marine copepods of Acartia omorii and Paracalanus crassirostris occurred abundantly in downstream of the dam. Freshwater diatoms did not distributed in the downstream of the dam except Melosira varians, while marine diatom of Cylidrotheca closterium occurred in benthic waters bath in upstream and downstream of the dam. The construction of the river mouth dam seems to play an ecological role to blockade the input of marine organism into the upstream in Kum river estuary.

  • Fifty-four zooplankton species from Daecheong Lake were identified during the research period from June to October 2001. The representative zooplanktons mostly comprised the index species indicating the intermediate stage from oligosaprobity to ${\beta}$-mesosaprobity. During the blooming season of blue-green algae, the population of large cladocerans like Daphnia galeata precipitously decreased in size, while rotifers and small cladocerans like Bosmina longirostris increased in population size. Therefore, soon after the peak of the blooming of blue-green algae, whole zooplankton standing crop and number of species showed the tendency of recovery, or even the sharp increase. The population size of Daphnia galeata was affected very sensitively by the change of cyanobacterial density.

  • A Study on zooplankton fauna and phytoplankton flora was carried out three times in June, August and September 2012 at the Hyuncheon wetland in Gangwon-do, Korea. A total of 14 taxa of zooplankton were distributed, which consisted of six rotifers, four cladocerans, two copepods, one nematode and one aquatic insect larvae. Occurrence of Simulium japonicum supports that studied water is the first grade clear water. It was observed that the abundance of zooplankton was never exceeded over $55ind.L^{-1}$. Rotifers dominated in the months of June and August, whereas cladocerans in September, respectively. The phytoplankton flora was consisted of 26 species. The standing crops varied between $4,080{\sim}10,120cell.L^{-1}$. Docidium undulatum is the typical species distributed in muddy wetland and Closterium acerosum is distributed widely from wetlands through lakes. Navicula spp. and Nitzchia spp. were recorded to be distributed in lentic waters of big lakes such as Paldang Lake. Species diversity indices decreased gradually from June to September between 1.3~1.9 in zooplankton but lowest in August between 0.9~1.6 in phytoplankton, respectively. Based on my study observation, I anticipate that the poor distribution of zooplankton, phytoplankton, and low values of species diversity index are likely to be a cause of narrow area with shallowness of waters during the short period.

  • Despite the impacts of the climate changes on the pelagic ecosystem, few studies have examined the pelagic-benthic coupling in the adjacent East China Sea and Korea Strait. Therefore, the species composition and abundance of the macrobenthic community, as well as the potential food sources of benthic fauna were investigated in the present study using stable isotope analysis (${\delta}^{13}C\;and\;{\delta}^{15}N$) for suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM), sedimentary organic matter (SOM), phytoplankton, and zooplankton. A total of 157 macrobenthic fauna were collected, and the density of the macrobenthic fauna ranged from 4 to 434 ind./0.25 $m^2$, with an average density of 149 ind./0.25 $m^2$. The density of the benthic fauna increased moving from offshore shelf sites to coastal sites adjacent to the Korea Strait. Cluster analysis showed that the macrobenthic communities consisted of three distinct groups: group A in the Korea Strait, group B in the East China Sea, and group C near Ieodo. The dominant species in group A were the amphipods Photis japonica and Ampelisca miharaensis, followed by the polychaete Scolotoma longifolia. Environmental variables, such as the temperature of the seawater and sediment, and oxygen, and chlorophyll a levels, appeared to affect the structure of the community, suggesting the importance of coupling with the pelagic system. The ${\delta}^{13}C$ values of SPOM and zooplankton ranged from -22.97 to -23.5% and -19.92 to -21.86%, respectively, showing a relatively narrow range(<1%) between the two components. The difference between the ${\delta}^{13}C$ values of SOM and pelagic organic matter was also within 1%, suggesting that the SOM originated from the pelagic system, which is an important factor controlling the macrobenthic community.
