  • Cold-formed channel sections are used in a variety of applications in which they are required to absorb deformation energy. This paper investigates the collapse behaviour and energy absorption capability of cold-formed steel channels with flange edge stiffeners under large deformation major-axis bending. The Yield Line Mechanism technique is applied using the energy method, and based upon measured spatial plastic collapse mechanisms from experiments. Analytical solutions for the collapse curve and in-plane rotation capacity are developed, and used to model the large deformation behaviour and energy absorption. The analytical results are shown to compare well with experimental values. Due to the complexities of the yield line model of the collapse mechanism, a simplified procedure to calculate the energy absorbed by channel sections under large bending deformation is developed and also shown to compare well with the experiments.

  • Torrefaction is the promising process of pretreating biomass materials to increase the quality of their energy, especially to upgrade the materials' grindability so that it is suitable for a commercial pulverizer machine. In this study, torrefaction of oak, bamboo, oil palm trunk, and rice husk was carried out under different torrefaction temperatures ($300^{\circ}C$, $330^{\circ}C$, and $350^{\circ}C$) and different torrefaction residence times (30, 45, and 60 minutes). Complete characterization of the torrefied biomass, including proximate analysis, calorific value, thermogravimetric analysis, mass yield, energy yield, and grindability properties (Hardgrove Grindability Index) was carried out. Increasing the torrefaction temperature and residence time significantly improved the calorific value, energy density (by reducing the product mass), and grindability of the product. Furthermore, for commercial purposes, the torrefaction conditions that produced the desired grindability properties of the torrefied product were $330^{\circ}C-30minutes$ and $300^{\circ}-45minutes$, and the latter condition produced a higher energy yield for bamboo, oil palm trunk, and rice husk; however, torrefaction of oak did not achieve the targeted grindability property values.

  • We have studied the Infrared Multiphoton Dissociation (IRMPD) of 1-bromo-3-chloropropane by using the pulsed $CO_2$ laser. The product yields and the HCl/HBr branching ratios in IRMPD of $BrCH_2CH_2CH_2Cl$ are studied under the focused beam geometry as a function of buffer gas (He) pressure, laser energy, and photolysing wavelength. It is observed that the total dissociation yield has a laser energy dependence of 1.8-2.0 power order and the branching ratio is very slightly dependent on the pulse energy for the laser lines employed. The dependences of total dissociation yield and branching ratio on the buffer gas pressures show that the dissociation yield monotonically decreases and the branching ratio slightly decreases with the increase of the buffer gas pressure. The Energy-Grained Master Equation (EGME) was applied to explain the laser pulse energy and the buffer gas pressure(He) dependence of the dissociation yield and the branching ratio.

  • Because of the limited fossil resources and the need to avoid emissions and toxic waste the future energy supply will be based on a large portion of renewable energies: wind-, solar-, biomass- and geothermal energy. Focus is on the utilization of wind energy coming from onshore- and offshore-sites. Generating electricity from wind is state of the art and feeding large amounts of wind power into the electrical grid will create some additional problems. Suggestions concerning energy storage will be made and the problem of power quality is discussed.

  • This study presents an approach of tidal farming optimization using a numerical modelling method to simulate tidal energy extraction for 1MW scale tidal stream devices around Jangjuk-sudo, South Korea. The utility of the approach in this research is demonstrated by optimizing the tidal farm in an idealized scenario and a more realistic case with three scenarios of 28-turbine centered tidal array (named A, B and C layouts) inside the Jangjuk-sudo. In addition, the numerical method also provides a pre-processing calculation helps the researchers to quickly determine where the best resource site is located when considering the position of the tidal stream turbine farm. From the simulation results, it is clearly seen that the net energy (or wake energy yield which includes the impacts of wake effects on power generation) extracted from the layout A is virtually equal to the estimates of speed-up energy yield (or the gross energy which is the sum of energy yield of each turbine without wake effects), up to 30.3 GWh/year.

  • This paper presents a simple but valid loss calculation method of grid-connected photovoltaic system based on normalized yield model. The proposed method can be represented as a quantitative value for five losses and performance of grid-connected photovoltaic system with three years monitored data. These results will indicate that it is useful to investigate various loss factors causing the performance obstruction, enhance the lifetime yield for changing meteorological conditions, and determine the optimal design and performance improvement of grid-connected photovoltaic system.

  • X-rays contribute to electron emission from material surfaces primarily through photoelectric interaction. A simple model is described for predicting the yield and energy spectrum of photon and Auger electrons emitted from materials exposed to X-ray with low energy. In this paper, We have calculated the yield of primary, Auger, and secondary, electrons. The results of the photoelectric yield model developed here suggests that. I) The angular distribution of emitted electrons(Per unit angle) is proportional to $sin{\theta}\;cos{\theta}$ for all electron energies and all components(Primary, Auger, or Secondary) II) The shape of the energy spectrum of the photoelectric yield is independent of angle. III) For this targets the forward and backward photoelectric yields are indentical.

  • This paper presents performance estimation approach of grid-connected photovoltaic(PV) system to predict energy yield from irradiance to PV system using normalized yield model for changing meteorological conditions. The accuracy and validity of proposed performance estimation method is identified by compared measured with estimated yield using monitored data. These results will indicate that it is useful to estimate various loss factors causing the system performance obstruction and enhance the lifetime yield of PV system.
