After performing the auricular acupuncture therapy for the functional headache, we came to gain the following therapy effects. 1. In the whole of the patients of the functional headache, housewives of forties were most of all. 2. In the classification of mordern medicine on the patients of the functional headache, muscular contractional headache was most of all and in the classification of oriental differentiation of symtoms and signs(辨證), headache due to deficiency of blood(血虛頭痛) was most of all. 3. In the regional auricular acupuncture therapy for the functonal headache, Taiyang of auricular point(太陽點) had an effect on the lateral headache around the area of Taiyang of auricular point(太陽點) though the actions of sedation, analgesia, Neck of auricular point(頸點) had an effect on the muscular contractional headache of the occipital region, and Stomach of auricular point(胃點) had an effect on the headache of stagnation of phlegm(痰濁頭痛) of anterior region with a chronic digestive disease. 4. The average treatment times of the auricular acupuncture therapy in the patients of the functional headache was 4.08 times, if we have them take auricular acupuncture therapy about 4 times it could be thought to take excellent effect of treatment. 5. The effect of auricular acupuncture therapy for functional headache was turned out to be effective in the following orders ; lateral region(Group A), occipital region(Group B), anterior region(group C). Through the clinical consequences of therapy mentioned above, we came to confirm regular therapeuric effects and hereafter, it is considered that a clinical comparative study on oriental cure and auricular acupuncture therapy for headache has to be more progressed than now.
Objectives : The purpose of 29 case series is to report the possibility that a hand acupuncture is effective in relieving headache. Methods : After approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB), I analyzed 29 cases medical records of outpatients with headache, who visited ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ oriental medical hospital from December 2008 to December 2010, who have taken a hand acupuncture's treatment without other intervention, and who were diagnosed with one disease of international classification of headache disease second version (ICHD-2). The data was analyzed with Wilcoxon signed rank test to determine whether a hand acupuncture's treatment differed between before and after treatment's Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) according to types of headache and syndrome differentiation. Statistics program was used SPSS 18.0. Differences were considered significant at P<0.05. Results : The VAS of patients with headache was reduced after treatment of hand acupuncture from $6.57{\pm}2.04$ to $2.90{\pm}2.04$ for overall headache, from $6.32{\pm}2.05$ to $2.47{\pm}2.03$ for tension-type headache(P<0.001), from $7.10{\pm}2.18$ to $3.70{\pm}1.77$ for migraine(P<0.001), and from $6.00{\pm}1.41$ to $2.50{\pm}3.54$ for headache unspecified. A hand acupuncture produced a decrease in VAS of both ascendant hyperactivity of liver yang(P<0.001) and phlegm turbidity according to syndrome differentiation(P=0.002). No adverse event were encountered in any of the patients. Conclusions : It is suggested that a hand acupuncture may be effective in relieving headache, and could be applicable to first choice of acupuncture treatment for headache.
Purpose: This study was done to assess the effect of changes in forward head posture (FHP), neck mobility and headache clinical parameters on episodic tension-type headache (ETTH) and chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) who did craniocervial exercises. Methods: Twelve CTTH subjects and twelve ETTH subjects were studied. Side-view pictures of subjects were taken in both sitting and standing positions, in order to assess FHP by measuring the craniovertebral angle. Cervical range of motion (CROM) was employed to measure cervical mobility. A headache diary was kept to assess headache intensity, frequency, and duration. All subjects did three types of craniocervical exercise over 8 weeks. Measurements were done at pre-treatment, and at 4 and 8 weeks post-treatment. Results: Forward head posture and headache-related clinical parameters showed a significant improvement after craniocervical exercise (p<0.05). Flexion/extension and left/right rotation of CROM was significantly increased after the intervention (p<0.05), whereas changes in left/right bending did not reach statistical significance. Conclusion: This study indicates that craniocervical exercise may be effective in the management of tension-type headache.
Headache is a common complaint in pediatric office practices as well as in children presenting to emergency departments. Children who complain of headache usually are brought to medical attention by their parents, who seek reassurance that the headaches are not a sign of a serious illness. The etiologies of headache range from school problems to brain tumors. A history taking, physical examination, and appropriate diagnostic testing will enable to distinguish primary headaches from those of a secondary etiology. The clinical, neuroimaging, and laboratory evaluation of the child with headache are reviewed here.
Object : The purpose of this study is difference between western medicine and oriental medicine in tension headache. Methods : A literature study on the tension headache was performed. The cause, symptoms, relationship with other diseases, pathology and treatment of oriental and western medicine were investigated. Conclusion : In western medicine, tension headache is mainly caused by emotional stress, tension of head and neck musculatures. Treatments include medication, psychologic care, alteration of habits and biofeedback. Removal of muscle tension is of main interest in western medicine. In oriental medicine, tension headache is classified into internal and external problem. The imbalance of organs of spleen, liver and kidney causes headache. Hyperactivity of liver chi and deficiency of kidney yin are main source of headache. On the treatment, relieve of muscle tension and correction of bad habit are emphasized in western medicine while promotion of harmony among the internal organs is main target in oriental medicine.

The purpose of this case study is to report the effect of oriental medical treatment on chronic tension-type headache. Despite the patient was treated by cervical nerve block for headache, headache was not improved. We diagnosed chronic tension-type headache according to ICHD-II(The International Classification of Headache Disorders) and Qi deficiency, dampness and phlegm by oriental differential diagnosis of symptom and signs. We applied herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion and cupping therapy for hospitalization(7 days). Oriental medical treatment may have effective results in treating chronic tension-type headache that was not improved by cervical nerve block treatment. But this is a single case study, so further case-series research should be compiled.

Paranasal sinusitis has many different kinds of symptoms ; rhinorrea, cough. post nasal drip. headache, etc. In some cases, patients, mostly adults, had no symptom except headache. We treated a 8-year-old child who only complained headache without any other symptoms related in nasal disease. Her symptoms ; headache, nausea, vomiting and general weakness, showed typical type of disease which were due to phlegm. So we diagnosed her headache as a " Headache due to phlegm". Interestingly, her PNS images were diagnosed as bilateral maxillary sinusitis. After one and a half month treatment with herb-med and Aroma oil, the patient got free from all symptoms and her PNS images showed no abnormality.
Objectives : The Purpose of this study is to investigate clinical characteristics with 120 patients who have sufferred from headache and were treated. Methods : We classified 120 patients into several groups by International Headache Society(IHS) classification and evaluated the effects of oriental medical therapy on headache. Results : 1. According to the statistics, women patients were more than men. And 50s has highest number of headache patients. 2. In classification by IHS, tension type headache were highest. 3. 24.2% of patients had entered Department of Internal Medicine, Colleage of Oriental Medicine Dongeui Univ for treatment within six month of onset. 4. According to the statistics, headache of whole part has highest number of headache patients. 5. The most number of associated symptoms were nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia etc. 6. The most number of headache patient's past history were hypertension. 7. In classification by oriental medical differentiation of symptom and signs, the rate of blood deficiency were highest. 8. 64.2% of patients said they were satisfied with treatment, reporting half the frequency of headache or better from before treatment. Conclusions : In conclusion, the present results suggest that oriental medical therapy has effects on headache.
Objective: Tension-type headache is caused by hormones, foods, irritants, stress, obesity, fatigue, and neck and head trigger points-prolonged abnormal posture. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of relaxation approach on head posture, static postural stability, and headache in persons with tension-type headache. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: Thirty-five persons with tension-type headache participated in this study. This study was a pretest-posttest with a control group design for a duration of 4 weeks (60 min/3 times/1 wk). The participants were randomly allocated to the relaxation approach group (n=18) and the control group with conventional rehabilitation including thermotherapy and transcutaneous electrical stimulation for the same period (n=17). Outcome measures involved forward head posture (FHP), foot pressure, neck disability index (NDI), and six-item headache impact test (HIT-6). Results: Relaxation approach and control groups improved significantly in the amount of forward head posture, neck disability index, and six-item headache impact test scores after training (p<0.05). The control group was found to be significantly different in the amount of FHP, backward foot pressure, NDI, and HIT-6 after training compared to before training (p<0.05). The relaxation approach group significantly improved in forward head posture, neck disability index, and six-item headache impact test compared with control group after training (p<0.05). Neck disability index and six-item headache impact test significantly improved after training compared with before training in the control group (p<0.05). However, the foot pressure was not significantly different between relaxation approach and control groups. Conclusions: This study suggests that treatment with relaxation approach combined with self-exercise would be effective in reducing the amount of forward head posture, neck disability and headache impacts.

Objectives : This study sought to define autonomic functional difference on heart rate variability between headache patients and normal subjects Methods : We determined, heart rate variability of 52 headache patients and 30 normal subjects by means of three time domain measures: Mean PR(mean pulse rate), SDNN(standard deviation of all normal R-R intervals), RMSSD(the square root of the mean of sum of the squares of differences between adjacent normal R-R intervals), and five frequency domain measures: TP(total power), VLF(very low frequency), LF(low frequency), HF(high frequency). Results : 1) RMSSD, TP, HF, HF Norm of HRV decreased with aging and LF Norm, LF/HF increased with aging in headache patients. 2) There was no significant differences between migraine and tention headache in any standard index of HRV, whereas, HRV of total headache patients were smaller than those of normal subjects. 3) In the gender comparison, SDNN, RMSSD, HF of tention headache patients were the smallest and then migraine patients, normal subjects in order with man, whereas, LF Norm, LF/HF of normal subjects were the smallest with man. RMSSD of migraine patients were the smallest and then tention headache patients, normal subjects in order with women. 4) In the term of history of headache patients, SDNN, RMSSD were getting lower as long term. 5) There was no significant differences of HRV in physical symptom of headache patients. Conclusions : All of these results show that standard index of HRV of headache patients were significantly different with normal subjects.
